Chapter 43: A Team in the Making

After their arduous journey through the mysterious forest, the group, exhausted but relieved, finally approached a small town nestled in the mountain valley. The setting sun cast golden hues over the rooftops, and the scent of fresh market produce mingled with the fragrance of mountain flowers, filling the air with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Alaric, Kimpa Vita, Kael, and Luther could only think of one thing: rest and a brief return to normalcy after their recent harrowing experiences.

"I think I'm going to collapse if I don't sit down soon," Kael grumbled, adjusting his bag on his shoulder.

Alaric, walking beside him, lightly slapped him on the back. "Come on, hold on. We're almost there. A good drink, and you'll be as good as new."

Kael pretended to faint, nearly falling into Alaric's arms. Alaric caught him just in time, laughing. "You're really not built for long treks, are you?"

Kimpa Vita and Luther, walking a little behind, exchanged amused glances. Luther, with a grin, took Vita's hand. "Look at them… They act like kids."

Vita nodded, but her gaze, despite the smile, remained vigilant. Since the incident with the mystical creature, she had sensed a growing tension in Alaric, one he tried to hide behind these moments of camaraderie. Yet, here and there, she noticed glimpses of the darkness Kael had mentioned—an underlying shift in his friend. But for now, she chose not to dwell on it. They finally had a moment of respite, and she intended to enjoy it.

Arriving at the town, the group headed straight for the main inn, a warm wooden building with flowers hanging in pots at every window. Inside, the crackling fire welcomed them, and the innkeeper, a round, jovial woman, quickly seated them around a large table.

"So, what can I get you all?" she asked with a beaming smile.

"Anything warm and filling," Alaric replied enthusiastically, his eyes lighting up at the thought of a proper meal. "And a pint of your best beer for each of us."

Kael, who wasn't much of a drinker, raised an eyebrow. "I think I'll have some tea instead."

Alaric rolled his eyes. "Seriously? We're in an inn, not a library."

Kimpa Vita and Luther exchanged another amused glance. "I'll have tea as well," Luther added with a soft laugh. "We're not all tireless warriors."

"Tireless is a bit of a stretch," Vita sighed, rubbing her temples. "After everything we've been through, I think I'll sleep for an entire day."

The meal exceeded their expectations, and after satisfying their hunger, the group split up for the evening. Kimpa Vita and Luther decided to take a stroll through the lantern-lit streets, hand in hand, quietly discussing their future.

Meanwhile, Alaric and Kael wandered through the night market. The stalls were filled with all kinds of items: colorful fabrics, protective talismans, finely crafted weapons, and sugary treats.

"Look at this," Kael said, stopping at a stand of old dusty books. "There are grimoires here I've never seen before. I could learn a lot about local magic."

Alaric smirked, his eyes amused. "Always with the magic. Maybe you could find a spell to make yourself less cranky after a long hike."

Kael gave him a mock indignant look. "I'll have you know I'm a model of good cheer compared to you when you're hungry."

Alaric burst into laughter. "Touché, Kael. Touché."

While they bantered, Alaric spotted a stand of weapons and armor. Approaching, he examined the swords, axes, and especially the reinforced armors.

"We could upgrade our gear," he suggested, picking up a reinforced leather bracer. "This protection might come in handy for the next ambush."

Kael nodded. "You're right. We never know what we'll encounter next."

Alaric purchased several pieces of armor for himself, as well as for Kimpa Vita and Luther, promising to give them the items later. He knew they would need every advantage they could get in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Luther and Kimpa Vita found themselves in a small park on the outskirts of town. The view overlooked a valley, and the stars shone brightly in the clear night sky. Luther, his gaze lost in the stars, turned to Vita.

"I feel like we've never really had a chance to talk... about everything." He gestured vaguely at the sky and the world around them, but Vita understood what he meant—their flight, their future, their kingdom.

"You're right," she murmured, resting her head on his shoulder. "The throne of Mbanza still waits for me. But I'm not sure if I'm ready to take it back."

Luther, usually more reserved, gently squeezed her hand. "No matter what happens, I'll be by your side. We'll rebuild Mbanza together."

Vita nodded, a sad smile on her lips. "I know. But sometimes I wonder if the throne is worth all these sacrifices."

Luther didn't reply, simply gazing up at the stars in silence. He knew the decision wasn't hers alone. Mbanza needed Kimpa Vita, just as much as he needed her by his side.

Back at the inn, Alaric and Kael collapsed onto the soft beds of their room. Kael, flipping through one of the grimoires he had bought, looked up at Alaric.

"We've come a long way since that chasm," he said, his tone suddenly more serious. "Sometimes, it feels like we haven't stopped in ages."

Alaric nodded slowly. "True. But there's still more ground to cover."

Kael nodded, a smirk forming. "Still, I don't regret any of it. Even if you've made me run through countless forests, I know I'm where I'm supposed to be."

Alaric smiled as well. "You're not the worst companion either."

They shared a lighthearted laugh, the camaraderie between them palpable. This moment of respite, though fleeting, gave them renewed strength to face what lay ahead.
