"On a date?" Luliyah looked at Kelvin in surprise, thinking that she heard wrong. She was lucky she didn't spill the tea in her hand.
"What should we do tomorrow?" Kelvin asked, ignoring Luliyah who was still confused. He was already thinking of their date.
Luliyah's face looked serious as she was thinking of something. She didn't know what to do when going on a date. She doesn't have an experience of dating. Shouldn't this be the man's job? It was always the men who decided where they'd go on a date.
"I have no dating experience. How about we take a walk by the lake? I've never seen the lake in the back yard." Luliyah said.
She didn't know what to suggest. They couldn't go shopping and they couldn't go to the cinema either because Kelvin couldn't see. Then what could they do?
Kelvin frowned. It was clear that he was dissatisfied with Luliyah's suggestion. He was not interested in taking a walk by the lake side. Is it even a date if they didn't come out of the house?
There was silence between them, as they both thought of ideas for their date.
The wind suddenly blew into the study. Luliyah felt the wind had a faint floral fragrance. Because of her sensitive smell, she could recognize the flowers. Luliyah's eyes lit up.
"Do you smell the Marigold flower? Should we go pick flowers tomorrow? After that I will make Marigold cake for you." Luliyah said excitedly.
Every year, Luliyah would pick Marigold flowers and make them into various kinds snacks to sell. Marigold tea, jelly, jam, cake and sweets.
Kelvin smiled when he heard Luliyah's plan. It didn't matter what they did, at least they would get out of the house. Luliyah would also make a cake for him, how could he refuse?
"Alright, tomorrow we will pick flowers." Kelvin replied.
While they were chatting, someone knocked on the day. Kelvin told the person to come in, because he knew that it was Harris.
Harris entered the study, holding two ointments. One was the ointment Kelvin used and the other is the one Harris purchased from a pharmacy.
"Sir, I have brought your ointment." Harris said. He felt a little doubtful because Luliyah was there.
"It's okay, just on on." Kelvin didn't mind if Luliyah listened to their discussions. After all, it isn't something that should be kept a secret.
Harris put the two drugs on the table. The ointments were the same color, so it was difficult to tell them apart at a glance. They also couldn't see the ingredients.
"What's with these two drugs?" Luliyah asked.
"Mr Kelvin wants to know if there is a difference between the two drugs. We have to be careful because someone just killed the doctor recently." Harris explained to Luliyah.
Hearing his explanation, Luliyah nodded. The person who intended to harm Kelvin, must have poisoned the drugs the doctor left behind.
The three of them looked at the drugs, but they didn't see any difference.
Luliyah couldn't tell the difference between the two drugs by looking, but maybe she could tell by perceiving the drugs. She took the two ointments and perceived the aroma in turns.
Harris asked when he saw Luliyah do that, "Madame, can you tell the difference?"
Luliyah bit her lower lip and hesitated for a moment, "I don't know if I can tell the difference. But maybe I can try with my nose." She brought the ointment close to her nose and perceived the drugs again.
She felt the two drugs were the same, 'There was no significant difference....'
Seeing Luliyah's confused face, Harris asked anxiously. "How is it, Madame?"
"It smells the same, but the new ointment has a stronger smell. Or maybe it's because the other medicine is old and has lost it's function and smell." Her face looked suspicious as she continued to perceive the drugs to be sure.
When Harris was about to ask again, Kelvin waved his hand, trying to inform him not to disturb Luliyah and let her do her job.
After a while, Luliyah tilted her head. "There is something wrong. The new ointment has a different smell and very strong."
She knew there was a difference between the two, but she couldn't remember what scents they were.
"Are you sure?" Kelvin asked, looking at her.
"I really perceived it. There is a difference and I'm very sure about it." Luliyah said with confidence.
'What is this smell?'
Seeing Luliyah' frustrated face, Kelvin sighed. "Never mind, forget it. We better have dinner first." He said, rising to his feet.
Luliyah followed him out of the study room, still staring at the two ointments on the table. Even when she closed the door, her eyes could not escape from the drugs.
....
At the dining table, Mrs Binta prepared several dishes for them. Luliyah didn't have to chance to assist her in the kitchen because she was with Kelvin.
As soon as she sat at the dining table, she saw one of the servants approach Kelvin and gave him a wet towel to clean his hands. Luliyah frowned when she saw that. Every day, the servants cleaned the house until it was shiny.
'Is this house dusty?' Luliyah asked herself.
Luliyah held her hand and felt the dust on her fingernails. She perceived her finger and looked very surprised, 'The same smell!'
She immediately got up from her chair, which made everyone look at her in shock.
However, Luliyah didn't care. She left the table and ran upstairs.
She hurried towards the stairs. She doesn't touch the wall when is climbing the stairs, so she must have done it today without realizing it. In fact, she could she finger marks on the wall.
She place her hand on the wall and white powder from the paint stuck to her palm.
She quickly went to the study room and took the two ointments to compare. She perceived Kelvin's ointment and perceived the white powder. She found out that, they both had the same smell.
Kelvin, Harris and Mrs Binta followed Luliyah to the second floor. They saw that Luliyah was pensive and noticed the white powder on her hand.
"This.. This smells the same." Luliyah mumbled.
Luliyah is a student majoring in chemistry. Of course, she had a sensitive smell and understood chemicals. The white powder on her hand was a paint chemical. If the substance got into Kelvin's eyes, his eyes would be completely damaged.
"Harris, check the drug. Find out if there are other chemicals in it!" Kelvin ordered.
It turned out that someone really wanted to harm him.
Mrs Binta felt angry. She heard all the stories from the Harris. "That person not only killed your doctor, but deliberately added dangerous chemicals to your medicine. How outrageous!"
Fortunately, Kelvin didn't get to use the drug. He was saved because Luliyah was able to tell the difference between the two drugs.
Otherwise, who knew what would have happened?
