Chapter 77

Ten years had gone by, but nothing of him was lost to me. It was all there—even the hurt. Especially thehurt.

He came back on the line a few minutes later. “Oh, man.”

“What’s going on? Is everything okay with the kids?”

“Listen…Don’t panic or anything, but I need to go pick up Noah and Fay right now.”

“What happened? What’s going on?” I stood, moving for my coat and boots. “Davinder?”

“I don’t know, I think she drank too much. Noah’s a little overwhelmed and he needs my help.”

“Where are they?” I opened the door. “Is she sick? What are they doing getting drunk?”

“I don’t know, Allan. Noah couldn’t talk to me…She was pulling on the phone and slapping him.”

“What?” I shut the door behind me and ran down the steps. “I’m taking a cab there, so give me an address.” It was cold tonight. Damp and windy. I looked around—the streets were dead. I wouldn’t geta cab so easily. I’d have to call one and wait. “It’s gonna be a while before I can get a taxi here.”
