Adeline's POV
I sat at the back of the class. There was no recognizable face in that class. Mostly because I had taken a gap year.
I Sat there for at least thirty minutes before the lecturer burst in through the back door giving me a slight heart attack.
"I'm sorry I'm late, especially on my first day" he said dropping his suitcase on the table.
"I am Mr Jared Garfield and I will be taking you on contract law" he said as he scribbled his name on the chalk board.
"Is there a Mrs Garfield!!"
A girl yelled from the back.
There was a moment of silence before he looked up.
"Yes" he replied and the auditorium was filled with disappointed sighs .
I couldn't blame them. Mr Garfield was a six feet hunk with blue eyes and thick black hair. He looked like he was in his early thirties. He had a stuble on his chin that made him look a bit rough but the good kind of rough.
He was wearing a white shirt with grey suit pants and any one could tell he did some lifting.
"Okay, today I'm going to start with getting to know everyone. I want to have an interactive class"
Uhhhhgh, I hated when lecturers said that. All they meant was that they were going to force people to talk to while away time because because they can't teach well.
"Let's start with you in the front, don't worry I have all day" Mr Garfield said.
"I'm Priscillia!" The girl in front announced before I zoned out. My mind was far away at home. Wondering if I would ever get to go back to my family. Wondering if my sisters would miss me or at least if my room would remain unchanged till I got back.
"And you are?" Mr Garfield said. I snapped back to reality and realized all eyes were on me .
I jumped up from my seat.
"Adeline.. Adeline Friar" I stuttered
"Well Adeline can you tell us a bit about yourself?"
"Must I?"
"Well you mustn't but It'll ruin the mood of the class" he replied looking at me from above the grace of his square glasses.
"Ok. Uhm I like to paint, I took a gap year and I'm ugh a saggitarius" I replied
"Why do you want to study law?"
He asked. Different answers ran through my head but I was determined to not give anything close to my real purpose of being here.
"It doesn't have anything to do with maths" I replied.
There was a wave a laughter that flooded the auditorium as people concurred that they were there for a similar reason.
"I get that" Mr Garfield replied. " since you're the last person to speak today you'll be the representative for this course. You can sit down"
I sunk into my chair with my heart trying to beat its way out of my chest. The attention I had been trying to avoid found its way straight into my laps and I simply was not having it.
" okay. Since today is the first day of class I won't be taking attendance. However I'll be giving an assignment. Go through the most recent cases dealing with the validity of a contract, at least ten of them and write down everything you can take from them, compare and contrast . Deadline for submission is next week Monday. You may go. See you tomorrow." Mr Garfield said and with that everyone began to leave the auditorium.
"Course representative please see me in my office" he added .
I wanted the earth to swallow me whole at that point. After the class the blonde in front came to my seat.
" hey I'm Priscillia. Nice to meet you" she said extending her hand for a shake.
" same, I'm Adeline" I replied as I shook her hand.
" look, I really wanted to be the representative for this course and seeing as you took a gap year I doubt you really have time for all that. So if you could help me pass that along to Mr Garfield it'll be really nice okay?" She said with an obnoxious smile smacked across her face.
Her blonde hair was paper straight and her lips were so red that you would think they were bleeding. As she spoke she made sure to blink her eyes everything a word came out from her mouth.
"Sure" I replied
"Thanks!" she squealed and went on her way.
I found my way to the administrative area and stopped at Mr Garfield's door. I could hear him faintly arguing over the phone.
"I'm not coming home early tonight, just! Please Jenny I can't right now" he said before I knocked on the door.
"Come in" he replied. "Sit" he added as I walked into his office.
His office was practically empty and they were unopened boxes scattered around the floor.
"Sorry I haven't had the time to settle in. Since you're the representative I will be needing your number"
He said.
"About that, I don't think I would be a good fit"
"And why is that?" He's asked.
"Well. I don't know but Priscilla wants to be the representative I think she would be a lot of help" I replied
"You mean the Barbie doll that sat in front?" He asked which made me laugh a bit. "I don't know about you but she's definitely not getting an inch near my phone number. Don't worry I won't stress you out. You'll just be an intermediary between the students and I. It'll only be for my course and who knows you can learn a thing or two along the way. Please reconsider"
I looked at him for a while biting my lip as I what's did when I was nervous.
"I can do it for a while but if it gets stressful will you let me go without any repercussions ?"
"Of course" he replied .
"Okay then"
