"Hailey sweetheart, you need to let him go, if you want the paramedics to attend help him." I touched Hailey's shoulder as I tried lifting her off the floor, where she was still holding her friend, who laid unconscious on the floor, his head resting on her lap, as she cradles him.
Lifting red puffy eyes to look at me, "he can't be dead Adian, he can't be dead." Hailey cries.
Her dress even though it is dark colored, is soaked.
Frowning, all of that blood can't be from her friend?
Stooping on the floor beside her, "Hailey sweetheart, are you hurt?" I asked, moving my hands alongside her shoulder, the one she held when she tried moving earlier.
Shaking her head, "no Amos is hurt and we have to help him." Hailey cried, touching her shoulder.
Ger was beside me in an instant, walking behind Hailey to kneel and inspect her shoulder.
His eyes widen in shock and I had to swallow deeply as fear gripped me, his silence confirming my worst.
"Release your friend and let another paramedic attend to you," Ger was already loosening her hold on her friend as a paramedic took over.
"We need another paramedic to attend to her," Ger instructed the paramedic attending to Hailey's friend. "She's been hit," I sense it but hearing the words out of my friends mouth pierced through my chest.
Staring at Ger and I in a daze, "what?" Hailey asked, her voice slurring softly.
She tried to move away from Ger, but cried out in pain, as she shifted her shoulder. "I fell and hurt my shoulder," Hailey informed Ger, when the paramedic came over.
"Then lets attend to your shoulder," a paramedic say softly as he tries coaxing Hailey to co-operate with him.
Pointing at her friend, "is he alive?" She cries, in my arms and looked over to the other paramedic, whose working on Hailey's friend, Amos.
"Yes, he's alive," I assured her.
Frowning in disbelief, "how do you know?" She asks, then turns to the paramedic whose pushing aside the sleeve of her dress to inspect the wound.
"Is Amos going to be okay?" Hailey asks the paramedic whose. attending to her.
The paramedic looks over to where two paramedics were working on Amos and nods at Hailey.
"He's alive and they are working on keeping him alive, just as you need to let me help you, with your injuries." The paramedic, staring at Hailey, with a soft caring smile.
Hailey stretches out a hand towards me but her eyes were closing, against her will.
"She's lost a lot of blood," the paramedic says over his shoulder. "She's going into shock!" He shouts as Ger and I were pushed aside for two additional paramedics to assist.
I sat unmovable on the sidewalk staring at the paramedics work on my, unconscious wife.
I didn't have to look up to know the hand on my shoulder was dads.
She was so busy concentrating on helping her friend Amos, that she ignored her own injury.
"F**k" I muttered, turning tearfilled eyes at dad. "This cannot be happening." I said as cops approached us, along with men in suits.
The paramedics were already moving Hailey's friend into an ambulance, while three others worked on Hailey, who hadn't moved since she slipping into unconsciousness.
"Mr. Knights," a cop in suit approached dad, "I'm detective Simmions, I would like to ask you a few questions, if I may," the detective requested from dad.
Lifting a hand to stop him, "not right now, I can't think clearly until I know my daughter-in-law's fine." Dad responded, nodding to Ger.
Ger approached the detective and introduced himself while walking away, leaving me sitting on the sidewalk and dad stooping beside me.
"God, I can't believe your mother did this," dad whispers softly.
I was too distraught to say it but the thought was at the back of my head.
That f**king bitch tried to kill my wife!
This is taking greed way to far and I'll never forgive her for this!
I finally looked around and saw shattered glass all over the sidewalk and a yellow tape was already blocking pedestrians from walking this way.
"Was anyone hurt during the shootout?" I asked concerned that we might have hit innocent people, while defending ourselves.
Shaking his head, "I don't know." Dad admitted, so the possibility exists that there could've been other casualities.
I move to stand when an unconscious Hailey was being moved to a stretcher.
"I'm going with you." I told the paramedic who hesitated. "I'm her husband," I clarified because there's not f**king way, they're refusing me.
Nodding, "this way," I was directed to follow them to a second ambulance but as I stood and looked around, there were other ambulances and paramedics to the back of us and in the direction, where Ger and I were aiming.
In a daze, I held my unconscious wife's hand and stare into her pale face.
Lifting my eyes to the monitors she was hookup to, "tell me what's going on." I requested, controlling my emotions.
"She's lost a lot of blood and her pressure's dropping. The bullet is logged into her shoulder so she'll be going into surgery as soon as we get to the hospital." A paramedic explains.
As grateful as I am to get an update, I was f**king mad that, this happened.
She got hurt during my watch!
Both Hailey and my hands are covered with blood but I lift her hand to my lips, before leaning down to kiss her forehead.
"Baby, please be okay, please..." I finally give in to the tears I fought on the sidewalk while watching the paramedics attend to my wife.
I lost my child, I can't afford to lose my wife.
"I'm here," I whispered as the ambulance sped through the busy streets. "Squeeze my hand and let me know you're okay." I told her but she didn't respond.
