The Painted

Ever since I remember I have always been intrigued by antiquated places. The kind of places that are abandoned with no trace of the human touch yet are crowded by the shadows of the past. The ancientness, the haunting yet captivating stillness that is shrouded in mystery has always called to me. The distant voice that sounds deceptively familiar echoes in the hallways travelling room to room with every intention of being heard and so I followed the echo taking me home. To a place that I have spent decades living in and yet don’t know how to find. It belongs to the deepest and darkest corner of my mind. To a place that is secluded from everyone like a hidden treasure in the heart of a majestic mountain or a lost shrine of an ancient and forgotten God, a place that I cannot enter yet know of its existence or at least I thought I could not until that morning…

A Near Death Experience

I have been driving for what seems like eternity now and the road appears to be endless,

with trees that stretch for miles it looks like I am engulfed in greenery,

yet I don't seem to get any closer to my destination and the sky keeps getting darker.

Sighing I check my phone and realize that the battery is almost dead,

'I knew I should've charged it last night!' I groan.

Hopefully it won't die on me now or else without the GPS I think I'll be spending the night in the woods.

"Please God, make everything go smoothly!"

I pleaded silently as I bit my nails in anxiousness. I was really tired right now and hungry,

and the day seemed to not be ending anytime soon.

Finally, as if the Gods had listened to my prayers,

I was now nearing what seemed to be a civilization from a distance and even though the town seemed to be asleep it still felt less lonely now.

'Is this a ghost town!'

I murmured slowly as I maneuvered through the dark streets filled with eerie silence taking note of the fact that there wasn't a single living creature in sight.

'Everything looks dead'

I looked down at the GPS and realized that it was indeed quite late at night so everyone must be sleeping,

and I still had about an hour of driving left, Fantastic!

I yawned as I laid back into my seat and sped out of the town and into the night again.

Bringing the cup to my lips I sipped the last drop of coffee and threw the cup in the rubbish bag on the passenger's seat as I yawned again and fought to stay awake by blinking my eyes.

Everything looked hazy now and my eyes got heavier with every blink.

The buzzing from my phone suddenly jerked me awake and as I looked up,

I almost crashed into what seemed to be a huge animal in the middle of the road.

"Shit!"

I swerved off the road and into the trees but managed to pull the car into a stop as I was about to crash into a tree.

Closing my eyes,

I laid my head on the stirring wheel as I took a deep shaky breath and bit my tongue to hold back my tears.

This was definitely not the time for that.

Another notification brought my attention to my phone, 2% battery remaining.

"Oh God, tonight keeps getting worse" I groaned.

I really hope all this is worth it,

I'm at my limit now and today is just made to test my patience.

I sighed as I got back onto the road and rubbed my eyes again to hopefully get rid of the sleep.

'What the hell was that?

it looked like a deer!

I would've definitely died if I hit that'

I thought as I checked in the rear-view mirror hoping to get a glimpse of the creature but all I saw was darkness.

As I was thinking over what just happened and how I was so close to dying the car suddenly jerked forward once,

twice and a third time before it came to a stop, and I was left in complete silence.

"Are you fucking kidding me right now?!"

I screamed into the night as I pulled my hair.

"This is it; I have reached my breaking point there is no going back now!"

I banged my head on the stirring wheel as I cried hysterically.

"Why does it always have to be me"

I rubbed my nose as I looked up to the skies complaining to the whatever God that was listening to me at the moment.

"Can you at least make one good thing happen today?

please I'm begging you!"

I put my hands together begging as I closed my eyes.

The sound of another notification brought my attention to my phone,

wiping my tears I grabbed my phone and looked at the screen.

All it said was:

'you have reached your destination'.

Then the screen turned black and my phone died…..
