Katherine's heart pounded as she walked back towards the gathering. Kieran was still standing near the Dowager, a respectful distance maintained by the crowd around them. His gaze scanned the room, and the moment it landed on her, a sense of relief washed over his face. He smiled at her, a small nod of acknowledgment her way, silently urging her forward.
Katherine's palms felt clammy, and she absently smoothed her gown, wishing the tension in her body would release. She could feel eyes on her; most people in the pack had been talking about her relationship with Kieran for a while now. Most of them were confused as to who she was and why the alpha was being openly affectionate with her. Some wondered if she was his mate but then refuted it again. 'If the alpha found his mate, he would announce it,' they said. Katherine herself had heard a couple of words thrown at her. Astrid had told her to ignore the words because people will always talk.
