Running out of time

Their tense and somewhat weird atmosphere didn't last long, as Lyle instantly lived up and happily introduced his scary inventions again. Davy was swayed, and his thoughts quickly diverted to these dangerous creations.

They ranged from unquestionable weapons to terrifying bombs in ordinary-looking containers and even some machines that, if invented in reality, would undoubtedly destroy the world. Davy would never be able to look at Lyle the same way again. His mind... was on another level.

They had unknowingly been looking around for hours, but Davy didn't seem tired at all.

"Ah right, I just remembered," Lyle exclaimed, his eyes brightening as he looked at Davy. Davy was moved and smiled as he waited for Lyle to continue. "I already finished it, so wait for me here; it's a surprise!" He bowed down and pecked Davy's forehead before disappearing from view.

Davy's lips curled and he shook his head, curious as to what had gotten Lyle so excited. He hoped it wasn't some sort of explosives again. Knowing Lyle's apparent hobby of experimenting with it, this was not at all far-fetched.

He turned around and stood by the transparent window, overlooking the lush greenery outside. He took a deep breath; nature could truly relax the mind. He walked around and looked around after a few seconds of looking outside. Davy didn't touch anything, though, as a lot of them contain a lot of risks.

His brow furrowed as he passed by rows of strange-looking statues. His steps stopped, stared at the dark hallway. He would have missed it if he hadn't walked back. Lyle didn't say anything about it, so perhaps it wasn't that important to him, as it appeared to be an ordinary hallway.

Davy's inner curious cat kicked in as his feet were faster than his mind in making a decision.

He had already begun walking in the direction of who knows where. Davy shrugged and continued, Lyle hadn't returned yet, so he might as well go exploring on his own. The hallway wasn't particularly long or wide, but it was extremely dark. Davy slowed his pace and supported himself by carefully touching and tracing the wall.

He arrived at the end of the hallway in no time. Despite the dark environment, as he traced it with his own hands, it seemed like a door. He tried to open it as he pushed the door, but it wasn't locked, and Davy opened it easily.

The inside was also pitch black and deafeningly silent. Davy stopped walking and stood still as he breathed. Then he continued on, deciding to search for the power core of the magic light, Unlike his first day being trapped in the virtual world, Davy was now quite proficient in using a lot of magical items.

He didn't immediately continue on his steps; he breathed. At least it didn't smell bad, so it wasn't an abandoned room. He searched for the power core of the magical light, and unlike the night he was trapped in the virtual world on his first day, he was now proficient in a variety of items.

Davy moved slowly as he traced the wall, and he soon found it and blindly operated it. The motion of his hand stopped, and the room immediately lit up. He closed his eyes due to the sudden brightness, which he quickly reopened after confirming that he would not be blinded any longer.

Davy froze and stared at the state of the room that appeared as soon as he opened his eyes. The room's bare walls, which were only white and dull painted... the machines, inventions, and papers scattered and piled throughout the room

It was quite a mess. Davy bowed down to pick up a broken tool, the purpose of which Davy was unsure. Davy's hand stopped and his brows raised as he traced and stared at it carefully.

Davy quickly grabbed another one, and he confirmed it. These tools or inventions appeared to have been purposefully ruined, and the person who did it appeared to be in a foul mood as well; the damage was too severe, and some of it appeared to be burned as well. Davy set them down and wandered around. Their situation was the same, so was Lyle too frustrated with these failures?

His movements were slow and deliberate as if he didn't want to step on something dangerous. Davy also grabbed some paper out of curiosity. Nothing was in good condition, and they were all torn and unrecognizable.

Davy couldn't figure out what it was because there were only lines and shapes on some pieces of paper. He grabbed a few more, attempting to arrange some papers into a full image. He couldn't find one, however, because they were all badly damaged. Lyle appeared to be overly frustrated and ripped them all apart.

Still, as he looked at the torn sketches. Davy narrowed his eyes and knitted his brows as he tried harder to make sense of them. Wait... His eyes glowed.

"A magic circle?" Davy muttered to himself. Was it some sort of magical circle?

He wasn't completely ignorant of magic circles, as this concept appeared in some games, particularly in fantasy genres. Davy examined the incomplete image, but he had no idea what it was for. Anyway, some inventions do need some magic circles to function, right?

Davy shrugged and was about to toss all the papers in his hand to the side and look for the others when his action came to a halt. Something drew his attention. His fingers grab the paper from among the piled papers in his hand, and Davy looks at it intently.

Some text was visible, and it appeared to be a note. The paper was torn like the others. Davy squinted his eyes and looked more closely to read them. The small writing appeared to be a hastily scribbled doodle. Davy could barely read them with some effort.

"I can feel it, time is running out. Soon, he won't wake up anymore." Davy read, whispering it almost to himself. His heart pounded, and the words seemed familiar to Davy.

Then he went on, concentrating on the text at the bottom of the page. "I'm useless," the next text had a faint scribble on it, "I'm afraid."

Davy remained silent and his lips parted. His gaze fixed on the paper as his mind still processed what he had just read. His hand trembled as he read the notes again.

Time. Waking up. What were their connections? Davy narrowed his eyes and forced himself to comprehend these clues, but, as in the throne room, Davy's temple throbbed as if something were preventing him from doing so.

He blinked, his hand gripping the paper even tighter. Why couldn't he ponder it?

"So, you're here," a soft voice interrupted Davy's thoughts, and he turned around only to meet Lyle's emerald eyes.

Lyle's face was still gentle as he looked at him, but something was off with the dimmed luster of his emerald pupils and his smile that didn't reach his eyes, not to mention the slight caution in his tone.

Davy didn't say anything in response, and the throb in his temple had stopped. He swallowed and stared into Lyle's face with a questioning gaze.

Lyle took a step closer to him, and Davy's gaze was drawn to what he was holding, which was a pot of flowers in his hand.

"I didn't see you when I returned, so I had to look for you." Lyle looked around, then smiled, and continued, "It's my waste storage, a lot of my failed experiments were stored here, now that reminded me... I need to clean it again." Lyle explained as if he didn't mind Davy going in there without his permission or whatever Davy saw in there.

Davy looked at him, noticing nothing out of the ordinary. He eventually had to give up. He couldn't discern anything, unlike earlier, which vanished in an instant. He bit his lower lip, the paper was still gripped in his hand, and yet Lyle didn't ask anything about it.

"Just waste?" he managed to utter, probing. He averted his gaze from Lyle and focused on the paper in his hand.

"Hm, all were failures," Lyle said simply, beside Davy's ears.

Davy turned around and returned his attention to Lyle's face. Lyle was also staring at the heap of waste and trash in front of him, and his smile had faded. Davy's heart pounded, and a melancholy expression was rarely seen on Lyle's soft face.

He blinked as Lyle turned, and their gazes locked once more. Davy wanted to open his mouth and ask something, but he remained silent. He had a lot of questions, but something within him was preventing him from asking them. As if he asked another question about the game, his head would hurt again. Davy let go of the paper in his hand.

They only looked at each other. Until Lyle gave a small gentle smile again. The strange atmosphere vanished.

"Here," Lyle said, raising the flower pot he was holding. Davy stared at it, the purple flower that sparkled like a gem capturing his attention.

"What kind of flower is that?" Davy asked, carefully inspecting it; he had only recently realized that he seemed to enjoy flowers and other exotic and strange plants. It might not be his hobby, but perhaps it came from his character.

Still, he enjoyed looking at them. But, until now, no one had actually told him where the motherfucking garden had vanished! Davy had already deduced that it was he--his character--who had hidden it.

"It's a hybrid of a thousand rare plants and a few drops of blood from the strangest void creatures," he explained proudly. Lyle would be more talkative when he was in his element. "So you don't need to adopt any more ugly animals; this plant is also a beast but visually appealing,"

Lyle seemed prejudiced against the ugly and strange animals 'he' apparently adopted, leaving Davy speechless. He had not yet seen them, though.
