Chapter 9

As we stood, intertwining ambitions and motivating one another, unity enveloped us. The game ahead felt lighter with our support. We were prepared for any challenge, confident in our abilities and driven by a shared desire to excel.

With a shared understanding, an unspoken promise formed - to give it our all, leaving nothing on the field. Though our Junior High careers neared their end, the memories, achievements, and friendships we forged would endure, forever etched in our lives.

With determination and a strong bond, we embarked on our journey, grateful to have found a teammate who shared our dedication and passion. Through a simple exchange of words and fist bumps, we solidified our resolve to conquer the challenges together.

Moments later, the referee's whistle pierced the air, signaling the start of the eagerly awaited third quarter. Players hurried onto the court, eager for the game to begin. The coach's booming voice announced the selected players, but to my surprise, my name was absent. I felt bewildered and disheartened, realizing the coach may have thought I was unprepared due to my late departure from the locker room.

The referee blew the whistle, signaling the continuation of the game. Teiko, the opposing team, wasted no time in displaying their exceptional skills. They kept scoring basket after basket effortlessly, widening the gap in the score. My team's motivation started to fade as we struggled to keep up with our formidable opponents.

Unable to bear watching my teammates suffer, I stood up and approached the coach with determination in my eyes. "Coach, please let me play," I pleaded. "I can't just sit and watch as my teammates are humiliated. I want to be there for them, to support and help them."

The coach looked at me, searching for any signs of hesitation or doubt. "Are you sure you're ready now?" he questioned, concern evident in his voice.

Without uttering a word, I simply nodded, my resolve unshaken. Seeing the unwavering determination etched on my face, the coach smiled knowingly and gave me his nod of approval. "Alright," he said. "Go out there and support your teammates."

I felt grateful as the coach showed confidence in me. With a confident smile, I headed towards the scorer's table. But before I could ask for a substitution, the coach called me aside, away from the team.

"I know this seems like a tough game to win," the coach said sincerely. "But I want you to give it your best. Even if we lose, remember that I am proud of you for getting us this far."

I nodded, feeling grateful. "Thank you, coach," I said appreciatively. The coach smiled back at me and encouraged me to go to the scorer's table.

With determination and a sense of responsibility towards my team, I approached the scorer's table. I noticed skepticism and doubt in the eyes of my teammates and the crowd. But I was ready to show them what I got.
