Blood dripped down from a small cut in Subaru's cheek

Halibel stood in front of Subaru, balancing a dagger on one of his claws as to mock Subaru

Halibel was training Subaru once again

But this time, he was taking it much less seriously

After he arrived home from his 'job' he could tell Subaru was distracted and uncoordinated

Instead of holding back his punches, Subaru would charge them full of mana

Subaru would violently cast spells ignoring the surrounding environment

Halibel could tell something was bothering Subaru

So Halibel was testing Subaru, he was testing to see if Subaru's emotions would overtake him in this fight

Subaru threw a powerful punch at Halibel

Halibel dodged easily seeing that Subaru was attacking with almost zero skill

As Halibel dodged he could feel the force of the punch flying past him, and destroying the base of a tree causing it to topple over

Halibel looked back to Subaru who was panting heavily

Subaru's eyes held a type of desperation in them

The desperation of someone weak trying to get stronger but being driven by only negative emotions

The way Subaru was training wasn't beneficial, if Subaru keeps this up he is more likely to just hurt himself.

Halibel noticing that Subaru's attacks were getting stronger but slower and more unrefined decided that he had enough

Halibel dropped his daggers beside him and sat down legs crossed

"Ok Subaru that's enough, we need to discuss this."

Subaru looked at Halibel like he was crazy

"What are you doing? And I'm not here to talk, I'm here to get stronger."

"Why?"

"...Revenge."

"Is that so?"

"Well... yeah...."

"Subaru I've noticed an unpleasant change in your attitude from when I last saw you."

"How so?"

"You fight and train till your knees tremble sure. You fight until there's no mana left to fight and even then; you pick yourself back up. That was the boy I saw who first came here, someone who was completely focussed on his goals and wanted nothing more than to achieve them."

Halibel learned forwards

"So, what happened, you seem... distracted like as your body trains for one goal your mind wanders to another."

Subaru eyed Halibel down

"Nothing happened."

"Oh really? You know most crimes are spread through the assassin's network as a type of gossip and a way to help us track down targets."

"So?"

"Subaru how do I put this, yesterday there was a sighting that a Demi-human was killed by powerful fire spirit magic. Now since it was an unimportant person nobody cared. Even so, anyone could deduce that Mr Neo was the culprit behind that since he's been the only person here who's skilled in spirit arts and has a known fire spirit."

Subaru tensed up

"So, tell me Subaru why did you kill that Demi human and why does it bother you?"

Subaru looked away from Halibel

Even when talking to Aeolus he wanted to avoid talking about what deeply bothered him.

But Halibel wasn't like Aeolus

He wanted answers, and not just side story's

Subaru frowned

"There were two deaths you know?"

"No, I haven't heard about a second death."

"Well, that Demi human was attacking an innocent boy, she was stealing from him, and I stopped her. But when I offered to let her walk away unharmed, she agreed just to attack me while my back was turned. So, I killed her."

"And why does that bother you?"

"... Because I allowed the boy to die."

"You let him die? Did you walk away or something after killing the demi-human?"

"No!... I was just too weak and slow, when I arrived, he was still alive and breathing. If I had the strength to have easily dealt with that demi-human I could have saved him in time."

Halibel walked over to Subaru and tapped him on the head

"Hay! Why did you do that?" Subaru asked while rubbing his head

"You're an idiot you know."

"Wha?"

"Why are you blaming yourself for trying to save two lives. It just sounds like you tried helping both live, but one decided to test her luck and wasted too much time.

"But I-"

"What? You tried your hardest and that's what counts, nobody can save everyone. That's something you learn Su-san. Saving everyone is a fool's goal, you must focus on a possible goal. Don't force an impossible expectation onto yourself just to be disappointed when the world gives you a reality check."

Subaru looked down to the ground

Halibel's words... made a bit of sense.

But Subaru knew deep down that if he truly wanted to he could just return by death... but after dying so many times he didn't want to do that ever again.

Why get stronger if he's just going to kill himself when a situation gets too hard

Subaru knew he would have to learn to let go of his nasty habits

He didn't expect them to go away overnight

But he would at least value his life and what he did have in the present

Subaru looked Halibel in the eyes

He sighed a deep sigh

"Alright... you... playboy. Your right."

"Playboy? That's a new one."

"Yeah... look I once trained with a really wise man who warned me that sometimes I train just to distract myself instead of getting stronger. I don't want to make that mistake again."

Subaru summoned manifested his spirits

"What do you say we start over again? I'll do my best to focus on getting stronger."

"Finally, your making sense."

Halibel was happy to see some improvement in Subaru's attitude

Subaru was walking through the markets after a small training session

He wanted to buy some dinner

Subaru was looking through all the stalls

"Maybe soup, no, no I'll just buy some meat."

Eon appeared

"Subaru, not to ruin your human shopping... but how much money do you even have?"

Subaru stopped in place

"umm"

Subaru put his hands into the pockets of his jacket and pulled out three bronze coins.

"This may be enough to buy..."

"One Tatoe?"

"Maybe two?"

Aqua appeared

"No that's unacceptable. Go, earn some money and eat a healthy meal, a growing boy like you needs a healthy diet."

"I've been eating Halibel's diet for the past week or so I'm healthy enough. But I don't have enough money to sustain such a diet."

"Go earn some money now!"

"F-fine but what are you? My Mom?"

Subaru entered the Guild

Since he wasn't educated in whatever this planet taught finding a job would be hard...

So a job where he could just attack things was nice

Subaru made sure his jackets cloak was covering his face and moved deeper into the guild

"Hay nice jacket boy scout!"

Called a random person

"Oi, you know a spirit arts user would be welcome in our team."

Called a muscular man

Subaru just ignored them and moved on to the task board

He observed and noticed that there was a large abscess of ma-beast quests

There were no quests available at all

"Odd there's usually at least... 10."

Subaru did however see a wanted poster for a small gang of thief's

"Hmm, 50 silver coins for them alive huh?"

Subaru grabbed the wanted poster

"Well, girls guess it's time to go on a manhunt."

Subaru turned around and began to head out

He wasn't too sure why... but something felt off

Subaru stepped outside looked around but saw nothing

"Hmm hay girls watch my back... something just feels... wrong."

"Ok"

"You got it"

"No problem I suppose."

"Sure thing."

"Very well."

"Alright."

"Ok girls let's start."

Subaru felt his body become charged full of mana as he leapt high onto roofs and began his search for a crime.

On a roof not too far away from Subaru was a purple-haired knight surrounded by pieces of paper.

He was simply observing him and taking notes

Julius sighed

That person fits the description of Neo perfectly.

But Julius just had a feeling that Neo had more to him under the cloak

"*sigh* Well... Subaru... soon we will be reunited... I just..."

Julius looked around to make sure nobody would see him

Seeing nobody looking at him Julius allowed a few tears to slip

"I just hope... no I pray that you will forgive me. E-even we can't ever be friends again... I... just want you to know I'm sorry."

Julius wanted to run over to Subaru now and beg for his forgiveness

He wanted to embrace his friend and scream all his regret to him

But be it pride or guilt

Julius couldn't bring himself to approach Subaru

"Maybe... he is just some random guy... I'll follow Neo for a bit... gather more information."

Julius the knight began to follow stealthily from behind

Subaru was jumping from roof to roof at incredible speeds.

And all thanks to Aquas mental boosters he could easily spot the gang he had sought out to detain

Subaru was doing his best to locate the gang

He needed that money

Subaru wouldn't stop until they were in jail, and he was a tab opulent

Or at least Subaru thought that's how his evening would go

Instead, he spotted something that grabbed his interest a lot more than some gang

He saw a small demi-human girl being beaten up by two old teenagers

"So, this is how kids are brought up huh? Such unfair cruelty... I guess I can spare a moment."

As much as Subaru wanted to find the gang, get paid then go home, he just couldn't leave someone helpless and defenceless behind. He didn't want anyone else to feel what he felt in prison.

Subaru jumped down landing with a loud thud

Everybody turned to face the sudden intruder

The boys were concerned and a bit scared of the hooded figure

While the demi-human just hoped he was here to help

Subaru raised his head revealing not a disappointed expression but a face of anger

Subaru pointed his finger at the two boys

"What do you two think you're doing?"

Subaru asked with obvious agitation in his tone

One boy sighed in relief seeing that the man was human

"Hay do not, worry about it, we're only teaching this gross demi-human a lesson."

Said one boy

"Yeah, and besides she probably deserved it, bet she will go on to become a murder."

"Please h-help me, sir."

The Demi-human begged

Subaru approached the trio

"So, it seems discrimination and hatred will always exist even in a fantasy world... hate that extends past half elf's... say do you know who I am?"

"Uhm no I've never heard of you."

"Are you some thief? That's a good cloak for stealing."

"No... my name is Neo and I'm here to save that-."

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh"

Subaru was interrupted by the demi-human screaming

Subaru looked down in worry and confusion

"Stay away from me! You Monster! You killed my mother!"

Subaru realized exactly what was going on

"(oh no)"

"It's because of you I'm forced to be homeless like some gutter rat! I hate you!"

"... You're mother..."

"How could you!"

The boys snickered

"Wow, you're the man who burnt that demi-human?"

"You're a hero, Mr Neo."

Subaru stepped back

This certainly wasn't what he wanted

Subaru began to panic

What can he do?

"Aqua!"

Subaru had aqua freeze the shoes of the boys

They would be stuck to the ground but unharmed if they let the ice thaw

Subaru turned back to the demi-human

"I'm... sorry about your mother."

"Sorry doesn't bring her back to life!"

Subaru took off his hoodie purposely showing his face to another person who wasn't Halibel

"If it means anything... I tried to let her live."

"DOES THAT MATTER?!"

"Kinda she attacked me from behind while I was trying to save a civilian she had attacked."

"Oh my... she actually did it..."

"Hmm?"

"She said she would track down the person who scammed her and take her revenge as well as the money we needed to keep the house... AND WHAT DOES THAT MATTER? SHE HAD AN BURNT CORPSE! YOU KILLED HER WITH FIRE MAGIC! DO YOU LIKE TORTURING PEOPLE TO DEATH!"

"I..."

"SHUT UP I DON'T WANNA HEAR IT!"

The demi-human picked up a rock and threw it at Subaru before running away

Subaru was visibly shaking

All he wanted was to do good but... it seems he couldn't even do that right

All he could do was hurt people

"I'm a failure."

Subaru looked back to the boys

"D-don't hurt people again... be human."

And with that Subaru turned around and left

Subaru just walked home slowly

He didn't have the energy to mana jump home

He just wanted to try to forget the pain

"Hay girls... do we have any alcohol at home?"

"Not that I recall"

"You never brought any"

"Nope"

"No"

"Shame... I've never tried drunki alcohol before...but I heard some people use it to deal with stress."

"Subaru are you... ok?"

"No... I'm a failure."

"You did what you had to."

"Don't be so hard on yourself."

"No girls... All I want is for everyone to be happy... but I see now that I'm far too reckless."

"How will you change?"

Subaru entered his apartment

"Dunno... I just dont know."

Subaru walked inside not bothering to close the door

Subaru walked to his bed and just laid on it

He was staring at the ceiling hoping it would bring him some comfort

"Subaru, why did the demi-human react the way she did?"

"A-are you just rubbing it in my face now?"

"No, no not at all, I'm just trying to say that she was upset because we killed her mum. Maybe next time we just won't kill."

"... Heh sounds so logical when you say it like that... that is also probably for the best..."

"Subaru... let's just rest together... we will try our hardest to comfort you as you slumber."

"Sleep would be healthy."

Julius picked up his Metia

"Anastasia-sama, sorry for disturbing you so late at night, but without a doubt... I have found Subaru Natsuki. How should I proceed?"

Julius sounded strangely sad and ungracious

Anastasia on the other side was pleased to hear this news

"Ahh, it only makes sense that through my knowledge chain, we were able to weed him out eventually."

"My lady, how should I approach this situation?"

Julius asked again

"Try to bring him back with you peacefully but use force if necessary. And if something goes wrong, I'll alert Emilia and the other camps. Also try not to hurt him, Julius. It would be a very, very bad look for you to hurt him after all that torture."

"...My lady... I think physical force may be a... bad idea."

"Julius as much as it pains me to have to force him back, bringing him back is something we must do. Both for morals and business. So please don't fail me."

Anastasia hung up

"Alright Subaru, I'll give you to morning before I come to get you, consider it a friendship privilege." Julius laid down. And began to recall the events after he and Felix remembered who Subaru was.

Julius felt nothing but guilt.

He was supposed to be a friend to Subaru. Subaru was a man who did so much for them. Yet all he did in return was...

"*sigh* I'll save my apologies for tomorrow

Julius looked at Subaru's window and saw something odd

His room was glowing... why?

"Is he practising Yang magic? "

Julius thought about it and that kind of seemed like something Subaru would do

But little did he know...

Subaru awoke slowly staring at the ceiling

He didn't feel very motivated to train today

He almost just went back to sleep...

If it was not for Aeolus blowing him off the bed

"Oww, oww, oww what's the big idea?! I was just going to have a five-minute shut-eye!"

Subaru stood up rubbing the arm he fell on

"Hmph, how rude I suppose, sleeping through our evolution and insisting that you should sleep in, even after waking hours."

"Evolution?"

Subaru rubbed his eyes to clear his vision

And before him was a larger wind spirit

"Oh, now that you mentioned it, you have grown a little."

"Don't simplify our transformation to merely having a growth spurt Subaru."

"Our?"

Instead of answering with words, the other five spirits all manifested in front of Subaru.

Each slightly bigger than yesterday

"So... your now full spirits, right? The evolution above Quazi."

"That is correct Subaru."

Eon answered prepared to answer any question Subaru might have

But Blaise had other plans

"The reasons pretty simple, we bonded, and now we together can burn down entire villages. Simple right?"

If Blaise had a face, she would be smiling an innocent smile and Subaru knew it

"No"

Subaru crossed his arms

"Blaise we are not-."

"Bahahaha I'm just kidding Subaru."

"... You better be."

Subaru said sceptically

"Subaru, Subaru isn't it wonderful, I now possess more than enough mana to heal almost any wound. You will never have so much as a scratch for more than one minute with me around."

Aqua said ecstatically

"Aqua, one miniate to heal a scratch isn't good. That's actually a downgrade from your quazi form."

"Wahhh no, no I mean... I can heal you faster and better now."

"Does it take a minute to heal a scratch?"

"NO!"

"Alright then, that's great news. And I'll assume that everyone else got a fine power boost."

Shami floated over to Subaru

"Subaru comparing such a divine transformation to a mere power-up is insulting to us spirits."

"Sorry, sorry. So, it's nice to see my spirits grow up."

"NO"

"Fine, I'm glad to see my spirits become even more... incredible."

"... I'll allow it."

Toph interrupted Subarus and Shamis's conversation

"Sorry to interrupt you insulting the entire spirit race but don't humans like you need to eat?"

Subaru realized he hadn't eaten in the last two days ago

"Sigh* So much for Halibel's extremely important diet that I had to stick to... I'll just overcompensate today."

"Sure."

Toph saw nothing wrong with this

"Welp girls... let's do a little training with Halibel before we grab a job than a bite."

"You need to prioritize your health more Subaru."

Aqua stated with concern for her contactor

"I am... with strength I can look after my other needs. Like the basic human rights which... don't really seem to exist in a fantasy world but whatever I know my human rights... and I know how to enforce them."

Subaru made his way towards the door

"Alright Aqua, I may need to rely on your healing magic for this training station... which does mean I'm burring my body's candle from three sides... or maybe I'm just burring two sides but with a stronger flame... that point is I'll need to rely on you."

"Sigh* I'll do it, but just this once since it's unhealthy."

Subaru slipped his hoodie over his head

"Thanks, Aqua you're a lifesaver."

Subaru opened his door

As he stepped outside, he noticed someone sitting on a box facing towards his door

The figure looked tired

...It also had purple hair and wore a knight's outfit

Subaru didn't believe it

Julius was here and he was waiting for him

Right outside his apartment

Subaru tried to ignore Julius

He did feel some compelling emotions to attack Julius right now

But maybe if he ignored him, he would go away

"Subaru waits!"

Julius called his voice sounding a little disparate

Subaru bit his lip

"Who's Subaru? My name is Neo."

Subaru kept walking but stopped then Julius grabbed his shoulder softly but with a firm grip

"W-wait... please hear me out Subaru."

Subaru still hoping to fool Julius tried to keep his facade up

"Look, your mistaken, I am not Subaru. If your business is with him then I recommend looking elsewhere, only I live here."

Subaru pushed Julius' hand off his shoulder and kept walking but this time slightly faster

Julius felt cornered

His lady no, his whole kingdom wanted Subaru to return

Yet Subaru obviously didn't

Julius without thinking ran up to Subaru and removed his hoodie.

"Subaru! I'M SORRY, OK? PLEASE LET'S TALK!"

Subaru turned to Julius with a dead expression on his face

And spoke with a soft yet intimidating tone

"No, you tortured me... there's nothing to discuss..."

"S-su-?!"

Julius wanted to beg for Subaru's forgiveness

To remind Subaru of all his friends back at Lugunica who miss him dearly.

To even tell Subaru of Emilia's new feeling towards him

But Julius never received such a chance

Because right before him was six full spirits manifesting as Subaru seemed to be giving off a dangerous aura

Julius in a slight state of shock didn't react in time to dodge or parry the beam of light that the Yang spirit just shot at him

"Ahhhhhh!"

Julius yelled as a hole was punctured through his left arm rendering it useless

Julius looked at Subaru's expression as it slowly turned from an emotionless stare to an evil grin

"... Say that again knight."

Subaru said in a way that mocked Julius, he was relishing in his once tortures pain

Julius was experiencing the full front of Subaru's wrath

Subaru while unskilled, outclassed him in terms of damage and mana

His spirits while less experienced possessed unreal amounts of power and Subaru himself seemed to have learnt some shinobi arts

Julius wanted to try to quell Subaru's wrath, so he summoned his Quazi spirits and drew his sword with his good arm

And the two began to clash

Julius remembered when they first thought

It was an unfair stomping on his side

But now... he hated to admit it but Subaru had the advantage

With every attack, he put a lot of mana behind it causing a shock wave that hurt his hand

Julius still thought to the best of his ability

If defeating Subaru in combat is what he must do to fix everything then he would try anything

That was what Julius hoped would happen

So it was a real shame when Toph sunk him into the ground forcing him to block Blaise's fatal El goa with his sword

And preventing him from dodging Subaru's fists

Powerful mana infused fists

Subaru landed a powerful punch on Julius' face dislocating his Jaw and knocking some teeth out

Subaru then followed it up with a devastating punch directly to the nose breaking and squashing it

Subaru then forced Julius onto the ground placing a hand on his chest that was building up mana

"HOW DOES IT FEEL?!"

Subaru screamed his lungs out

Julius couldn't answer

"..."

Subaru almost finishing charging up anger spoke

"That's what I thought... see you in hell."

Subaru's attack was changed, and he was a second away from shooting it when

A demi-human grabbed his arm changing the mana bullets trajectory

Subaru then got sucker-punched to the head knocking him off Julius

Subaru looked back quickly and angrily to see Richardo hotting the floor to free Julius then bridal style carrying him as they escaped

Subaru stood back up

He was about to purposely kill someone

... And he felt disappointed... Disappointed that he didn't do it.

"Maybe I should start over the day and kill him properly," Subaru thought to himself

"Now what Subaru?" Asked Eon

"Let's not keep Halibel waiting."

Subaru spoke softly

"You know, humans usually if they fail a task, they just come back in larger numbers to complete that task."

Subaru clenched his fists

"It doesn't matter."

"Huh?" Said Aeolus

"I've already got an idea to avoid any further interruptions until you evolve while also being able to train with Halibel."

"How?"

"Hehe, you will see."

"Hmph so rude to keep secrets from your spirits."

Subaru began to walk towards Halibel's training ground

Subaru arrived a little late today

Halibel was impatiently waiting

"What took you Subaru? I'm generously giving you my time to teach you, you could at least show up on time."

Subaru bowed

"I'm very sorry, I was held up by an important event. It's my fault for being distracted. Please forgive me."

Halibel noticed that something was different about Subaru, but he could also tell that what Subaru was saying was the truth...

"Ok then, Subaru as punishment you must now fight me without mana boosters."

"Shit, wait, wait."

"Yeah?"

"I was thinking, we've been training in the same place for a while now, what if we went camping."

"Camping? Subaru we can't take a holiday"

"Yeah, I think the sword saint might arrive soon, so when he does I wanna be far away while still having you to train with."

"... why would the sword saint come here?" Halibel asked confused

"Well, you see, remember the missing poster?"

"Yes."

"Well a knight named Julius decided to hunt me down, but I kicked his ass but he managed to escape. And since Julius the average knight and Mr op sword saint are friends, Reinhard is probably going to come seeking me for his so-called justice."

Halibel put a hand on Subaru's shoulder

"Ok, ok we can go camping, but I warn you, the next month is going to be hell."

"I don't care, I need as much time as possible, or at least until my spirits become great spirits."

"That might be a while, I'll give you a month's worth of camping but remember I too have a life of my own here."

"Oh sorry."

"I mean these smokes won't smoke themselves."

"Whatever let's just go."

And so Subaru, his six contracted spirits and Halibel went camping.

"Heal him!" Yelled Felix

Felix and five other healers were pumping all their mana into Julius trying to save him

"Ok, he's stable." Yelled a healer

Julius slowly opened his eyes

And looked around him

He was in a hospital surrounded by healers including Felix

"Julius, what happened!?" Yelled Felix

Julius remembered what Subaru did

Julius just laid down and whispered in a broken tone

"I failed."

"You failed, what happened?"

"It's Subaru... he somehow got six full spirits to contract with him... and now even I can not beat him in a one on one battle."

"Subaru... beat you?"

Felix spoke shocked

"Yes, I never expected him to grow so much... but it's most likely that he only grew stronger after we all failed him... I would be proud of his strength if its backstory was not so cruel."

"Nyah, well ill be, Julius is humbling himself, never thought I would see the day... so what do we tell them?"

Julius looked at Felix

"As for Anastasia-sama, I'll tell her I failed... but I have no idea on how to bring this news to Emilia-sama."

"I pity Emilia."

Felix said with his ears down

The four royal groups had agreed to meet in the Roswaal manor

It was only fair since they were discussing Emilia's knight

Emilia wasn't doing too well, all the emotions that surfaced from Subaru being missing and being tortured when she was particularly to blame made her sick in the stomach.

Beatrice wished for them to say they found Subaru; she swore to give him all the hugs she could if he ever came back

Rem was eyeing Julius and Felix, they hurt her hero, and they better fix this or she would personally make sure they never saw the sun again.

Roswaal was... very upset. If Neo wasn't Subaru, then he could only guess that Subaru went into absolute hiding and isolation. And if that happened, he could never accomplish his goals.

Garfeil was surprisingly quiet, he just wanted to hear whether they found his beloved caption or not

Otto was observant noticing the odd expression on Julius' face. It looked pained

Felt wanted to see her hero, the boy who captured her heart.

Julius stood up

"Ok if I may have your attention."

The table was silent

All eyes were at him

"Firstly, yes I found Subaru."

The table erupted

Garfeil was the first to respond

"THEN WHY TA HELL ISN'T MA CAPT'N WITH YA?!"

Julius kept his stern expression spoke again

"About retrieving Subaru... it was a task far too difficult for me alone."

Silence

Crusch spoke

"And why is that greatest knight?"

"Subaru Natsuki has become far more powerful than me... he somehow used six full spirits and learnt martial arts common to that of a shinobi."

Beatrice hearing these words lowered her head in sorrow

"D-did Betty's Subaru replace her? But he promised... he promised to give me happy memory's"

Beatrice let a tear fall

Emilia began to stroke her hair

"Julius-kun, did Subaru say he was contracted?"

"No Emilia-sama"

"Beatrice maybe he just called upon the spirits to help him fight."

Beatrice regained her composure

"Noo! He replaced me for being a bad spirit... and it's what I deserve!" Beatrice began to cry

Roswaal joined
