Chapter 8

May PoV:

Lilith looks very dull today. I have several words to describe her mood now: sullen, feeling down, melancholy, sullen, singing in the blues, and ill-tempered. But they all mean the same anyway so that doesn't quite matter.

I'm not only perfect on the inside but on the outside as well. And when she sees me as the only one around caring for her she will realize those other friends are unworthy.

I texted her for some coffee at manna's cafe. she loves the pudding they serve there. We could’ve met up at Starbucks but it’ll take too long to reach there and we wouldn’t have much to talk to then.

I want Lilith to open up to me. She avoids me a lot these days which is very unlikely for her. I’m growing weary of covering it up. She ignores my calls and texts. She seems distracted and somber. She’s frequently uninterested in a lot of things and gets tired both physically and mentally. Even before her grandmother’s death. She was okay. We were inseparable. She’s my only true friend. I will not give up on her that easily. She’s clearly hiding it from me thinking I won’t notice.

all the bullying. All the rumors. And James.

But wait there's something else, what is it? i will find it out sooner or later. No secrets can hide from me.

To be completely honest, James isn’t her type at all. He just wants attention like Megan. The only reason he became our ‘friend’ is that Beth wanted him to. Like seriously, what does she see in him? She could’ve been a whole lot better if she just let go of him. I tried to speak some sense into you but it was too late. Beth rather showed than tell. It was heartbreaking but right. They were meant to be together. They are the perfect couple after all. But you are perfect without anyone’s help. You just don’t know it yet.

You didn’t say it loud enough and locked your feelings away in a locker. But I’ll get her to say it. I’ll get her to say she’s perfect.

We reached the café. Lilith still looks like she is going to cry. I looked at her concerned. She suddenly plastered on a fake smile and carried her right arm at an awkward angle, as if it were causing her discomfort.

I try to lighten up the rather serious atmosphere with my world-famous jokes.

‘hey Lilith. Wanna hear a cool joke?’

She said nothing but slightly nodded her head.

‘What did the fish say when he swam into a wall?’

‘I don’t know….waht?’

‘dam!’

‘damn? oh! haha, nice one’ Works every time.

‘what do you call a can opener that doesn’t work?’

‘Oh, I know this one! A..uh…can’t opener!’

‘you got it! So what’s bothering you, bestie ?’

‘umm…I’ll let you but first let’s order something I’m starving!’ she said.

We sipped on our hot cocoa since neither of us was in the mood for coffee. We were waiting for, no, she was waiting for Beth and James as soon as possible. I do not feel jealous, just worried they will cause more pain than joy in this little family.

The café was quieter on weekdays as people come to take their food but not stay longer than 5 minutes as most people coming here are workers and businesspeople. So it’s the perfect place to chat.

She finished her cocoa and wiped her mouth with a tissue. it was elegant as a princess.

‘ok, May I give the waiter a tip so she will leave us alone till we talk this one out. I appreciate you coming here with me and trying to cheer me up. I know you are worried about me and trying your best to keep your promise. But it’s just been hard she left me. People say she’s in a better place now but it’s just not the same without her. I don’t know how I can take it. Her death is very mysterious and something very weird is going on with-‘

Just then a certain someone had to interrupt our very important conversation. I can’t bear to see her face, even though I do it every day. There she was, dressed in the darkest clothes as her presence isn’t mood-killing enough. I would’ve not invited her but Lilith liked them. And I have to keep up with it because that’s what best friends do. And because her father can do damage to my family’s reputation. Great, another valid reason to hate her. It also ruins my perfect girl image. Who does she think she is, barging in someone’s life and stealing their crush, their money, and their popularity? She’s only doing this for popularity, I just know it.

‘Ugh, No James, I was wondering how mimes order on the take-away’

‘I don’t know…wait, that was sarcasm isn’t it’ James stood there like a fool than he already is.

Beth sighed and took a seat next to us.

‘whatever’

'hey.'

Lilith flinched at seeing them.

‘oh come on love, you know you are the only one I love. Now kiss me’ he puckered his lips and kissed her in front of Lilith. That witch! Lily’s face became pale and weak but she didn’t say anything.

She stood up and walked to the exit.

‘You know what May? Just forget I said anything. It’s not that important anyway. Anyways you three...Enjoy the rest of the day off. I'm gonna go before my sister gets worried, see ya later,.’

Not another word, she left like the wind. And she’s to blame. I. hate. You. Bethany. Hollow. I’ll make sure you pay. I’ll make sure everyone pays for hurting my best friend. Expect no mercy. I’m no nice girl when It comes down to this.
