Obstacles

The system was bewildered. It realized that Nevada was misunderstanding something. However, its programmed job was very clear. It needed to assist Nevada walk to his intended path, and one of its objectives was to let him meet his mate.

That’s why even when so much has changed, the system has never actually restricted Nevada’s actions. As long as the world system deemed it okay, and as long as Nevada wasn’t in danger, there was no need to intervene.

Furthermore, Nevada didn’t ask. The alpha also didn't harbor ill intentions toward its host. This meant that this was just another step Nevada had to take to draw closer to his goal. Thus, the system concluded that nothing was wrong.

Nevada had finally finished discussing things with himself, and he turned to Shiloh. However, the mysterious glint in Shiloh’s eyes a few seconds ago was already gone. What Nevada saw was the alpha keenly observing his every movement without even bothering to conceal it.

So, Nevada assumed that Shiloh could be wary of him. He was an outsider after all. If he was the one in his place, he would be the same.

Nevada continued, “I know you said you won’t marry or whatever, but I think your pack has a different opinion.”

“Their opinion means nothing to me when it comes to my personal life,” Shiloh instantly replied with lifted brows.

Nevada fiddled with his clothes. “That must not be right.”

Shiloh tilted his head. “Are you saying that my words—the alpha’s words—aren’t right?”

Nevada blinked innocently.

“But your beta was quite adamant that I should give you an heir.”

The temperature in the room decreased a notch. Shiloh, who was nothing but a relaxed uninvited guest a while ago, suddenly gave him a dark look. The system flashed a big trembling warning sign on his screen.

Nevada ignored it. He was more than ready anyway. Plus, he still had that Free Pass reward he got for unlocking a hidden scene.

He wasn’t exactly just idling in his room the past few days, although he did make sure he appears to be doing so. Inside, he was actually devising plans.

His first option was indeed to stay cozy and warm by using Shiloh’s name. However, if he chooses to claim his title as an alpha’s partner, then he needs to start taking action now.

“If you plan to cause a rift between the leaders of a pack, then attack from the inside, all I can say is that it’s a smart plan,” Shiloh said in a cold voice. “But this plan will be ineffective against ‘my’ pack."

“I know,” Nevada replied, moving to the side to avoid Shiloh who reached out to grab his hand. “That’s why I can’t be lying.”

“Oh? You’re implying that I should believe an omega, who I only met a few days ago, over the beta I grew up with?”

Shiloh’s expression did not look good. The system had also been flashing the same warning sign, with the beeping almost deafening Nevada. Still, he stood his ground.

“In the first place, my dear prideful alpha, what would I gain from deceiving you?” Nevada asked.

Shiloh swiftly stood up and caught his arm. Nevada flinched in surprise but didn’t bother struggling. Doing so would be a waste of precious energy since he knew he was much weaker than him.

However, Shiloh did nothing else aside from pulling him near and whispering to his ear, “A prideful alpha, most probably.”

Nevada scoffed as he met Shiloh’s eyes. He rolled his eyes and heaved a deep breath before trying once to shake his hold away. When he failed, he proceeded to forcibly cross his arms instead.

“I’m not playing around,” he said with a hint of annoyance in his voice.

Shiloh shrugged his shoulders. “Neither am I.”

“What would I get from someone like you?” Nevada incredulously asked, which garnered him a bored look from Shiloh who once again relaxed his squared shoulders.

“That’s the dumbest question I’ve ever heard in my entire life, but I’ll answer it to entertain you.” Shiloh raised his hand and counted with his fingers as he talked. “One, I’m the hottest alpha in these mountains. Two, I’m the hottest wolf, not just in these mountains. And three—”

Nevada slapped his hand down. “Can’t you hold a serious conversation?”

Shiloh’s left eyebrow lifted. “Do I look like I’m kidding?”

Nevada almost wanted to roll over the floor and pull all his hair out. Obviously, this guy wasn’t taking him seriously.

What he wanted wasn’t a rift or whatever between the two of them! He just needed Shiloh to keep that arrogant beta in check! After all, he may not be the instigator of Nevada’s horrible experiences, but he was a jerk who did nothing even though he knew of his sufferings!

Nevada sharply inhaled and sighed loudly. The atmosphere around him was worse than when Shiloh tensed up before.

“If you’re suspecting that all of this may just be some grand scheme to stop or overthrow your pack or whatever, then I’m here to set your mind at ease. My parents were sincere about the words they gave,” he said.

Standing upright and looking to the side, he caught sight of Lowe’s shadow who was quiet just outside with her head down. He almost forgot that this little girl was still here. No, more importantly, there was no door and their conversation could be heard.

“I don’t give a fuck—” Beep! “—about what’s happening back there, but I do give a lot of fucks about what’s happening here. There are no ‘leaders’ in this pack, Alpha. There’s only one.”

Nevada walked to the doorway and held the curtain open without glancing once at the alpha. He could feel Shiloh’s eyes on him, but he didn’t care.

He had no intention of going out there in the meantime. Where all those people, who had done Nevada wrong in the past, were roaming around. Shiloh’s vague actions weren’t enough. He needed to do something that would solidify his position. And if everyone looks up so much to the “alpha’s words,” then that’s what he has to do.

He needed Shiloh to set it in stone.

“Please go on your way and allow me to rest, Alpha. I’m tired,” Nevada said in a heavy tone.

Unless Shiloh took that first step into clearing the obstacles for him, the path to his only two missions in this story will remain uncertain.

Shiloh stepped out with heavy breaths without uttering a single reply to him. The moment the curtain fell from Nevada’s hand, another window flashed on his screen which dizzied him.

Lowe was quick on her feet. She hurriedly held him with both of her frail hands to steady and guide him to his bed. The loud ringing in Nevada’s head finally stopped and what replaced it was the familiar mechanical voice.

Nevada had no time to understand what was going on. All he unconsciously understood was that he heard some good news. However, before he could even process anything, his vision already turned black.
