Chapter 9

Charlie pulled into the daycare parking lot and up to the entrance, then waited while Melissa entered with Nathan and signed him in for the day.

When she returned, she was laughing.

“What?”

“Nathan just asked if you could bring your teacher to the house for dinner so he could learn stuff, too.”

His heart melted. Nathan was such a sweet little boy. So caring. He hated to hurt him, though.

“Did you tell him that’s probably not going to happen?”

Melissa shot him a sly smile. “You couldinvite him to dinner on Sunday.”

Sunday dinners had become a tradition for them. Always at her house—because she insisted, saying it worked better for her when Nathan was near his toys—and always several hours. They watched football, then baseball during the season, too, placing bets on each game. But neither ever invited anyone to dinner.

He scoffed. “Not going to happen. Besides, Sunday dinner is family time.”
