Meng Bao returned sour-faced. It took him a while that I had just finished eating my cheesecake. I noticed that Meng Bao was not in a good mood and asked, "Meng Bao, your look pissed off."
"I am," Meng Bao affirmed. He sat on the chair again and ate his cheesecake angrily. But he didn't seem to be in the mood to tell me about what happened and who called him.
Albeit curious, I decided not to pry more about his privacy. We were not close enough to know about each other's relationship. Who knew maybe Meng Bao actually had a relationship, and the one who called just now was his real girlfriend, but due to his job as a rental boyfriend, he would definitely hide it.
'Who would date someone in a relationship anyway, at least not me. I'm not a homewrecker,' I thought.
'Well, I guess it's okay. Everything he said up until now is just part of his rental boyfriend service. From telling me that he likes a girl with appetite, sleeping on my shoulder, telling me that he enjoys our date, slipped his tongue and planning our imaginary life together as a married couple…'
'Maybe it's all just part of his rental boyfriend service…'
I knew it was all about professionalism. As a woman in my late twenties, working as a secretary for almost five years, I knew that rental boyfriend serviced demanded professionalism. Maybe from his Meng Bao's gentleness, his sweet words, and his obvious attraction to me, were all part of his rental boyfriend protocol.
But I couldn't help to fall for it. He was a sweet guy who made me comfortable and made my heart fluttered…
'Aish, Shi Ying, you have been single for almost twenty-seven years, and now you fall in love this easily? Where is your single dog willpower! Meng Bao is just doing his job, and I should support him by giving him a gift later!' I said to myself to steel my willpower.
But I couldn't help to ask Meng Bao, "May I know who is the caller?"
"It's no one important," Meng Bao replied. He frowned and added, "Ying Jie, let's not talk about her. We are on a date right now, remember?"
'Her?'
'Ahh… well, it's not my place to ask anyway. I should just continue this date…'
But when I looked at Meng Bao again, I couldn't help but feel disheartened. Maybe I need to sort out my feeling for a moment.
'Shi Ying, remember, this is not a rom-com written by an author who wants to write a cherry blossom romance. You can't just simply fall in love with a man you just met twice. What is this? Frozen 3? Don't be too cheap and desperate!'
Meng Bao seemed to notice something was wrong. Thus he asked me, "Ying Jie, is there something wrong? Do you have somewhere else you want to go? I will accompany you—"
"—No need, Meng Bao. You did a great job accompanying me today," I snipped his words. I showed a perfunctory smile at him and said, "Well, don't you look at my appearance right now? I'm here only to do my weekly grocery shopping. I think we are done for today, Meng Bao."
"B—But—"
"Ah, about your payment? I know that you want to get paid. Don't worry, I will gift you, okay?" I said. I got up from my seat and pushed the trolley to check out my grocery.
"No, Ying Jie…"
"Ah, is it about meeting my parents? Don't worry, I will contact you again later. Just give your time for the weekend next week. I will pay you double or triple if you do the job nicely," I snipped again. I honestly didn't want to see Meng Bao for now because I needed to calm myself first.
I needed to stay professional, right?
I pushed the trolley to the cashier, but Meng Bao suddenly grabbed my arm. I looked at Meng Bao with a frown frowned, "Meng Bao, it's okay. The date is over. You can leave now."
"Ying Jie, it's not about money…" Meng Bao said. His expression looked lost, like a puppy that had been abandoned. And it was lethal for me.
'DAMN! Why does he need to show me that kind of face! This is unfair!'
"Well, you still have something else to do, right? Don't worry, ah. Your Ying Jie understands," I shrugged his hand off my arm, but Meng Bao had surprisingly incredible strength, even against a strong woman like me.
"Why are you leaving so early, Ying Jie? Did I do something wrong?" Meng Bao asked. He sounded sad.
'No, not really, Meng Bao. It's just me who doesn't know how to control my feeling. I'm twenty-seven already but still fall in love like a seventeen years old girl. Let me go first, so I can sort of my own feeling!' I yelled in my heart.
"N—No, Meng Bao, you did great, but I need to leave now," I struggled and tried to push him.
"But I want to spend more time with you, Ying Jie…" Meng Bao said, still holding my arm.
Few people started taking a glance at us. I was ashamed because this really looked like a cheesy romcom. I pushed Meng Bao as hard as he could, although he still didn't budge. It seemed that he realized I wasn't in the mood to meet him right now. He finally released his grip and let me go.
Like a Walmart Cinderella, I pushed my trolley to the cashier and quickly checked out my grocery. I glanced at the figure of a handsome man, still standing, looking at me with a lost expression, like an abandoned puppy.
I used my card and paid for my grocery, then left as fast as I could.
'I'm sorry, Meng Bao, but I can't look at you for now. My heart can't handle it.'
