Vice knew he had to act fast or he'd lose his nerve.
He had to find a time when there was no one in the hallway, and make a run for the first door. If he spent too long second-guessing himself, he'd lose his window of opportunity.
For a house with only two residents, it sure had a veritable army of maids patrolling it. Vice suspected that was Rodrigo's intention all along. From what he understood of the man, he had a sort of antagonistic respect for other men -- which meant he saw them as a threat.
What kind of threat, Vice couldn't clearly identify. A threat to his property? His home and all its contents, including his wife, and formerly, his son? If that was the case, the experience with Vital, would only have soured him on having bodyguards around.
