A Dark Crest Novel Opal had been heading home with her mistress when they we're attacked. The carriage turns over, killing her mistress. She escapes with her life. She runs into the woods where she meets an unexpected friend. There she learns that not everyone she had once trusted has her best intentions.
I open my eyes and look around the upside down wooden carriage. I sat up, my head was pounding, I grabbed it in pain. My fingers are met with a thick sticky liquid, I move my hand away, to see blood. My head must’ve been banged up during the crash. That’s right. We crashed.
Coming to my senses, I look around for my Mistress, the Viscountess. My eyes wander around the carriage, and land on her. She appeared to be badly bruised. I use all of my strength to crawl over to her. I gently shake her, attempting to awaken her. “My lady! You must wake up.” I place my ear to her chest, I listen for a heart beat, but there isn't one.
I placed a kiss upon her head before turning toward the carriage window that was set overtop of me. The window being the only visible exit, I layed on my back, and kicked the glass. I kicked it again, again, and again till it broke, causing glass to fly everywhere. I held my arms up, in an attempt to shield myself. The glass cut up my arms, and legs, but I now had a way out.
I gripped the top of my carriage and lifted myself out. As I land my knees buckle, and I fall to the ground. I sit up, and look to my left, to see the carriage driver, Phil, lying dead next to me, with an arrow in his side. I backed away in horror at the sight.
An arrow flew by me, hitting the side of the carriage. I stood up, and saw three men, holding bows. I quickly ducked behind the carriage. And despite my injuries I was able to take off running, into the woods, nearby. As I ran, I found my vision began to fade to black, my legs went weak, and I soon once again lost consciousness.
