The Novel's Shadow

After dying, I opened my eyes to a new world, the world of a novel. With a new identity of a side character called Keith Devans, I will work in the shadows and help the protagonist whenever it is needed. Even with such a dream, the world of the novel is still dangerous for a side character like me so using the knowledge of the novel and obtaining some skills and talents I will become one of the strongest. Or so I hoped.

Trash Storyline (2)

[So how do you become a shadow, huh?]

*Sigh

The system and I, have been contemplating for hours about how to please the viewers by making me the shadow hero they wished for.

We have thought of the bookworm act but that wouldn't really work because Alicia and Monica are close to the main characters and also the library has many moments in the second year with the main characters studying inside of there.

We kept thinking until a sudden thought came into my head.

"Btw, does being a shadow in this world, also mean being close to the main character?"

[Huh?]

"It's just that normally in these novels, where one is like a shadow helper, they are always close to the main character but does that really have to be the case with me?"

[Now that you mention it, why do you need to be close to him?]

"Yeah, and the bastard also has that true color skill, meaning that being close to him and hiding one's identity is just hard for no reason"

[...You are right]

"And I don't even have to attend the academy now, either way, right? Because I'm already overpowered"

[Yeah...]

"Then go ask your viewer about it first though, I don't want to get cursed for not being deeply involved in the storyline"

[...Okay]

And so I waited for confirmation from the system.

Normally being a shadow would be easy, as one only had to go and deal with the enemies of the main character while hiding in the shadows.

But considering that we had to appease the viewers and also not deal with all the enemies for the growth of the main character, it actually becomes extremely hard.

And we also have to take into account the fact that the main character had that intent skill and could become troublesome if we impact the story too much.

Being a shadow could also be creating a secret organization that deals with crime, but considering that the guilds and the Round Table are already doing this kind of secretive work, it doesn't really work for us right now.

It was only after a few minutes that the system finally came back.

[I'm back]

"Oh!, finally, so what did they say?"

[*Sigh]

[They said that it is fine to not be as involved in the main character's story but they hope for you to remain close to them, meaning that you would have to be in the academy]

"Huh?"

[I know]

"What do you mean you know, that doesn't make sense whatsoever, and at this point, I don't even know what a shadow is supposed to be anymore"

[I feel the same way]

"Do you though?"

[Yes, I understand]

"No no no no no, you don't understand, do you?"

[What?]

"...My potential is unknown but it probably refers to (SS) ranked, doesn't it? And not only that but being a student already reveals my identity to the world together with my rank"

[...]

"..."

[I don't think they thought this through]

"Then go ask them again, bastard"

"The one and most important test that marks the future of the protagonist is the god damn evaluation, didn't it occur to you, that I wouldn't be able to attend the academy like that"

[I can't ask them about it]

"Huh? Why?"

[Because they said, we were the story writers and not them]

'I want to kill this system'

[I can hear your thoughts btw]

"Tch"

[Well, we will have to think this through]

*Sigh

"Okay, but first of all can we think of what a shadow is supposed to be?"

[That would be ideal wouldn't it]

"Yeah"

And so with that, we spent the next few hours, thinking about everything a shadow could be and what a shadow should do.

"So a shadow is someone that hides his true identity and is on the good side"

[Yeah, that's the most basic shadow one can be]

"Finally, now moving on, what do we do about the academy?"

[Well, you can't really join as a student can you, so how about being a teacher?]

"No chance, that would take years of training just to join as a teacher so there is no way"

[Then?]

"Well, maybe a janitor?"

[...]

"It isn't that bad, right?"

[...That sounds pathetic]

"The identity doesn't have to be special as long as my real identity is not exposed"

[But the viewers are not gonna like it, you should be like an executive or the headmaster instead]

"Ah...That's it"

[What? What is it?]

"The headmaster position"

[Huh?]

[Are you crazy?]

"Ok, Hear me out, It may sound dumb at first, but the headmaster didn't really have much of an impact during most arcs of the school year, and replacing him and doing what he did to cause some events might actually work"

[Yeah but becoming the headmaster is a whole other issue from just hiding your identity and the events]

"Not if you consider, that I know how to make connections with Ray, and Ray has probably a large number of connections with the round table and media, don't you think?"

[That...]

[The issue still stands with the current headmaster, though]

"Right...But that issue can be easily dealt with, don't you think?"

[How?]

"During one of the future arcs, when the headmaster died, the Round Table was tasked with choosing a new headmaster, because of some stupid law from years ago, right?"

[Yeah, it was created by the creator of the academy]

[And that event will only happen in a few years from now]

"Yeah that's true but thankfully we have the hidden villain whose identity will rise in popularity after the killing of the head of a household"

[Huh? There is no such villain in the stor...]

[...You really]

"Now let's leave that to the side and think of an excuse to escape mom and leave the academy"

[...]

[Sigh]

And so, the system and I discussed the many things that could be used as an excuse to allow us to drop out of the academy and convince mom from letting me drop out in the first place.

"Kei, come downstairs breakfast is ready!"

After hearing mom's voice, I checked my watch and noticed that it was already the next morning.

'Wait my watch?'

'Huh?'

"Why do I have my watch with me?"

[Do you really have an (SS+) ranked intelligence?]

"...You know, for being a being far from a human, you sure act like a kid"

[Shut up]

[Anyways, the watch was also considered to be an item requested for your return, and inside there, there should be the other items except for the gloves which are already in your hands]

"Damn, how rich was that viewer"

[Extremely]

"What's his name?"

[Shadow Monarch]

"OH, like th-"

[Shut up]

Before I could finish saying anything, I was interrupted by the system, but it looked like he didn't wish to speak about it any further than that, so I decided to check the watch once again and noticed that my RP was still on my watch.

[Balance: 61,231,875,258]

[Human currency is not monitored due to the corruption in the human realm, that is why you were allowed to keep your currency]

"That's...pretty cool, I guess"

But leaving that matter aside, I stood up and headed downstairs to eat breakfast, and just like yesterday, I helped Emma up from her seat and talked to mom about the academy, but I knew that this was the right time.

"Mom", I said while staring at her seriously.

"What is it, Kei?"

"This may sound crazy, but I don't want to attend the academy"

"Oh, that's fine"

"I know this may sound bad and wait what?"

"I said it was fine"

"Huh? Why?"

"Well, I wasn't really expecting you to go, I actually thought you would just give up on school right away"

Did Keith, really look that bad in mom's eyes.

I then kept eating my meal in silence and mom who noticed my downed expression tried to comfort me after hurting my nonexistent pride.

[HAHAHAHAHAHA]

'Shut up, you dumb system'

I finally returned to my room and as usual, I sat down on my bed.

"You were getting a good laugh in, weren't you?"

[...]

"Why are you so silent?"

"Don't worry, I won't kill the demon king but I know that there should be some items like the [Mhingseng] and [Elixir of Growth], that I could get"

[Don't]

"Don't what?"

[YOU BASTARD! YOU CAN'T EVEN GROW ANYMORE, YOU LITERALLY ARE ALREADY MAXED OUT]

"Oh...You have a good point"

[Right?]

"Yeah, and that's a bigger reason to get the item"

[Huh?]

"Why would I let that guy Aso have it, instead of another (S) ranked like Ciel or Noel, when they would be more useful to the growth of the human realm?"

[Ah...]

[You know, now that I think about it, you and I are both trash at creating a good storyline right]

"Don't look at me, I have never written anything or thought of anything before, I was just a reader, and even then I barely even understood most of the plot lines"

[This is so fucked]

"Well, honestly, the story that was created from this world was also a trash generic novel, the protagonist becomes hella strong through pain and suffering, while creating a harem and defeating the demon king"

[That is...]

"Yeah"
