The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Size problem

"It's getting late," I upped my pace since it was getting close enough to noon that someone would probably come to get us soon.

There was no way that such a convenient upgrade to my physical camouflage skill existed. There had to be some kind of negative to it. Problem was that my system rarely told me anything about abilities I couldn't use so I wouldn't be able to figure it out until I had it. I could worry about that later. Right now I was more worried about getting back to school without anyone noticing the slight change in my look.

We were sent to the portal station the moment we ran into a teacher, and we went there without complaint. I appreciated the advantage my blank expression brought me in situations like this. No one could tell that I was worried about anything. Just keep walking like nothing in the world would bother me right now. Most of the first years knew who we were by now.

It wouldn't take long for the eyes of the entire school to be on us. We'd come out of nowhere, and proven ourselves to be among the strongest in our year. Sure there were other academies, but the fact that one of us was a mage, another a natural ability user, and me, the nobody, was their top fighter. Then there was my whole fake ability I was hiding behind. New abilities were rare.

Even if mine was a fake one I'd made up on the spot it would draw attention. The biggest problem I had was the massive number Jackers I'd killed down in the canyon. If those numbers had been included in our scores than we would have probably broken a record. As it was the tier fifteen kill I'd made had already put us on the map. We're going to need to leave soon.

There was no getting around it. I wasn't even sure going back to the school was the best idea at the moment. Those tiny sleep quarters only shrunk more, and more the bigger I got. I was taller than Ethan now. I wouldn't be able to use him as a comparison anymore.

Maybe I should switch to Goliath? No. That wouldn't work for long either. The system was right though my growth rate had gotten significantly slower than it had been. I was only gaining a few inches each level unlike before when my body mass would increase by nearly a third with each level.

Granted a couple of inches each level was still a lot considering my body grew with each level as well. We were sent through the portal in one of the first groups. I stretched, and yawned as we came out the other side of the portal. Walking out of the portal station, and heading straight back to the dorms. I was more worried about how much I'd grown, and if I would still fit in my room.

Savannah split off from the group, and headed towards the staff facilities. If I had to guess. She was probably headed that way to talk her father. I was sure that she wouldn't say something about me so it didn't bother me too much. Today was an automatic off day so the only thing we had to worry about was keeping to ourselves.

Ethan was still angry about what I'd done this morning so he wasn't feeling chatty when we got back to the room. I walked back into my room, and threw my dirty clothes into the shoot before reverting back to my dragon form, and immediately realizing a major problem. The room was too small now for me to get comfortable. It was a tiny room really. Barely four feet wide, and eight feet long.

My body was close to the walls on both sides of me. The length of the room was the real problem. I had to jam my tail in the wall to give my head enough room to lower it closer to the ground. My neck was long enough that I'd almost drove my horns into the roof when I switched forms. I shrunk back down, and went into the common area.

Before growing back into my original form. Using my tail to block the door.

"What are you doing?" Ethan looked at me funny.

"The room is too small," I snorted.

"You can't just be in your true form out here," Ethan frowned, "What if someone comes in?"

"I can't sleep in there either," I couldn't stretch or raise my head in here either, "You know how I get when I don't get enough sleep."

The common area was about double the size of my room. The roof wasn't any higher than my room though so I had to keep my head lowered.

"We either need to figure something else out or get out of here," My tail twitched as I shifted my weight, "Because this kind of thing will become a problem quickly."

"Please figure something else out," Ethan acted odd for Ethan.

"Why do you want to stay?" I cut through the awkwardness that is Ethan, "There must be some reason you need to stay."

"I want to fight my brother," Ethan stated bluntly.

"Your brother?" I cocked my head.

"He's fighting the winner of the tournament in a month," Ethan smiled nervously, "I want to show him that I'm not weak."

"That's a long time to sleep in a space that feels like a coffin," I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Yeah," Ethan got quiet again for a few minutes before mumbling, "It's dumb." Ethan turned around slowly, "I shouldn't have asked."

"I'll think about it," I switched back to my human form, and got dressed quickly.

I headed towards the simulation hall where Goliath liked to hang out. It didn't take me long to get there. I opened the door, and headed in. Goliath had made it back to the simulation hall by then. He seemed to be pondering something.
