After Dexter ate dinner, he said good night to Ratana and went to his room. The others would stay up for a while and play games and talk, but he would stay alone after dinner except for some nights he would play games with Ratana.
He decided to work out for a while, and as usual, none of his stats went up, which was frustrating for him, but it took two years for a minor increase, so it wasn't a big deal. The other kids finally came back and went to sleep quickly. After the donations, they finally had pillows, and they never really needed blankets because the temperature was usually pretty hot.
Dexter finally fell asleep, but in the middle of the night, he heard a loud bang coming from the lobby. He knew that someone had kicked in the door soon after his System gave him a new task.
[Task: Protect the orphanage]
Reward: 300 points, Stealth
This was by far the largest amount of points he'd seen so far from the tasks. He didn't have time to think about the points, though, so he quietly snuck out of the room while signaling the other kids to stay put. There was an old storage room containing some tools to fix various things around the orphanage, so he crept over there.
Dexter couldn't think of any other weapons he could get at the moment since the kitchen was over at the other side of the building. Whoever broke in should be heading to that side anyways after they finish searching the front desk. The old hag most likely has the money in her room, and though he wouldn't mind her passing away, Ratana's room is one before her.
He arrived at the storage closet and stealthily opened it, and found a beaten toolbox. Taking a look inside, the best he could see was a screwdriver and a hammer. Thinking about it, he decided to go with the screwdriver because these men should be armed, so he'd have to rely on Stealth. Dexter could only hope they wouldn't be comfortable with killing kids and would subdue him instead.
The orphanage was a small but two-story building, and he could hear them creeping up the stairs. They must have been whispering to themselves ever since they broke in because Dexter hadn't heard anything but footsteps. He needed to raise his perception; He could only hear the men because the floorboards were old and squeaky. From the sound of things, there were three men.
Arriving at the staircase and creeping up to them, he heard them opening the door before Ratana's but still didn't panic. After all, he had the passive iron will. The top floor had an L layout with four rooms, with the center being the biggest.
Dexter could finally see the three men, one was skinny, and the two others were on the buff side. They were rather large, though at least compared to him. None of them had weapons drawn which could be considered dumb, but they were raiding an orphanage. You needed money to get guns, and the orphanage was almost always dead broke.
The two big men were busy searching inside the room while the small one was guarding outside. He started to creep towards the end of the hallway to peek around the corner but didn't make it far.
Dexter made some noise, and when the man turned around, he leaped on him and stabbed right into his right eye with the screwdriver.
The other two were deep in the room, so he grabbed the man's gun, which was an m1911a1. Making sure everything was ready, Dexter crept towards the door. He knew they heard something, but he still had to take them out anyways. Peeking wide, he was instantly shot at and traded bullets with each other. Dexter's shot went straight into the man's head, but he got him in the arm, causing him to drop his pistol.
Before he could fully recover, the third man was charging out of the room and threw a swing at him with full power. He dodged, and the man's fist smashed through the wall. While the man was bringing his arm out, Dexter kicked him in the balls with all his strength, causing him to cry out in anguish.
Dexter rushed over and grabbed his pistol with his left hand. His arm was still hurting like a bitch, but thanks to Devil's body, the pain was acceptable, and he could keep going. He pointed it at the man who was now recovering, and before he could shoot, he heard a bunch of men storming in behind him. Dexter spotted Dara and Ratana peeking out from their rooms, both their faces filled with shock. They had probably seen everything after the gunshot. He felt happy inside because their first reaction to a gunshot was to protect the children. The only reason they didn't come out earlier was that Dara was losing her hearing, and Ratana was near impossible to wake up.
"I have to say I'm really impressed, boy; although these goons aren't all there, you still took them all on. How about you work for me, and ill put your orphanage under my protection." The man sounded arrogant, and Dexter couldn't trust him, but what else could he do? He sensed ten men, and their weapons were drawn.
"Fine, but if you break your deal ill at least kill half of you," Dexter replied in a confident manner which startled the man.
'Shouldn't this kid be scared or something? He even has a gunshot in his arm; what the hell? This kid got some balls. I like it.' After a minute of silence, he asked.
"Hey kid, what's your name?
"Dexter Murdoch."
First time writing something like this. Let me know what you think. I personally wasn't to happy with it but i'll improve eventually.
