Mark could speak Korean very easily, but he had that strange and very heavy accent, which Hyejin found very cute, but it was really funny to hear him pronounce some words in the most random and strange way possible.
She had a good time listening to him trying to say some things.
Hyejin was very interested in what Mark had to say about Eunji, in theory it was an easy case, but since everything seemed to be still very hidden, she or the family hadn't said much about anything.
Don't talk about the scandal involving one of the older sons, don't talk about who will take over the company and much less talk about what old Kim will do from now on. Retirement!? Who knows.
She would need to use her contacts to find out everything she needed. She took a sip of coffee and just smiled. More information is good, give me all you have.
"That's good, tell me more about..."
"The second generation is only made up of Mr. Kim Sung-a and his wife and Kim Do-Yun who was adopted when they were both older... They had money, but they didn't leave anything to Doyun and he needed help from his father-in-law to build the empire he has today... But nothing that he didn't repay, we're talking about Nam Woo-jin, they must have several agreements involving construction bids and mining permits, one helps the other... So we consider that there are only two generations, Donyun's and the second are the children..."
Kim Eunji had no interest in knowing about Doyun's parents, but knowing that he had family ties with Nam Woojin was slightly terrifying, she had worked there a few times. Not many, just a few.
"Well, in theory the Kim family has five heirs, but the four oldest children are adopted and are all between 25 and 30 years old, but only Donghae has shown any interest in the family business. The target this time is the youngest daughter who, curiously, is also the only biological daughter... Kim Eunji has just finished her degree in Management Economics and Strategy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)..."
The more Mark spoke, the more he revealed his European identity and more specifically that he was German, or at least lived with Germans or had strong German ancestry in the family.
Well. That was good to know, at the end of the day Mark sometimes seemed to be just a voice and that was a little boring.
She listened attentively as she ate her salad.
She particularly liked slow and leisurely bites, there is no reason to rush when it comes to food. Eat well, that's what her aunt always told her.
But there are five children, the youngest is the something and who is the client?! "Which one is the client?"
"Kim Dong-hae is the second oldest son, Kim Hyunsoo, he is 30 years old and served in the army right after he left high school, so he left the army and soon after got a place in medical school at the Seoul National University College of Medicine, having no problems or difficulties, but he also never seemed to stand out much compared to the other students..."
Hyejin nodded, the eldest son is the average son. He is not brilliant, but he is independent enough not to need anyone's help. It shouldn't be a problem in the plans she had for Eunji.
Mark continued speaking.
"...Well, according to the records, the eldest son is a doctor and has never been interested in the family business. He studied medicine and works at an important hospital. All I can find that involves him is the adoption of two cats and some houses that he seems to have put up for rent... The second son is Kim Donghae, and I don't need to say much about him, but there isn't much information here, perhaps because he is being investigated by the courts. I can only say for sure that, unlike his other brothers, he was adopted when he was four years old, and all the others were adopted when they were still newborns... I don't have any information about this, so I'll work on finding out... He became an engineer at Hanyang University, with honors and merits, but he hasn't served in the army yet..."
This made Hyejin have a slight mental snap. So if he wasn't the oldest, but he was the only one who hadn't been adopted as a newborn... It doesn't make sense. "How long after Hyunsoo was born was Donghae adopted?"
"Only three, in theory he's the oldest, but they consider the oldest and youngest according to their time in the family... Kim Doyun explained this in the last interview he gave in the middle of a charity auction for a local orphanage..."
Take a sip of coffee, this sounds interesting.
"... Wait... What's so special about this orphanage..." She said a little puzzled.
Mark just scratched his head, in theory there was nothing special... "All I can find is some news that Doyun bought the bid for the place and refused the demolition and became the owner of an institution that helps maintain the place and take care of the children."
Hyejin wasn't satisfied, but it was clear that Mark wouldn't find anything interesting, so she could look for more information herself at another time.
"I see, continue..."
"Okay... The second daughter is Kim Nari and she got involved in some drug scandals and magically disappeared, she started studying and working in some countries in Europe... She last lived in Switzerland and then went to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates... Well, she lives or lived, the most recent records are from a few months ago, so I don't know if she's still there."
Dubai is a great refuge to live humbly, Hye-jin thought, but a drug addict going there is at least curious. "This family is overflowing with money."
"Yes, Eun-ji had a wealthy childhood and studied at the best private school in the country. She also speaks three languages fluently and everything she's done seems to be close to perfection, she has a great resume..."
"Did she graduate before the others?"
"No, she graduated six months after her class in which she was enrolled... But it doesn't say why it took so long to graduate, it just says it was for health reasons. But from what the files say, she worked for about a month in a lower management position at a branch in London, after the incident with her brother, the family promoted her... Simply to president and she moved permanently to Seoul... I think the official announcement should be this week."
Hyejin sighed, the salad was delicious, but all good things seemed to last a short time. Just like the peace and quiet life.
Eunji would be a difficult target. Young, intelligent and the sole heir to an empire.
Slightly regretting it now, Hyejin felt that she should have charged a higher price for the service.
The amount of time she will spend just figuring out what to do and how to do it should be what she will receive for the entire service.
Never mind, water under the bridge."Good. Anything interesting about her?"
"I don't find any of this interesting... But she's living in a hotel room, but there's an apartment that's being renovated a few kilometers from where you are and that belongs to her, it's in her name. But both the hotel and the apartment are perhaps the worst places after the Kim building, they're all buildings owned by the same people, so she's in an environment controlled by the family and must have a very strong security system. But it's not impossible to get in."
Attacking in the target's house isn't very smart, there are always other ways to kill someone, but in the person's house any sign can point to you as the murderer, it ends up being tedious and laborious to cover up the evidence and possible witnesses.
Hyejin believed that the best ways were still accidents and places off the target's conventional route, but since she used her well-known marked bullets, it became impossible to use accidents as a viable possibility as the main plan.
Only if an accident was the client's wish, sometimes some clients want it to be a message... I killed someone, be careful what you do and who you mess with.
A death should speak louder than a thousand words, right?!
"Okay Mark, you helped me a little... I should find out the rest by watching her. Now I want you to try to access the Kim's building system and find the president's schedule... There should be a digital copy on the secretary's computer. Go through the files. We need something else... Also, find the service hours and the entry and exit of outsourced companies in the security system, such as cleaning services, maintenance... If we find out the next visit date, we might have a chance to tap the phone or put some bugs in the room... I'll try my luck."
"Sure."
While she was talking to Mark, she could see children running around and the old ladies talking and laughing. Wasn't it too early for all that excitement?! Shouldn't the children be at school too!?
She sighed.
She liked children, but far from her.
Hyejin even saw some domestic animals running around the lawn. The place had some fences, so animals were allowed to go and play without having to be restrained.
She was there looking at the huge building, what good can you do when a building is that size?! Hyejin didn't have eagle eyes, it was impossible for her to observe anything inside.
And despite pretending not to notice, she had noticed a woman approaching, initially she just felt bored, she didn't want to talk to anyone, but the woman first bowed so much that it seemed impossible to deny her anything.
"Young lady, help me..."
"Of course ma'am, what do you need help with?"
The woman pointed to a huge tree facing the front of the Kim family building. It would be a great vantage point and the opportunity to climb up to the top made Hyejin thank the heavens for sending that kind little lady.
It was the almost perfect chance to get closer without attracting too many looks and this opportunity appeared as a divine blessing. "My cat climbed that tree, can you catch him? He's so scared, two people tried, but he's afraid of men..."
"Cat? I'll go see how he's doing..."
Well, Hyejin wasn't interested in a cat, she just wanted to be able to see the building from a different angle.
She was in good physical shape and had no trouble climbing a tree. Maybe a few scratches, but nothing that would keep her a night's sleep.
As she climbed a few branches she soon saw a disdainful cat staring at her, you're just a cat, why are you causing so much trouble?! It doesn't matter.
Hye-jin ignored him and took the opportunity to climb a little higher... From where she was, it was possible to see what was on some floors, it's not like she could have some bionic eyes, but she could see that some looked like large warehouses and others even seemed to be empty.
It was very early, maybe they weren't working yet. But it wasn't that early for someone who needed money...
Underneath the tree, there was some kind of movement by the security guards. It was unacceptable to have people climbing trees in front of the company building. They seemed to be paying attention to every movement in the park and were now preparing to act.
That building was secured with iron and fire, it was clear that she would have a lot of problems if she decided to attack there.
But it's also curious that there were so many security guards in a park. We're talking about a place where ladies go to practice meditation and dogs go to urinate and defecate.
A male voice came up. "Miss, climbing trees in the park is not allowed. I ask that you come down immediately."
Hyejin just rolled her eyes and looked at the cat a step away.
I understand you, I would also stay here with so many annoying people around me.
She looked down and smiled. The guard seemed ready to cut down the tree with her there if necessary.
It's a tree, just calm down, I'm saving lives!
Well, a cat, but it's still a living thing, right?!
The guard insisted. "Please, I won't say it a third time."
Hyejin listened to the restless man and quickly understood the situation. It would be a fun hunt for Eun-ji's neck.
She used her best acting ability and lied through her teeth.
Finally, she grabbed the lazy cat who was caught completely off guard and let out a dissatisfied cry as he was dragged down the tree. "I'm coming… Done."
The feline seemed pleased to hug someone he knew after Hyejin's little sneak attack, and the lady looked so happy she could cry to have that little monster in her arms again.
Hyejin smiled happily at the cat and the confused look on the security guard's face who had called her.
The man looked confused at what was happening, he only saw that Hyejin had climbed the tree, she didn't know there was a cat there... Which made him a little embarrassed, if he had known he would have been more patient. "A cat?!"
The lady bowed in thanks once more and quickly left. "Thank you, young lady."
The cat looked back almost as if asking for help... This woman's love suffocated me.
With the best smile Hyejin had, she lied, she lied shamelessly. Who cares about cats?! Apparently she does care from now on.
"Sorry for causing trouble." Hye-jin didn't really care about attracting attention, but that unusual situation made her have many ideas on how to approach the target, but maybe in the future she should buy cat food to thank the lazy little feline.
The man scratched the back of his neck and just nodded. The girl was pretty and had saved the cat... Beautiful and cute. "It's okay..."
Finally she watched the security guard walk away and she calmly went back to the bench and picked up the egg salad again that was now cold. But the coffee was still good, even though there wasn't much left, despite having ordered the largest size as usual, she had almost finished drinking it.
She calmly spoke while hiding her mouth with the salad container. "Did you hear that?"
Mark appeared from beyond, they used to be on the phone all the time, even if there was nothing to talk about, stay so that more people could hear what was going on around them. "Yes, do you want me to look into the park too?"
"Yes. Find something we can take advantage of."
"Right..."
Yeah... Maybe the Kim family seemed more promising than she could have imagined.
Hyejin continued to calmly observe the building where Eunji worked and the hours were passing quickly enough for her to notice that the security guards were starting to look at her.
She needed to get out of there or at least find a good disguise. Pretend to wake up or something.
Cry, maybe if they think you were fighting with your boyfriend they'll have some compassion...
Luckily Hyejin was lying on the grass so all options were easy and lazily she touched her cell phone and although she was there just to observe the next person she should kill... It's true that that park was really a nice place to take a nap, the weather was still nice and cool.
There was a lot of wind and lots of trees. It really did look nice.
With the light breeze blowing against her face she could feel the drowsiness slowly taking over her body, she had to leave, but now she was lazy and sleepy. "Mark…"
The assassin calmly thought about all the details she had heard some time ago, but something was bothering her a lot. The math didn't seem to add up, Mark mentioned 4 children, but Eunji is the youngest of 5 children.
Where's the other one?!
"Yes?"
Mark seemed surprised by the call, they had been in a huge silence for a long time, so he thought maybe she was too busy reading or doing something that assassins did... Who knows.
But even with the silence it was possible to hear him frantically typing something on his keyboard, but he suddenly stopped when he heard his name being called. "The Kims have 5 children, but you only mentioned 4, what about the other one?"
A brief silence was present, it really didn't make sense, but Mark didn't have an answer to that question. "Yeah... I don't have any information about him, not even a name, there is a record of adoption of a boy, but I don't have anything beyond that..."
Hyejin, who was lying on the grass, finally sat up. "Really?"
Pretend to do something normal people do.
Mark looked thoughtful on the other end of the line. It didn't make any sense, right?! Weird. "Yeah, that's a little weird, it seems like it was done on purpose..."
Hyejin couldn't help but feel a little worried, could this be a problem in the future?! Maybe. Her instincts weren't usually wrong and she didn't think it could be good.
"Search the police system... Police officers who are similar in age."
Mark understood Jeon's concern, but they didn't have any information about the fifth Kim, they were almost looking for a ghost.
"It's not a good sign, but I don't know... Police? Would you be that unlucky?!"
Hye-jin let out a short sigh and lazily started to get up from the floor.
She stretched her arms and legs, feeling her muscles release the tension. It had been a fun morning.
"Whatever, but keep looking for him, if this person exists he'll have some record... It's impossible just disappear."
Mark agreed. He just listened to what Hye-jin said, but it was still fun to play spy from time to time.
Hye-jin observed the surroundings and half a dozen security guards inside the park watched her from a distance. What the hell were they so sure about? Was it all for Eun-ji?
"I'll do it... What's the plan?"
"I've already spent a lot of time here in the park and if I stay any longer they'll get suspicious... I think I'll take one of the cars and park nearby... Tomorrow, today I'm going home to sleep..."
Hye-jin was already walking along the sidewalk looking for the nearest bus stop and the further away from the park she got the less she felt she was being watched. Really interesting.
