The number of students was way bigger than what Kai expected. He changed his clothes for the academy's uniform — a dark and long robe with green adornments — and went downstairs to the main hall.
His uniform had a single glyph on its right chest. Kai didn't know what that was at first, but after entering the main hall and seeing the other students, he realized what it was.
All students had the same uniform, but what differed was the glyphs. He was in his first year there, so his uniform only had one glyph.
When Kai arrived at the main hall, some people looked at him but only for a short period. They saw nothing extraordinary about him.
It was good. Kai disliked receiving too much attention. The students were sitting in long benches, and there was an elevated area where headmaster Finley and the other teachers were. They were up there to make sure all the students could see and hear them.
The first-year students were in total awe as they looked around the school, seeing its majestic architecture for the first time. Kai was one of the few that had a blank expression. He was already used to the academy at that point.
"Greetings, dear students," Finley said as he opened up his arms, and smiled.
His voice was loud enough for all of them to hear it. Kai was pretty sure he was using some type of spell to enhance his voice. There was no way his voice would travel through that massive hall, and Finley didn't look like he was screaming either.
"I am Finley, the current headmaster of Brainheart's Magic Academy, and I am here to say: welcome!"
Finley started clapping, and the students did the same.
"We will now have the introduction of all the teachers that will be teaching this year. Some you already know, while others are knew."
There were a total of 15 teachers in the Brainheart Academy. Out of the 15, Kai knew two of them very well: Jane and Luke. Since the day he had seen the shadow, Luke became more friendly with him, but they never talked about that subject again.
Well, Luke did say that he searched the woods and found nothing different or unusual, and that Kai needed to stop thinking about that night. 'It was probably your mind playing tricks,' Luke said to him at the time.
As for the remaining 13 teachers, Kai had seen a few of them during the two months he stayed in the school, but he didn't know much about them. He didn't even know their names.
Jane was responsible for Herbology and Healing Magic while Luke was responsible for Magical Beasts. Kai listened to Finley while he introduced the other teachers and what subjects they would be teaching.
Kai paid some attention to it, but he also knew the teachers themselves would introduce them during their classes, so there was no need to focus too much on that.
A few teachers wouldn't even be teaching Kai in the first place. Some subjects were meant for second year students, and onward.
After the introduction ended, headmaster Finley gave the students their room's number, and asked them to place their bags there.
"The classes will start in the afternoon," Finley said, "This will give you enough time to settle in. Thank you, and once again, welcome to the Brainheart Magic Academy."
Kai returned to his room, but it was not to place his bags there — he had done that two months ago — but he wished to know who his roommate would be.
To his luck, his roommate was not one of the arrogant nobles, and was in fact someone with a similar backstory as himself. A dark-skined teenager who had come from afar.
"How did you place your bags so fast? When I came here, the room was still locked, yet your things are here!" the student said when Kai arrived there.
That was hard to explain. Kai looked at the boy and said, "I ran as fast as I could to place my things here, and then locked the door, only to remember I would be sharing my room with someone else. I am Kai, by the way."
The youth looked at Kai, and said, "Makes sense. Trevor, nice to meet you."
Trevor extended his hand for a handshake. Kai helped him settle in the room, and they talked during the whole morning. It was important to know the person who you would be sharing the room for the whole year, at least Kai thought so.
Trevor was energetic, and friendly. He was excited to start learning magic, and he kept saying how lucky he was to get a spot in such a prestigious academy.
'He is probably talented to have secured a spot. He doesn't come from rich families,' Kai thought.
Kai checked his pocket-watch to make sure he wouldn't be late for the special welcoming lunch.
"Nice watch you got there," Trevor said.
"Thanks. It's a family heirloom," Kai said, the image of his father crossing his mind, "Let's go there to eat. It's almost time."
They went into the dinning hall and ate the special lunch with the other students, and then afternoon came, meaning it was time to start learning magic.
The first class Kai had was with a teacher called Wanessa, and she was responsible for a few subjects during the year, and the first one was called Introduction to Magic I.
Brainheart Academy had around 500 students in total, which was way less than what most academies had, but that was because they preferred quality over quantity.
Still, there were more first-year students that year when compared to others. The older students were in their last year, graduation year, and that's when the academy opened up more spots.
Because of the high number of first-year students, the classes were packed with people. Kai's class, Introduction to Magic I had a total of 50 students. Trevor was there with him, and they sat close to each other.
"I am Wanessa, and I will be responsible to teach you about," Wanessa said, grabbing a pen to write on a white board, "Introduction to Magic."
"You might think that this subject is irrelevant, but I can assure you it is not. The basics are the most important part, and not learning them properly will make you suffer in the long run. Now, let's start today's class."
