What the hell!!

A huge butterfly or what seemed like a butterfly, about 40 cm wide flew past Kiara, jolting her awake.

"holy f#%k, what's that? "

Kiara and others could see a few butterflies like insects fly around the area. Their size was utterly disturbing. The only thought that came across her mind was the size of mosquitoes. How big would they be!

The sun was on the horizon. After spending about 25 hours, finally, it was evening. Her bad feeling that she was not voicing seemed true. They were not on Earth anymore.

The Flora and fauna was something she had never seen before or had any knowledge. Daylight time was too long. There was this unsettling celestial object in the sky, too huge than the moon, venus or Jupiter, or whatever planets are visible from the sky.

Arav and other guys had come back from their scouting. He gathered everyone around the bonfire and told them about their situation. Everyone had a grim look on their faces. A lot of people died. There were people who required immediate medical attention. But their chances of getting rescued were slim. They cannot communicate to get outside help. And the place they were in looked like an isolated island.

"It's going to be a very long night. And we are in the jungle. It means there would be wild animals. We would be safe as long as we stay vigilant. And we all need to help each other. Guys, you can't stay still doing nothing", Arav said in a very serious tone, directing his gaze towards few individuals who were not cooperating despite being in good health.

After his speech, and getting a raincheck, others not so cooperative people started helping. They built few traps and surrounded their campsite with them. They made improvised weapons which they carried for individual safety.

The people who were not doing anything were a lot more than ones doing. All the air hostess that survived, were working and helping others under the leadership of Julia, who had a perfectly sane head even after this traumatic incident.

The astonishingly good looking Korean boys were hopeless. Was it because of the language barrier or they were too shocked? It was hard to say. After that speech, an average looking and older Korean guy, started to help around. Rest three out of the four younger boys, moved around at least to make a place for their sleeping.

Another group of youths comprising of mostly British started to move around as well. They looked obscenely rich. One could guess that they had never even boiled water for themselves. Out of them, a tall handsome guy was berating his girlfriend who couldn't help but cry insolently.

"Cindy, are you dumb? So damn useless", yelled the handsome guy berating his girlfriend.

"Jason, don't yell at me", said Cindy meekly. They were trying to make a shade for their group, which was now ruined.

Seeing the situation, Aadil came to their help. He asked Cindy to go help the injured.

Cindy went inside the injured's shelter where Kiara was peeling and cutting some unknown fruits into a bowl. Fiona was helping around by fetching water for the patients.

Cindy was still sobbing. She looked around. The blood and unsettling condition of patients were not helping her calm down. Kiara saw her.

"Hey, can you help with this?", Kiara asked the puzzled Cindy.

 "Huh"

"Take these vegetables to Tamara, she is cooking outside"

"oh! Yes.", Cindy took the bowl and went out. Her incessant crying stopped after she got something to put her mind on.

About 50 or so people that were around, no one had any experience of survival in the wild or any catastrophe. They were lucky to have Arav, military personnel, Samuel, a doctor.

Because of these two people, their chances of surviving had increased.

After a few hours, night came. There was no moon, only stars were visible or in the sky. But it was not dark. As various luminous plants and insects were glowing.

Most of the people were now sleeping inside their shade. Few were awake keeping watch.

Inside Kiara's shade, she was exhausted and was in a state of sleeping waking every now and then.

"crunch, crunch"

Kiara heard this crunching voice just near her head. From the voice, she could discern that someone was eating. But it was too loud and violent like no human would eat that way.

She slightly opens her eyes. From the slit of her eyes, she was horrified beyond limits. A black animal-like thing with teeth big and sharp shining like jewels. Eyes azure and shining and paws with nails all smeared in blood and white particles of what looked like head or was head of the patient who was lying next to her. Her face was beyond recognition. Only her mouth part was remaining.

Shocked with this scene, she instinctively pulled out the dagger from under her covers and waved it to the animal as soon as its eyes met hers. She managed to strike the dagger into the eye of the animal. The animal whimpered. Other sleeping nearby were awake after the rustling sounds. Other started coming towards the tent. Meanwhile, that whimpering animal ran away in a dash out of that place.

Arav was first to enter the tent. Samuel and his family were sleeping there itself and had seen the dashing away of the animal. They were shocked by the scene of a half-eaten head of a person.

Kiaras face became pale. She lost consciousness and fell limpid where she was earlier sleeping. Arav saw the mauled dead body of a girl. She was no older than 30. He hardly had any conversation with her. He had seen many kinds of brutality but this one was the most gruesome.

He took a piece of cloth and covered the head part. He then put his hands under Kiara's neck and legs, and took her into his own shade and placed her on his bed.

Kiara was shedding tears and shivering in her unconscious state. He felt a heaviness in his chest. He had been observing her throughout the day. He found her strong-willed. He could see her gritting her teeth and bearing her pain. She would do all she could do to help others, and less to inconvenience others.

He knew how big of an inconvenience and painful it is have both your legs fractured. She wasn't complaining either was she showing any tears. Seeing this, he felt his heart broke. He wanted to hug her and say it's okay to cry.

He hugged the now shivering Kiara and patted her back, saying it's okay. Time went by and not knowing when he too fell asleep.

Next early in the morning, birds chirping could be heard and faint sunlight and coming from the horizon. Kiara was dreaming. It was a dream where she was a little girl and was embraced by her father. This dream was shattered by the realisation that she no longer was a little girl and her father was long dead.

But the warm feeling was not gone. She opened her eyes and saw a man's chest. She was puzzled and then her expression changed into that of disdain. She didn't even want to look the face of the culprit. She wanted to forget it. Her movement woke Arav up. He looked down and saw Kiara and remembered his embarrassing actions

"I'm so sorry, you, you were crying, I wanted to comfort you, there weren't any bad intentions", Arav mumbled in a breath, unable to meet his eyes with her.

"....", Kiara didn't know what to say. It was true that she was shocked and frightened. He helped a lot to stabilise her feelings. But she can't admit that she found solace in strangers arm and that too without her consent. This sentence sound so wrong. And it's not even immoral.

Kiara shook her head ending the spiral of her useless thoughts.

"it's okay, forget it", she tried to move and get out of this embarrassing situation. But wait she can't.

She helplessly looked at him.

"you want to go outside to relieve yourself", for the fitness of her mind, Kiara automatically filtered what Arav said into this sentence in her mind.

 "Can you call Fiona"

Arav went out to call Fiona ending their embarrassment.

Brandon and other people were sitting around the bonfire talking about the incident of the night.

"Did you see the body? It was so gruesome"

"Lucky we were on another side"

"Did you saw the animal"

"Yes, it was huge and black. That girl with broken legs must have seen it clearly. Let's ask her later"

Their discussion ceased as they saw Arav coming out of his shade.

"How is the kid?", Brandon enquired with a worried expression.

"She is fine now"

Brandon and other men had to dig some graves to lay the dead. However bad their situation may be, they can't forget their humanity. Slowly, these men and women gathered together to perform the final rites of these people. They don't know who these people were, what they did, what their religion was. One thing that was common was their destination. Now they were on this unknown island. They could only survive by keeping their humanity intact.
