Master Savius's voice cut through the low hum of conversation between the others, commanding and calm as always.
"The objective today is simple," he began, pacing in front of us, hands clasped behind his back.
"Synergy. It's not enough to know your powers. It's not enough to be strong individually. Strength is nothing if you don't know how to use it together. Today, you will learn to fight as one."
The squad stood in formation, a half-circle around him, each of us with our distinct roles.
Kairos, tall and steady, exuded an aura of gravity—both literally and figuratively. His power was earth-shattering, a force that could turn the tides of battle with a single motion.
Aira, her red-and-blue eyes flickering with the latent energy of her dual fire and ice abilities, leaned casually against a nearby pillar, her demeanor easy-going, yet her gaze sharp, always calculating.
And Xander, suddenly in tune with his Ophiuchus powers, had become more silent, more distant. His eyes were unreadable as he stood at the back, shadowed by the weight of his internal struggle.
And then there was me. The newcomer, and the one with the most to prove.
I wasn't exactly the type to stand out, except for the fact that I was the Ophiuchus wielder—the one who could balance creation and destruction.
At least, that's what everyone said.
What they didn't know was that I wasn't sure what I was capable of yet. I was still figuring out how to use my power, how to control the immense energy coursing through me.
I wasn't sure if I was ready to lead, or even to fight with a team.
Master Savius didn't waste time. He gestured to the sprawling training field before us.
As if on cue, the center turned into a massive, arena-like space surrounded by walls of shimmering, ethereal energy.
The ground was littered with obstacles—pillars, trenches, walls—all designed to simulate a real combat environment. I could feel the weight of the impending battle.
The familiar adrenaline started to pulse through my veins, but there was something else too—uncertainty.
"Avant," Savius called my name, breaking my focus. "As the Ophiuchus wielder of creation and destruction, you will be the cornerstone of this team. But your power alone won't be enough to win battles. You need your team, just as they need you."
I nodded, my mouth dry. This wasn't just about showing off my destruction or creation abilities. It was about proving I could fit into this squad—a team with their own distinct strengths and styles.
"Today's lesson is simple." Savius's eyes gleamed as he held up a hand, and the ground rumbled beneath us. "Survive the simulation."
Before anyone could respond, the ground split open. A massive construct, made of twisted stone and energy, emerged from the earth, towering over us. Its eyes glowed with an eerie, pulsating light as it let out a deafening roar, shaking the arena. The temperature dropped, and the hairs on my neck stood on end.
This wasn't some training dummy— this was the real deal.
"Form up!" Kairos's voice cut through the noise, his usual calm demeanor replaced with urgency.
He took command immediately, his gravitational powers flaring as he anchored himself to the ground. "Aira, support Avant on the offensive! Xander, you and I will control the battlefield. Avant, you're the spearhead."
For a moment, I hesitated. I wasn't used to taking orders. Hell, I wasn't used to fighting in a team. But I didn't have time to second-guess myself.
"Got it!" I yelled, dashing forward. The construct swung a massive arm down toward me, the wind howling from its sheer speed and size.
My instinct screamed to unleash destruction, to obliterate it in one powerful strike. But I held back. This wasn't about me going solo. It was about us working together.
I threw my arms out, calling on the Ophiuchus Binding Chains. They erupted from the ground, glowing with destructive energy as they wrapped around the creature's arm, halting its momentum.
Aira appeared beside me in a flash, her hands alight with fire. "I'll soften it up. You get ready to hit hard."
Her flames surged forward, dancing across the chains and engulfing the construct's arm. The stone began to crack, the heat overwhelming it. But even as it burned, the creature's other arm came down, aiming straight for us.
"Kairos!" I shouted, unsure if he was already moving.
But he was already ahead of me. From the corner of my eye, I saw him extend his hand, his expression focused.
The air around us distorted as the gravity shifted. The construct's arm, mid-swing, suddenly jerked upward, its movements sluggish and heavy.
"Gravitational Crush, in effect!" Kairos called out, his voice strained from maintaining the technique.
I saw my opening. With a deep breath, I let go of my restraint, channeling my Ophiuchus energy into pure destruction. My hands glowed with a dark light, and I felt the power surge through me as I unleashed it all at once.
"Shatter!"
The air split with a deafening crack as my destructive energy collided with the construct's body, amplified by the flames still burning on its arm. The stone exploded into pieces, raining debris across the battlefield.
But it wasn't over.
"Watch your flank!" Xander's voice came from nowhere, and suddenly, shadows enveloped me. I could feel the pressure of the construct's energy before I saw it—a smaller, faster construct darting toward me from behind, its arm raised for a lethal strike.
The shadows twisted, and Xander materialized beside me, his sword gleaming with dark energy. With a single, precise movement, he slashed through the construct, disintegrating it into a cloud of dust.
"Stick to the plan, Avant," Xander murmured, his voice playful, a contrast to his brooding appearance. "You're not alone out here."
I nodded, still catching my breath. He was right. I wasn't alone.
"Focus!" Aira's voice snapped me back to the present as she hurled a volley of ice shards toward the remaining constructs. "We need to finish this fast."
"Right." I steadied myself, re-activating the Ophiuchus Chains. This time, I wasn't just aiming to bind the enemy. I felt the destructive energy coursing through the chains, pulsing in rhythm with my heartbeat. I was learning, bit by bit, to control it.
The next few moments were a blur of fire, ice, gravity, and shadow. Each of us played our part, moving like pieces of a larger, coordinated machine.
Kairos kept the enemies pinned down, his gravitational fields manipulating the battlefield to our advantage.
Aira unleashed a barrage of ice and fire, freezing and shattering enemies in quick succession.
Xander darted between shadows, dismantling opponents with precision strikes, all while keeping us cloaked and hidden from danger when needed.
And me? I was the hammer. Every time an enemy broke free or a new threat appeared, I was there to destroy it.
But it wasn't easy.
As the battle dragged on, I could feel the strain of using both creation and destruction simultaneously. My energy reserves were dwindling, and the constructs weren't letting up.
"Avant," Kairos's voice echoed in my mind, calm and steady despite the chaos. "You're pushing too hard. Conserve your energy. Let us handle the smaller ones."
He was right. I had to trust them.
I took a deep breath, pulling back on my power and letting the others take the lead. Aira's firestorm swept across the battlefield, incinerating the weaker constructs. Kairos crushed the stronger ones with sheer gravitational force. Xander's shadows picked off stragglers, one by one.
And then, finally, there was silence.
The last construct crumbled into dust, and we all stood there, panting and battered, but victorious.
Master Savius approached, his eyes gleaming with something I couldn't quite place. "Well done," he said, nodding slightly. "But this was only the beginning. You've learned to fight together. Now, you must learn to truly trust each other."
He turned to leave, but paused for a moment. "Avant, tomorrow you'll lead. The next challenge will be harder. Much harder."
My heart sank a little. Leading the squad? That was a whole different level of pressure. But at the same time, there was a spark of excitement. I was ready to prove myself. To show them all that I wasn't just the new guy with the flashy powers. I was their teammate.
As Savius vanished into the shadows, I glanced at the others. Kairos met my eyes with a nod of approval, Aira offered an encouraging smile, and Xander draped an arm over my shoulder, his trademark playful grin lighting up his face.
We had won this battle, but I knew the real test was yet to come. And as the weight of leadership settled on my shoulders, I couldn't help but wonder—
Was I truly ready for what came next?
