“Yes, Mother,” Bob said. He turned to Dave and winked. “Dave, remember—it’s cards first, carouse later.”
At the sound of the doorbell, a flight of butterflies had taken off in Dave’s stomach. He tried to calm himself. Lee had been reticent to join in with the evening’s plan of romping with the young otters. Would Dave’s altered appearance now hinder something that could have developed between him and Lee?
Dave could hear Nick chatting with Lee as they walked through the house to the dining room. Dave took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. When Lee entered the room, Dave’s mouth dropped in astonishment. He hoped he hadn’t audibly gasped. The man he’d gotten reacquainted with last night had been replaced by a younger version of himself. Like Dave, Lee was now thirty or so years younger. His salt and pepper hair was jet black, causing his blue eyes to be even more prominent. He was wearing shorts and a tee-shirt, both of which displayed his youthful physique beautifully.
