Chapter 24

Anita knocked on my door and came in. I handed her the tablet and charger, but she leaned on my desk and looked at me.

"Rough day?"

"You could say that," I said. "Marilyn barely said anything to me. I think ne hates me. Maybe ne thinks that I wanted to go with Rickard."

"I'm sure Marilyn is having as hard a time with this as you are," Anita said. "When I was assaulted, my boyfriend couldn't deal with the fact that he wasn't there to save me. He started drinking and following me around. He got super-protective, then he got jealous. We finally broke up and he moved to a different city."

"You?"

"Yeah," Anita said, "Me. It was after I was a cop, but I was off-duty. It was night. I was swimming at the beach so I didn't have my gun with me. There's not much room in a bikini for a gun. This guy came out of nowhere and got some rope around my neck. I tried to fight, but he choked me out. They found me naked with the rope still on my neck behind some rocks."

"How did you get over it?"
