First Day at Work

As she had expected, her life turned out to be too different as her father got out of the hospital and went back home. Life, as expected, went hard. They were struggling even with the food they had to eat. Some days, they had to miss a meal since the money his father had kept was all spent with the medicine.

The company did send money for the hospital but not the whole therapy process. That night she received a text message from the company's HR. She was asked to go to the Callen's Clothings office.

She arrived at the company's office just before it was open. She got jitters, but she only expected them to give her maybe her father's insurance. The guard led her directly to the human resource office.

She got in the door. The HR manager was a lady that seemed to be as old as her father, had already prepared the paper for her to sign. She was surprised when she read what the paper was about, it was an employment contract.

She gaped in surprise. She was overwhelmed with confusing feelings at the moment. Part of her was happy that since she couldn't go to college, she had work that would be good enough to support her family when his father couldn't do them anymore.

Another part of her was scared. She wasn't sure if she was capable enough to be hired in that big company. She knew it was a clothing company, and they must be producing garments. However, she knew that she didn't even know how to sew. It would also be impossible for them to place them in the office. She was just a high school graduate.

"Mam? May I ask? What kind of work will I be doing?" She stopped hesitating and asked.

"What are you expecting? We know you didn't know anything. Don't dare to expect a position in the office." The HR manager chuckled mockingly.

"NO, no, mam, I didn't. Not in the office, ma'am. Wherever it is you are going to put me, I'll be happy to accept it. Because whatever it is, it's a big help for my family." She bowed her head right after she said it.

The HR manager smiled faintly. She was happy that the girl was responsible enough to think that way.

"Do you want to begin working now or tomorrow?"

"I can begin anytime you want me, ma'am." Lizeth abruptly said she was even excited to work.

Not long after, a man got inside the office.

"This is Mario, he will teach you what you should do around here, and by the way, you will be working as a cleaner."

Lizeth lost for a word, she was expecting a low position, but she wasn't expecting to be a cleaner in the factory. However, it won't matter much to her. Work was still working, and the pay she could get as a cleaner wouldn't differ much as a factory worker.

Besides, even she knew she could learn to sew and could be capable of working in production. She wouldn't impose. She was aware that it wouldn't be easy to find a job these days. So, she was even lucky enough to be hired without applying.

Even she knew that they only hired her for the sake of pity with what happened to her father. She still was grateful for it.

Mario greeted her with a broad smile as he led her to the cleaner's quarter.

"You had to change your clothes with the uniform," she handed her a neatly folded shirt that was still inside a plastic container.

Lizeth did as she had told and followed Mario as he picked up the cleaning tools they had to use. She was assigned to clean the outer hallway of the factory, and she did as he told her without hesitation.

She wasn't expecting to start working at that level, but she wasn't complaining. Lizeth was even grateful. With how hasty things had changed in their life, at least God didn't take long to bring them back the blessing.

She was aware that people usually looked down on you in their society if you were merely a cleaner or a maid. But for her, it was stealing the same job that could bring food to her family's table, so there was nothing wrong with it.

Lizeth made sure to do her work diligently and while she was busy. An elegant-looking girl walked towards her.

She was in her forties, but she looked much younger than the usual people at that age. If only her mother were alive, she probably was also her age, and she sure looked as pretty as this lady. Lizeth felt a little pang in her heart. She suddenly missed her mom.

She didn't realize that she was gazing at the woman in a daze, with a smile as her eyes glistened as a clear liquid formed from it.

With that, the woman caught her attention, and she smiled back, although her brow furrowed, confused with Lizeth's reaction.

"Hello, are you okay?" The woman's voice snapped her out of her daze.

"No, no, mam, I'm fine." Lizeth bowed down. She got a feeling that she was one of the bosses with the way she looked. But even if she were not, she would still do it, to respect everyone in that company.

She had to pay gratitude to everyone from there since it was the same company that they laid upon and depended on for years. It was the source of their family income. Her mom was working in the same company before until she died.

The woman smiled more as she looked back at her. At the same time, she squinted her eyes.

"Wait, are you Luis' daughter?" she asked.

Lizeth didn't know if she had to be surprised that she had guessed it right. Maybe her face didn't go far from her father.

"Yes, mam, I am Lizeth, his eldest daughter. Office personnel asked me to be here and offered me a job," she replied with a calm face.

"Yes, I know that. I was the one who told them to do it. But, I wasn't expecting them to give you this kind of job." She snapped, her friendly, elegant face abruptly changed into a scary and furious mood.

Lizeth couldn't hide it, her impression of the woman changed in an instant, she knew she was not someone to be messed up with, and by the sound of it, she seemingly was the boss.

Without uttering another word, she paced away from her and headed straight to the HR office. Lizeth continued what she was doing when suddenly she heard two people call her name. She looked around to see Mario and another woman on their way to her. They looked pale, like having an expression of being in trouble and in hurry.
