Secrets and Surprises
Merlin's nonchalance continued as he addressed King Uther. "If that's the case, just let things flow naturally. It's up to Your Majesty to make the final decision."
King Uther, a bit taken aback, retorted, "So you're shirking responsibility?"
Merlin quickly shifted topics, "Your Majesty, I haven't had lunch yet. I'm going to eat now." With that, he vanished in an instant, leaving King Uther in a state of confusion.
The King shook his head, reflecting on his past warnings about trusting Merlin's predictions. Maybe it's not just about women or letters—perhaps Merlin's advice is unreliable altogether.
With a sigh, King Uther reassured himself, "Altria is with Morgan, so the danger is minimal. A little experience won't hurt her." He then focused on his deteriorating health. The ongoing war with Vortigern seemed to be his last major campaign. Despite Merlin's predictions suggesting he might not defeat Vortigern, Uther's ambition was reignited. Perhaps there's still a chance to turn the tide.
Administrative Duties and Surprises
Meanwhile, Lott and Morgan were at the office study, surrounded by piles of documents. Lott, eager to show off, handed Morgan a stack of files. "These are all Orkney's administrative records. Don't let the size fool you; there's a lot to handle every day."
Finally, someone to help me manage all this paperwork! I'm thinking of designing a special uniform for Morgan, something that makes her look like a queen of the workplace, Lott mused excitedly.
Morgan, however, was less impressed by Lott's enthusiasm. She recalled images of "OL uniforms" from her previous studies—a wrap-around skirt and silk stockings. Her face flushed at the memory.
Lott, still daydreaming, thought, Once she's busy with official duties, I can relax and maybe go fishing every day.
Morgan, noticing Lott's distraction, slammed the files onto the table. "Lott!"
Startled, Lott looked up, "What's wrong?"
Morgan, determined, said, "It's nothing. Let's tackle these official affairs together and come to a precise conclusion."
Lott, showing a hint of reluctance, asked, "Can't you handle it alone?"
"No," Morgan replied firmly. Her serious tone made Lott's enthusiasm wane.
Feeling a bit guilty, Morgan softened her stance. "If you help me with these duties, I might offer you some rewards."
"Really!?" Lott perked up immediately.
"Yes, even an OL outfit," Morgan said with a teasing grin.
"Alright, let's get started!" Lott agreed eagerly. He began reviewing the documents but soon wore a puzzled expression. "Wait, how did you know about OL outfits?"
A Surprising Revelation
Lott's mind raced. How could Morgan know about OL uniforms? Could she be a fellow traveller from another world?
Morgan looked puzzled at Lott's reaction. "What are you talking about? I don't understand."
Seeing her confusion, Lott dismissed his thoughts. Even if she is a traveller, it's unlikely she shares my knowledge.
Lott then switched to English, hoping to clarify his thoughts. "Are you familiar with the term 'OL uniform'?"
Morgan's confusion deepened. "Are you referring to slang from your hometown?"
Lott sighed, realizing Morgan likely wasn't familiar with modern concepts. So, she's not from my world.
Morgan, intrigued, decided to let the topic slide for now. She turned her attention back to the documents, focusing on the tasks at hand.
The Reality of Orkney's Finances
As they worked through the paperwork, Morgan observed the financial situation in Orkney. Despite its large ocean area and small landmass, Orkney's wealth was notable. Lott's spending habits were unconventional. Rather than investing in luxurious estates or grandiose projects, he focused on practical development.
Morgan noted, "You've spent a lot on infrastructure—loans for farmers, water conservancy, fisheries, and roads. Isn't it risky not to save any money?"
Lott replied with confidence, "It's fine. The money is meant to circulate and foster prosperity. By investing in the development of agriculture and industry, we'll see greater returns in the future. I'm pioneering economic development in this era."
Morgan marvelled at Lott's vision and commitment to improving the region. Despite the unconventional approach, she recognized the potential benefits of his strategy.
The two continued their work, each with their thoughts and plans, but united in their efforts to manage Orkney's affairs effectively.
