Light Magus of Deception

In the near future, people realized that they are able to harness a new type of energy, mana. Slowly, magic became prevalent in everyday life. Being the son of well established doctors, Flynn was half forced to choose healing magic. As mages become more and more powerful, Flynn wasn't happy with the way normal humans were treated. Trying to help the non-mages, he felt like he was involved with a much larger and sinister plot. Disclaimer: Flynn is not a completely good person, he can sometimes be petty and toxic. Extra chapter for every 5 power stones.

Betrayal is common for men with no conscience.

There were two tunnels that led deeper into the mines, both of them were dark and damp. "Well, which way should we go?" Flynn asked. They all looked towards Harry, waiting for him to decide. Closing his eyes, Harry focused on analyzing the weak currents of air coming from the tunnels. After pondering for a couple of seconds, he said, "Head right."

James with a flickering flame in hand, led the way. The ground was slippery, William had a few close calls. They went deeper into the caves, descending in the depths. No one dared to make a sound, scared that something might pounce out any second. However, the journey was peaceful. The group arrived at a large clearing, with only rocks in sight. William and Harry let out a sigh of relief, relaxing their tense nerves. Flynn was still on full alert, keeping an eye out for any sudden movements.

"No signal here," Andrew muttered under his breath, confused. It was unlikely that he would lose connection in the mines, since the school should have had already scouted and mapped out the whole mine beforehand. "What's wrong?" Harry asked Andrew, seeing his slightly worried expression. Trying to maintain his persona in front of the highschoolers, Andrew replied, "Nothing, just a tiny malfunction." Being an expert liar, Flynn could see the subconscious expressions that Andrew made. He gripped the capsules of compressed anesthetics in his hand, preparing to release them at any given time. "Is there anything interfering with the signal?" Flynn asked William. "Hold on a second, I'll check," he said. A large antenna emerged from his backpack, a satellite dish welded on the end. "How many tools does he have inside his backpack?" Flynn thought, in shock.

Looking at the tablet that displayed the results, William furrowed his brows. "What's wrong?" Harry asked, affected by the uneasiness. "The cave seemed to be lined with lead..." William stopped to think midsentence. "That's not possible. Lead doesn't appear like this naturally," he muttered, confused. Instantly, Flynn's eyes widened as he figured everything out. "Retreat!" he shouted, bolting for the entrance. James immediately followed, he was a man who trusted his instincts. But when the two reached the entrance, they froze. The entrance was blocked with white webs! James released a fireball, trying to burn the webs. Although the webs were burned down by the fire, the fire didn't spread. Only the outest layer was destroyed. Flynn instantly activated his Medium, trying to spin the web onto his baton.

At first, he succeeded, the thread slowly being tangled onto his baton, but the vibrations of the web alerted the owner of the webs. Flynn could feel the ground tremble as something was passing through the webs at extreme speeds. "Retreat!" James yelled, also sensing the trembling. As the two backed off, James summoned a wall of fire with a wave of his hands, blocking the entrance.

Everything happened in under three seconds, the other three were still unaware of the situation. "Mana Beast!" Flynn yelled, sending them into full alert. At first, Andrew thought that it was only more rodents, but seeing the terrified expressions on their faces, he knew that the situation was dire. He instantly pulled out his communication device, completely forgetting that it had no signal. "Damn it!" he cursed, putting away his device. "We have to fight, there will be no backup," Andrew said, pulling out his Medium. It was a flaming sword, which looked to be a much higher level Medium than Flynn's baton. Several mechanical arms sprouted out from William's back, each paired with its own weapon. Clearly, he was holding back during the last fight. Harry held a pendant in his hands, which was highly likely to be his Catalyst.

James stood in front with brass knuckles equipped, waiting to be set ablaze. The Mana Beast seemed to be unaffected by the roaring barrier of flames that he conjured, still maintaining full speed. It charged through the flames, leaping towards James. It was a large black spider, the size of a sedan. With eight malevolent eyes locked onto James, it's front legs lashed out. James, who once again proved to be an experienced fighter, slammed his fists together, creating a large explosion. The shockwave from the explosion slowed the spider down while simultaneously knocking back James. Barely dodging the attack, James retaliated with a fireball, which basically did nothing against the hard exoskeleton of the spider.

Annoyed, one of its front legs whipped out, with such speeds that no mage could possibly react in time. James was sent flying, slamming right into the walls. Fortunately, he managed to enhance his body with mana just in time, or he might have broken more than just a few ribs. Blood dripped from his mouth from the impact, he barely managed to stand up straight. The arachnid turned around, locking its eight eyes onto Flynn. "What are you looking at you ugly freak?" Flynn said, taunting the spider. Although not understanding the human's words, the spider could feel that puny human was mocking it. Hissing, it shot out a blob of sticky web fluid at Flynn. "Where are your manners?" Flynn said, smacking down the webs with his baton. "Die, verimin!" Andrew shouted, as he slashed down with his fiery blade. Without even batting an eye, the spider slammed one of its hind legs into Andrew's ribs. Andrew had much weaker physical capabilities than James, he was knocked out instantly.

"I didn't think that you were this unreliable," Flynn thought, seeing their supposedly "protector" being knocked out with single blow. A strand of silk shot towards Flynn. Although he saw the white flash in the corner of his eye, he couldn't dodge it in time. The web tangled around his ankles, reeling him towards the sharp fangs of the spider. Before the spider's fangs could bite down on him, Flynn threw two metalic capsules into its gaping mouth. The anesthetic gas inside the capsules leaked out, covering the spider's head. The spider instantly let go of Flynn, confused from the sudden cloud of pink gas. It's movements slowed down, but the dosage was far from enough to completely paralyze the large spider. Flynn jammed his baton into one of the spider's eyes, green blood splashing everywhere.

The front legs of the spider lashed out, but it was much slower than before. "Move!" William said, as he finished charging up his mechanical arms with a mana crystal. A powerful blast of mana shrouded the arachnid, the spider screeching in agony. James saw this as a perfect opportunity to attack the stunned monster, grabbing Andrew's flaming sword. Hacking at the joint of one of its eight legs, James manage to destroy one of its limbs. Shrieking, the arachnid blindly released shot after shot of webs. Summoning a blue blade in his hand, Scalpel easily cut through the thick shell of the spider. In no time, the spider was dissected into pieces.

James and Flynn sat on the ground, catching their breath. "Is this edible?" Flynn asked, looking at the corpse of the spider. "Want to find out?" James said, with a smile. Flynn unleashed Invigorate on both James and himself, healing the wounds they have accumulated. They were both drenched in sweat, but the feeling of accomplishment for beating such a formidable enemy was so refreshing and rewarding. "Where is Harry?" James suddenly asked, realizing that they were missing someone. Looking around, Harry was nowhere to be seen. Pressing a button on his tablet, the battle earlier was projected on the cavern's wall. "I've recorded everything, let's watch," William said, also wondering how Harry just simply vanished.

Fast forwarding through the video, the three were in shock and disbelief. "Why would he do something like that?" William asked. In the video, they could see Harry slip behind a hidden door, escaping from the room. "I think I have a rough idea why," Flynn said, as his enemies finally began to surface.
