Confrontation

The next two days were like the most crucial part of Lola's existence. She was tormented by anxiety attacks, nightmares and fear of the unknown. There were so many 'what ifs' to ponder and she dreaded the answers that crossed her thoughts.

Now and then Lola would reach out to Chelsea asking about Brian's health and well-being.

"Brian is doing all right, Lola. He has a lot of family members looking after him. It is you that I'm worried about. I need to stop tormenting your poor heart. Just give him a little time to heal and everything will be okay."

These were Chelsea's reassuring words.

However, as soothing as these words sounded, Lola was far from calm. She was emotionally drained, hopeless and on the verge of losing her sanity.

Whenever Jamal and Maureen left for their place of work, she would confine herself to her bedroom, and sometimes cry her eyes out.

After her three days of self-administrated house arrest were over, Lola cleaned herself up and got ready to confront her heartless boss.

Cladded in a sky blue tie sash suiting dress paired with easy-going office sandals and tinted wide frame aviator sunglasses, Lola looked like a stunning model about to walk the ramp. Her smooth textured wavy blonde hair was styled in a high updo bun and her earlobes were adorned with daffodil flower yellow gold stud earrings.

"You look stunning even without makeup, Lola," Maureen praised Lola.

Lola sighed to push out the tension swirling deep down in her stomach. "Thanks."

"Are you sure you still want to do this?"

"Yes." Lola pushed out forced air through her mouth and picked up her handbag.

"Jamal thinks you're making a bigger mistake by confronting your boss," Maureen said calmly while observing Lola's frigid expression.

"I have to do this, Maureen," Lola replied firmly.

"Would you like me to tag along? I'm on night shift t..."

"No... I need to do this all by myself."

"Can you at least call Chelsea to accompany you?" Maureen persisted.

"No."

"What about..."

"I have to be on my way now, Maureen." Lola slowly moved away from her towards the door. "Thanks for your concern. I'll be back soon."

As Lola turned the doorknob to exit the house, Ellen called out to her softly.

"Don't be discouraged, Lola. It's often the last key in a bunch that opens the lock."

Lola felt tears well up in her eyes. But she quickly thanked Maureen's mum and left before anyone tried talking her out of her decision.

After going on a compulsory two days leave to take care of his bruised face, Ian Forde finally resumed work on the third day.

He didn't bother raising any form of dust concerning Richmond's animalistic behaviour, neither did he press charges. Deep down, he felt he was still paying the price for Lizzy's death and he held no grudge against his one-time best friend.

Ian had a lot on his plate and was forced to take one conference call after another in his executive office.

Afterwards, he attended an earlier scheduled managerial meeting with his departmental managers and a few unit heads.

Ian was in the middle of brainstorming on on new advertising deal when Lola Hart unceremoniously barged into the conference meeting room.

"Mrs Hart, you can't be here. You have to wait until the boss is done." Ian's secretary was almost in tears as she spoke to the stone-faced Lola.

Lola ignored the whining secretary by the conference room entrance as she took off her sunglasses for everyone to see her narrowed gaze. She strolled into the room, commanding everyone's attention like she always did in the past.

"Is she really pregnant for the boss?"

"The post said she slept with the boss and got infected..."

"Are you sure it was the boss she slept with?"

"But she doesn't look sick one bit..."

"The virus is not written on the face, stupid..."

"Would she still be working with us in her sickly state..."

"I heard her husband threw her out of the house..."

"Poor woman... she was one of our best..."

"Why are you talking as though she is dead?"

Different thought-provoking and heart-wrenching comments filtered in the room as Lola slowly approached Ian. It added more salt to her injury, causing her heart to bleed afresh.

"I need everyone to leave this room this instant," Ian commanded in his usual arrogant and authoritative tone.

Instantly the room was engulfed with shuffling feet on the marble floor and more nasty side comments.

"You, despicable, selfish, worthless scum of the earth." Lola lifted her right hand to strike Ian but he caught her hand in mid-air.

"Hah!" Everyone in the room gasped.

"Get your filthy hands off me you good-for-nothing swine!" Lola raised her left hand to also strike but Ian caught it again and arrested both hands behind her back.

"I said, everyone gets lost." Ian bellowed ferociously, causing all the nosy staff to scramble out of the room.

"Get off me, you miserable bastard!" Lola tried to wriggle her hands-free.

Sadly, Ian had her firmly trapped in his tormenting grip.

"How can you ask me to take my hands off you when you are the one desperately seeking to have your hands all over me just like you did back then at the hotel?"

Ian teased mockingly while sniffing in her captivating blend of citrus and mint perfume.

"Drop dead, Ian Forde! You hear me, drop dead!" Lola cried out, feeling overwhelmed by his muscular power.

Ian leaned closer and whispered flirtatiously in her left ear. "I'm sorry to disappoint you sweetheart, but no one is dying today." He released her from his tight grip and forcefully pushed her into the nearest conference room leather seat.

"Now be a good girl, and sit still. Otherwise, you'll get yourself hurt. You know the last thing I want to do is hurt you."

"Hurt!" Lola's body shook with so much rage. "You took advantage of my plight, sexually abused me, Infected me, ruined my marriage and you dare talk about hurt."

Just then, Lola's phone started ringing. Wiping her streaming tears, she took the call and gave her current location to the person on the other end of the phone.

"Wait a sec, who are you talking to on the phone?" Ian's initial playfulness was replaced with an icy stare as he snatched Lola's phone away from her hands.

At that same moment, the door to the conference room was thrown open.
