Paxton opened his eyes to and saw nothing but an endless blue, he looked down to find sand and…fins? His legs were blue and green with scales going up the sides, while on both ankles were a set of two small fins. His feet were webbed like a frog and so were his hands. Not only were his arms and legs not human, but they were also tiny. It was as if he were inhabiting the body of a toddler. Paxton started to breathe faster as his confusion set in, but he quickly realized he was underwater. Instead of choking, lungs accepted the water every time he inhaled.
'Where am I, and what happened to me'? The newly self discovered fish boy mused.
Just when he thought his situation could not get any stranger, he noticed that there was a tiny circle with a trident symbol in the corner of his vision. As soon as he looked at it the symbol turned into a full screen of information. From top to bottom the screen read:
Name- UNDECIDED, LVL 1
Class- Merrow
Essence- 10,000
HP- 10/10
MP- 10/10
Strength- 1/10
Agility- 2/10
Intelligence-4/10
Skills- NONE
Access Training Video- 1/1
Paxton's face scrunched up in confusion as he looked at the symbols in front of his face, they were not English, but somehow, he understood them. Setting his current circumstance aside, Paxton set his eyes onto the tab titled Access Training Video, when he did, a figure stood in front of him. The figure was more like a hologram and was dressed in a violet robe with a mask resembling a dolphin covering his face. The mask reminded Paxton of a badly made movie prop, but the figure gave off an aura of seriousness that could be felt even though they were not present.
"Hello, I do not know who I am talking to as I am most likely long since deceased. You will come to know me as a guide of sorts, my purpose being to help you grow on your journey that is soon going to unfold, as such you can call me Yam".
'My journey?' Paxton did not know what this person was talking about, as of a few moments ago he had thought his life was over.
Yam paused for a moment before continuing, "Now then, I am perfectly aware of your current situation. You have been chosen for a reason that is beyond my understanding. At this point I am sure you are very confused at your current state, being resurrected doesn't occur every day now does it"?
"He Knows?!" Paxton exclaimed aloud. If this Yam person knew that Paxton had died once before, what else did he know?
"This has probably all been a very jarring experience for you, and while I empathize, I must explain a few things and I need you to listen closely." Yam had gotten even more serious which did not seem possible, but Paxton began listening close as he was instructed.
"Right now, if you were to bring up your new system menu, it would display a few words and corresponding numbers that relate to you. You will also note that your name is not specified, as this is a new life, you should not be tethered to your old identity if you do not wish to. After our exchange, you will be granted the freedom to give yourself any name you see fit, stand strong in your decision as you will only be given this opportunity once." Yam explained everything in a calm and concise manner as Paxton took in every word of his new virtual friend.
"Moving on, you should see that you have Essence, this is crucial to your survival. Essence is the life force of living beings in this world. The stronger your foe is, the larger amount of Essence it will contain, which you can absorb upon its defeat. At this moment, you have my Essence along with my nine comrades which will last for a while but not forever. While Essence will keep you alive, it will run out eventually. How long an essence will last will depend entirely on the level of intelligence a living being possesses." Yam paused to let Paxton take in this new extensive amount of information.
"For example, the Essence of a simple fish will be exceptionally low, around ten minutes' worth of energy at most. Now if you take someone like me who has an extensive level of intelligence in the same situation, then my Essence would grant you with around a week of energy. Given that fact, you now have at most ten weeks until you need to start absorbing Essence from other creatures. Also, if you are worried about having your Essence stolen from you, have no fear this is an ability that only someone of your race can possess." Yam chuckled to himself as if looking back on some long-forgotten memory.
"Speaking of race, you are by now noticing some key traits in your physiology. As for what you are, the term is Merrow, or a fish person. You can survive indefinitely under water; you move faster and have more strength under water as well. Your body is covered in a smooth scaly exterior with webbed feet and hands to propel yourself through the water. You should note that you are the only one of your kind and that there will never be another like you. While that sounds intimidating at first, it should be looked at as a gift." Yam continued in a softer tone on that last part.
"Now for the other things on your display, strength can be increased by spending Essence which you need to survive but can use to become stronger as well. To gain Essence you need only to defeat various creatures in combat and level up. To increase your level, you must first max out all your stats. Agility is how fast you can move. Intelligence is how fast you can think and memory performance. MP is how many Magic Points you have, which will increase as you increase your Intelligence. Hp is how much damage you can take until you die, as you do have Essence, it does not make you invincible." Yam said, starting to look around nervously as a sudden bang in the distance was heard.
"Continuing on, Skills can be gained at random or will be rewarded by completing challenges given by the system. This system was created with one goal in mind, revenge. We ask that you go out into this new world and make its inhabitants remember the Merrow race as it was once was, a race to be feared and respected. In return you will be granted near unlimited power and the world will be yours to shape how you wish. Now go, become as strong as you can before the Essence runs out so that you can survive, when you reach higher levels, I will return to you in another video, good luck young one." Yam concluded with a smile and was gone just like that.
