[Music recommendations:In the Middle of the Night" by Elley Duhé]
The soft hum of the night settled around Kamsi, a quiet symphony that did little to ease the tension that knotted in her chest. Her desk was littered with scattered notes, the words on the pages blurring into one indistinct mess as exhaustion tugged at her. The clock on the wall ticked past midnight, and her eyelids felt as heavy as lead, but then—a sound. A faint scuffle. Her muscles stiffened, every nerve jolted awake. A shadow danced across her balcony, and before she could fully process the movement, a figure leapt over the fence with eerie grace, landing silently on the other side.
Her breath hitched in her throat. "Xavier?" she whispered, voice trembling as he stepped into the dim, golden light spilling from her bedside lamp. He was here. In her room.
His gaze swept over her, dark and unfathomable, like he could see straight through her, unraveling every hidden thought. She froze, rooted to the spot as his presence enveloped her. A pulse of fear thrummed through her, but something else—something darker—quickly followed. Her heart raced in her chest, not from fear, but from something altogether different, more dangerous.
"What are you doing here?" The words escaped her before she could stop them, laced with disbelief. She instinctively took a step back, the cold wall at her back grounding her. She was trapped, cornered by his very existence.
Xavier's lips barely moved when he spoke, but the sound of his voice—the gravelly quality of it, so low and dark—made her pulse stutter. "I came to ask you something."
His words hung in the air like an unspoken challenge. He moved toward her, slow and deliberate, each step exuding a quiet intensity that made her breath catch. He was so close now, looming over her, his presence a force that filled the room. His height seemed to fill the space between them, making her feel smaller, like she was drowning in the weight of his gaze.
Kamsi's back pressed against the cool surface of the wall, her skin tingling as his proximity suffocated her. "W-what is it?" she stammered, her voice barely audible, the words scraping her dry throat. She wanted to say more, to push him away, but her body refused to cooperate.
Xavier's head tilted slightly, eyes narrowing in a way that made her stomach tighten. He studied her with an intensity that bordered on obsession, his lips curling into that familiar, devilish smirk that always made her skin burn. His eyes flicked to the wall beside her, and without breaking their gaze, his fingers brushed lightly against it, his touch featherlight but commanding. He was caging her in, subtly but undeniably.
"Why did you do it?" His voice dropped a few octaves, the words sliding from his mouth like silk dipped in honey, smooth yet insistent.
Kamsi's brow furrowed in confusion, but her body responded before her mind could catch up. A heat bloomed in her neck, creeping upward, and she found herself unable to look away from him. "D-do… what?" she whispered, every syllable trembling on her lips.
Xavier's gaze flicked down to her hair, his fingers reaching out to capture a stray lock. He ran it between his fingers, his touch sending a jolt through her, and for a moment, Kamsi forgot to breathe. She was hyper-aware of his every movement, of the way his scent—a mixture of crisp cologne and something darker, more primal—seemed to fill the room and cloud her senses.
His lips barely moved when he spoke again, his words like a whisper meant only for her. "Go to such lengths for me." His voice was a smooth drawl now, seductive and dangerous all at once. His hand dropped from her hair, his fingers grazing the wall again, drawing closer, as though his mere touch could create sparks between them.
Kamsi's chest rose and fell with each shallow breath, her heart pounding in her throat. She tried to look away, but his eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her feel naked. "I…" she tried to speak, but the words tangled in her throat, suffocated by the weight of the moment.
"Was it guilt?" His voice was barely more than a breath, his lips brushing just below her ear, and the sensation sent a shiver racing down her spine. "Or… was it something else?"
Her body tensed, as though bracing for something that was already happening. Her mind screamed at her to pull away, to fight, but her body betrayed her, melting into the heat he radiated. A strange warmth spread through her—heavy and thick, pooling in her stomach and twisting in ways she didn't want to acknowledge.
"What do you mean?" Her voice cracked, barely a whisper, her breath unsteady.
He drew back slightly, his gaze still trained on her lips. The air between them crackled with anticipation. "I mean…" He let the word dangle in the air, heavy with unspoken meaning. His eyes slid back to hers, dark with mischief, but there was something else there now—a challenge, a hunger. "Do you like me, Kamsi?"
Her heart slammed into her ribs, each beat deafening in her ears. Time slowed, the space between them narrowing, as the question hung in the air. Her mouth went dry, and she opened it, but no sound came out. She wanted to scream, to tell him to leave, but her body was betraying her, every inch of her drawn to him.
"If you don't deny it," Xavier whispered, his breath warm against her skin, lips hovering so close she could feel the whisper of them, "I'll take your silence as a yes."
The words sliced through her like a hot knife, leaving her frozen, breathless. Her pulse hammered in her ears, drowning out everything else, her thoughts a chaotic swirl of confusion and desire. She couldn't find her voice, couldn't force her body to react.
Xavier chuckled softly, the sound dark and rich, and it slid down her spine like silk, leaving a trail of heat in its wake. "Then there's no going back…" he murmured, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear, sending another shiver through her.
In an instant, the world tilted, and his lips were on hers, crashing into her with a force that took her breath away. His kiss was unrestrained, raw—each movement of his lips leaving her dizzy, caught in the storm of emotion and passion he had unleashed. Kamsi's hands reached out, instinctively gripping the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer, needing more.
Her eyes fluttered closed, her mind spinning in a haze of sensation. Everything else ceased to exist. The only sound was the thundering of her heart, the only feeling the heat of his skin against hers. She couldn't think, couldn't process, only feel. Xavier was here, with her, and in that moment, she didn't care about anything else.
Her body pressed against his, her chest heaving with every breath, but the distance between them was still too far. Too far to stop, too far to pull away. And just like that, the kiss deepened, a whirlwind of fire and chaos, and Kamsi was lost in him completely, unable to stop it, unable to resist.
