IN BRAZIL
"I have already prepared my bags for the flight." I said while putting on my uniform.
"Can't you settle down and think of how your decision is going to affect your mother?" Said theresa while packing my hair in a bun.
"No, besides she's okay with my decision to join the military, its no big deal." I slipped my phone into my pocket and dragged along my luggage. It was a small green army box. I wasn't going to need lots of clothes or shoes, so its simply filled with underwear, night wears, and toiletries. Jamila drove me to the airport. We definitely didn't talk through out the ride to the airport. I guess she was angry at me for taking hard decisions all by myself. She was way older than me and Theresa always supported me but not this time.
The car came to a stop and then i realised how much mom was going to miss me. I came down from the car and she also did. She opened the car bunnet and helped me with my small box. I was about to join the queue but she held my hands and pulled me for a hug.
"Don't die please... She said and sobbed. Please come back, there is still time to change your mind." I hugged her back and gave her a pat on her back.
"I won't die and I'm definitely coming back alive." I said and smiled. Before withdrawing from the hug I told her to tell mom, sorry for leaving her. I couldn't bare to see her cry. After all of this years I knew she had a bit of resentment in her heart, she resented me because I couldn't show her that she was not a loser and she wasn't what her sisters claimed her to be. I couldn't face her for years after she got released from prison, I couldn't live with her cause I feared she would hate me like my dad did, she would blame me and hate me forever, but still she loved me as a mother should love her child. I spent my high-school breaks in her new apartment she got after she got released. She had sold my childhood home. All the bad memories were gone physically but there to claim me mentally. Even tho I didn't spend enough time with her I she still loved me. OH what a mother I had. Beautiful and understanding. She had protected me even tho she was an eye witness. She saw me kill my father with the gun giving to me by jamila but she lied, she took the blame and protected me, jamila and Theresa by saying she stole the gun from their home. I had told her I wanted to Join the military after I completed my studies in the police College and she wished me farewell and gave me her blessings.
I joined the queue and showed the coordinator my identification card. I saw other soldiers with perhaps their loved ones. Some were kissing and hugging while others were talking and shaking hands. After several minutes of waiting in the line it was finally my turn to sign the document given to me. The document was all about how salaries Were being payed in the military. It says if soldier dies salary goes to the family. They were different planes for different squads. I was in the sixth squad witg several members. I got into the plane and sat down close to a lady, she drilled but probably didn't notice cause She was fast asleep. After people got settled the captain announced when the planes would takeoff. We all settled down, waiting for the takeoff. I was kind of scared since I had never taken off in a plane without mom. She was always there to hold hands when The flight was about to take off. Since she wasn't with me I closed my eyes tightly and squeezed my hands tightly until it took off.
Brazil to Russia was a twelve hours flight. I slept several times hoping we were there already and got hungry after few hours. The food given to the people on the plane was sloppy and disgusting I didnt regain appetite after a taste of that food so I had to sleep with an empty tummy. After several hours the captain announced the plane landing and that cleary meant we had already reached our destination, russia. I was really excited to be in Russia. I had watched movies and read books that talked about their war Powe and sovereignty. I walked through campus with lights shone upon my squad mates. I really wished jamila was here because she really enjoyed listening to Russians talk. According to her their accent was mesmerizing. We were checked in and shown to our halls by a sergeant. I Watched as how my squad members fought for bedspace in rooms. They all had different nationality, all from different countries and here for training.
"This would be fun." I said mad cracked my knuckles.
