Damien Sterling masked the turmoil in his eyes, regaining his usual serene demeanor, a stark contrast to the man who had passionately pursued Emma Hart in the bedroom just moments before. 

Upon noticing Mrs. Harris entering, Damien promptly excused himself, leaving the room with an unreadable expression. 

Having exhausted all methods, what else could he possibly do?

Mrs. Harris tenderly cleaned the choked porridge from Emma's mouth, patting her back while tears welled in her eyes. 

"Miss Emma, why do you choose such a path of suffering?" she asked, her voice a blend of frustration and deep concern.

Her words carried a tinge of anger and exasperation, yet they were overshadowed by her overwhelming sympathy and tenderness for Emma.

Unable to utter a word, Emma could only grasp Mrs. Harris's arm, her touch conveying heartfelt thanks.

Mrs. Harris sighed deeply.
