Chapter 36: Chase Explains His Reaction

After Harlan left, Helina realized she was hungry so she entered the shared kitchen. Chase looked up from his spot in front of the stove. He liked to cook he’d told her, but didn’t get much chance to some days. “Hungry?”

“I’m starved.”

He was cooking a steak and she could smell potatoes baking in the oven. He smiled. “I made enough for both of us in case you changed your mind. Does Harlan need anything?”

“Harlan left.”

“Did you have a fight?”

“No, he has business to take care of.”

“How are you?” Chase asked.

“You’ve asked me that about a thousand times.”

“I’m just making sure the answer is still the same.”
