Jiang Chen coughed lightly, then shook his head. "It's not small."
Lorna Dann's face brightened with a smile—until Jiang Chen added, "But it's definitely not big."
Her smile vanished, and annoyance took its place. Not too small? And he had to go and add that it's not too big either?
With a serious expression, Lorna snapped back, "It'll grow."
Jiang Chen chuckled and shifted his focus to the red dot on the phone. They were getting close.
If the location tracker was accurate, Anna should be nearby.
Jiang Chen raised his head, setting his gaze on an abandoned nuclear power plant not far off.
"Is Anna in there?" Lorna asked, pointing at the plant.
"Maybe," Jiang Chen replied.
Lorna frowned. The nuclear plant was massive. If Anna was locked inside, there were bound to be guards. Rushing in recklessly might result in her being killed before they could do anything.
"We need a plan," Lorna said, hesitating. "We don't know how many people are in there. Charging in could get Anna killed."
But as she spoke, Jiang Chen had already started walking toward the plant. "If everyone hesitated like you, they wouldn't last long."
Lorna looked at him, irritated. Hesitate? Me? She hurried after him.
"You're being reckless," she warned. "Do you even realize how many guns might be pointed at you the moment you step inside?"
Jiang Chen waved her off, his tone casual. "I'm guessing two, maybe one."
"Impossible!" Lorna huffed.
But as soon as they entered the plant, they saw Anna tied to a chair in the center of the room, gagged and helpless. Next to her sat a man in camouflage, mid-bite into a hamburger.
The man blinked, shocked at their sudden appearance. He pointed at Jiang Chen and stammered, "Why are you here?"
It wasn't just him who was surprised—Lorna was in disbelief too. "Wait, you're alone?" she asked, incredulous.
The man seemed puzzled by her question, his brain struggling to catch up. Alone? Is there something wrong with that?
Jiang Chen turned to Lorna with a smirk. "See? Told you."
"This doesn't make sense!" Lorna muttered, running her hand through her hair. "How can there be only one person?"
The man suddenly snapped out of his daze, dropping his burger and reaching for a gun on the ground. He aimed it at them, his voice shaky. "Hands up! Put them behind your head and—"
Before he could finish, the gun flew out of his hands, suspended in the air as if by magic. The man froze in panic.
He knew he was outmatched. In his desperation, he tried to bolt. But the moment he moved, the spine-chilling sound of a gun being cocked echoed behind him. He turned slowly, his face pale, as the gun—now floating—was aimed directly at his head.
Lorna shot Jiang Chen a suspicious look. "You've got x-ray vision or something? Did you know there was only one guy in here?"
Jiang Chen raised an eyebrow, confused. "What? What are you talking about?"
Lorna glanced down at her own body, then back at him. "If you can see through things, that means you've seen…"
Jiang Chen's eyes widened, and he pretended to look exasperated. "Honestly, there's not much to see."
Lorna bristled. "Not much? Are you saying I'm not attractive?"
The man, still frozen with the gun aimed at him, glanced between the two of them, utterly speechless. He'd been in dangerous situations before, but never had he felt this ignored in the middle of one.
"You realize you could've been shot full of holes coming in here like that?" Lorna asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Jiang Chen just smiled. "What can I say? I've always been lucky."
He walked over to Anna, untying the ropes that bound her. The moment she was free, she threw her arms around him, her voice a mix of fear and excitement. "Big brother…"
Lorna watched the touching reunion for a moment, then turned her attention back to the man with the gun. She approached him coldly, not saying a word, her intentions clear.
Just as she was about to finish him off, Jiang Chen spoke up. "Wait."
Lorna paused, confused. "Why? Scum like this deserves to die."
Jiang Chen shook his head, his eyes locked on a strange mark on the man's hand. "Not yet. I've got a question for him."
