Good night

With dinner done and the store told, she's off to bed. Unfortunately, there's only one bed, but luckily I don’t really need to sleep. I figure I will just watch over her tonight; we are away from the safety of home after all. But with the night setting in, I sit in front of the fireplace, reading over the papers she will need me to feel out as I come across the forms of the other contestants. They all seem to have an impressive array of abilities: enhancement, shifting, and something called the weapon. I should feel out my part, I suppose, but it does make me think back on my long life. Because in retrospect, I can’t explain myself.

Its simple size, power, speed, and even a nice bit of what people could call magic on the surface. But, it goes deeper than that. It’s an enate power to overwhelm anyone who is trying to harm people. As I’m feeling out the form, I come to the name I should give just after the description, and it makes me think. What should I call my power? After I start to come up with my name, I decide to call it “Overpower.” It came to me when I remembered getting my power. I was playing outside at a young age when I see the ball I'm playing with stop moving. I try to make it budge, but it seemed to be stuck. I turn to my mom, but she to was frozen, and I started to panic when I heard.

“Be calm, my child; it will be alright.” I hear in a calm, mothering voice.

I look around in a panic, trying to find the voice source when I see her despite being what I can only describe as an angle, while the wings and all. She seemed so normal. Her face was that of a woman whose hands worked in life. With freckles from the sun and brown hair frizzed from the air, she seemed like she came from our world. Yet she was clothed in pure white robes and a golden plate on her chest. I remember it so vividly despite all these years.

“Who are you? Are you going to hurt me?” I ask as she lands before me.

“No, my child, I'm not here to harm you; in fact, I'm here to offer you a gift.” She tells me in a soothing voice.

Naturally, I was a bit apprehensive, but I calmed down upon hearing her speak to me like this, so I sat down and looked at her.

“What is it then?” I ask with a child-like sense of curiosity.

She kneels and holds out her hand in a downward-facing fist.

“What I'm going to give you in potential, so just tell me what do you want the potential to do.” She asks me with a big smile.

I had never really thought about it, considering I was so young, but I did remember being afraid. Our family was always on the lookout for other people or animals that might hurt us, given that it was just the dawn of humanity. I look at my mom and back at her.

“I want the potential to protect the people I love,” I ask enthusiastically.

She winks and turns her hand around, flashing me with light. I awake, and it’s the next day. It was the strangest day of my life, but I grew to my size and learned how to use the power in the years following. The peculiar thing is that I never had a significant challenge in all those years of society building up. But, with the selective breeding, I may have a run for my money. But then there's her; she can attack me with a sword, and I don’t feel threatened, so my powers don’t turn on.

I don’t know what it is about her that changes me. She makes me want to take on the world, but she is probably the only person in the world who can kill if she wanted. I then flip the page over to see that there is a weakness section. I go back to the other challenger cards, and as I suspected, they didn’t put anything, but I got to admire them for the asking. That just sparked a whole other train of thought because aside from an idea that someone once told me, I don’t really have an exploitable weakness. After that, I see that I'm done with the paperwork. I pack it up and set it aside, stopping, as I often do, to enjoy the moment I'm in. it’s something I've only started doing recently, but it is nice to do when I can.

While I'm in this moment of peace, of true calm, I hear a commotion outside and go to the door. Swinging it open, I look ahead of me to see an owl. But it was next to a large clearing of brush that I know was covered earlier. I step toward the golden owl when she morphs into a tall, elegant woman, clothed in silk robs. She comes at me with her pale skin shimmering in the moonlight.

“What are you doing here?” I ask with anticipation on my breath as I wait to see what she does.

She steps around me, letting her auburn hair down around her shoulders.

“I’m here to convince you to come to be my champion. My older brother is an incompetent fool, and I don’t trust our family's future to him.” She tells me as she runs her hand up my chest.

His actions aren’t new to me; many people try to pull me from Elaina’s side over the years, which shall be no different.

“Go away.” I brush her off and head back inside.

“Fine, but you better be good because this was your last chance.” I hear her say as she flies away

I watch her fly away and walk back in. I take my seat and look over at Eliana and notice she is still asleep. It’s a good thing she didn’t see that nonsense; it would just worry her.
