Luke and Stella met at the police station the next morning, both with bags under their eyes. They were clearly exhausted from staying up all night and trying to find any clues that could lead them to the killer.
"Any luck?" Stella asked, looking at Luke with hopeful eyes.
"Unfortunately not," Luke replied, shaking his head. "We've gone through all the CCTV footage from the surrounding areas, but nothing seems to have caught the killer in action."
Stella sighed, feeling a sense of disappointment wash over her. "What about the forensic report? Did it give us anything useful?"
Luke pulled out a small notebook and flipped through the pages. "The only thing they found was a strange symbol etched into the side of the building. They're not sure what it means, but it could be a lead."
Stella leaned in, her interest piqued. "What kind of symbol?"
Luke took out his phone and showed her a picture. It was a simple yet intricate design that resembled a bird with outstretched wings. "It's not something I've ever seen before," he admitted. "But it could be a clue. Maybe the killer left it behind intentionally as a message."
Stella nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. "We should take a closer look at the symbol and see if we can find any connections to the victim or the killer."
Luke agreed, and the two of them set off to examine the symbol more closely. They drove to the crime scene and parked their car nearby. As they got out and approached the building, Stella noticed something strange.
"Luke, look at this," she said, pointing to the ground. "There are footprints leading away from the building."
Luke followed her gaze and saw a set of muddy footprints leading towards the nearby woods. "Let's follow them," he said, determination in his voice.
The two of them followed the footprints, carefully making their way through the dense forest. After several minutes of walking, they came across a small clearing. In the center of the clearing was a small stone altar, with the same symbol from the crime scene etched into the stone.
Luke and Stella exchanged a look, realizing that they were onto something big. "This must be the killer's hideout," Luke whispered, drawing his gun.
Suddenly, they heard a rustling in the bushes. They turned to face the sound, and out of the foliage emerged a tall, muscular man with a wild look in his eyes.
"Stop right there," Luke ordered, pointing his gun at the man. "You're under arrest for the murder of Clara Williams."
The man let out a low chuckle, his eyes darting back and forth between Luke and Stella. "You think you've caught me, do you?" he sneered. "You have no idea what you're up against."
With lightning-fast reflexes, the man lunged at Luke, knocking him to the ground. Stella tried to help, but the man was too strong. He overpowered her easily, leaving her lying on the ground as he disappeared back into the forest.
Luke slowly got to his feet, shaken but determined. "We'll get him next time," he vowed, helping Stella up.
As they made their way back to the car, Luke couldn't shake the feeling that they were getting closer to the truth. But he also couldn't shake the feeling that they were in way over their heads.
