“‘Oh, don’t worry, Kevin,’” Lori continued, her voice full of anger and sarcasm, “‘Your Aunt Cameron would never do anything really wrong. That’s why she’s in prison.’”

“Lori, stop,” Cam turned toward her, “I’m sorry. I know this is hard for you. I wish I had something different I could tell you. I’m sorry you had to open the box but I had to leave them with you. I didn’t want you to worry but I couldn’t let someone else find them. They’re the things I value most. I had to know they were safe.”

“Then you were being blackmailed. You were afraid that someone would steal them from you.”

Lori was grasping at straws, trying to find the explanation.

“No.” Cam began, then changed her mind, “Yes, yes, I was afraid they’d get ripped off.” Let Lori believe something.

But Lori just stared at her. “This is an undercover thing, isn’t it?” she asked. “Please tell me it is. Please trust me, Cameron. Tell me you didn’t do this.”
