Being Recognized By Mother

Dena thought for a while before finally looking at Ruby solemnly. "Milady, suddenly I remember. Until now, I had never seen that maid again. The butler said she returned to the village because her mother was sick."

"However, now that I think about it, that maid left right the day after the berserkers attacked the palace."

It seemed bizarre.

The maid had not put firewood in Ruby's room so that the fire in her room would went off. However, why would a servant want to harm Ruby?

Ruby had never even seen the maid Dena was referring to.

"I will tell His Majesty about this issue. I hope you can be a witness later," Ruby wrote.

Dena nodded. "Sure, Milady. I will do anything to get those who want to harm you caught."

Because the talk about the maid was over, they walked back to Helena's room. When they arrived there, Ruby saw two healers accompanying Helena. One of the healers helped Helena take medicine while the other massaged Helena's head.

Even at a glance, Ruby could see that her mother's condition was improving.

"Milady, it is an honor to meet you in person." The two healers immediately bowed their backs before Ruby.

Ruby smiled, then handed over the paper. "Thank you for your hard work in trying to heal my mother. I hope we didn't bother you."

A female healer with braided hair shook her head. "You are not a bother at all. We are happy to be able to help Lady Ruby's family."

Dena, standing between Ruby and the healers, finally introduced the healers to Ruby. "Milady, those two are young healers who have just graduated from the medical academy. The woman with one braided hair is Petra, while the one wearing glasses is Rias."

"Even though they are young, His Majesty has seen their abilities before and believes they are capable enough to treat your mother."

Even though Dena didn't explain, Ruby was sure that Matthew wouldn't hire a random healer to cure Helena. Because the man had promised to give the best healer, he wouldn't break his promise.

When Ruby was about to write her reply, she suddenly heard Helena's soft voice. "Ruby …."

Ruby was surprised. She immediately raised her head and looked at Helena in disbelief because Helena usually recognized her as Oscar, not Ruby.

Ruby immediately walked to the bed. She held Helena's hands tightly and wrote. "Yes, I'm Ruby, Mother."

Feeling that Ruby and Helena needed space, Dena and the healers immediately left the room.

"Ruby… my daughter, I never realized you had grown this big." Helena stroked Ruby's hair. Her eyes, which had the same color as Ruby's, gave off the tenderness they had previously lost.

Helena's consciousness gradually recovered. She could think clearly and see the world in front of her for the first time. Even though her mental mind hadn't fully recovered, at least she could tell the difference between imagination and reality.

She could see that the person before her was not Oscar but Ruby.

Unknowingly, tears started to roll down Ruby's cheeks. A soft sob escaped her mouth as Ruby's cry grew louder. Sadness filled her heart, flowing like a river.

Her mother has returned.

Her mother no longer forgets her existence.

When she saw Ruby crying, Helena also shed tears. Her thin arms then wrapped around Ruby's body, hugging her daughter tightly while stroking her back. "Hush now, my sweet child. I'm sorry for letting you carry the burden alone."

"You did great, Ruby. Mother is proud of you."

Instead of stopped crying, Ruby's tears flowed harder and wetted her face. Her body trembled in Helena's arms as she tried to stop her tears.

Ever since Oscar died, Helena had never spoken a kind word to Ruby. She never complimented her and often ignored her existence. Therefore, the sentence that Helena had just said meant a lot to Ruby.

"Mother." Ruby wrote tremblingly, "Can you remember me as Ruby?"

Helena wiped Ruby's tears. A warm smile appeared on her face. "Yes, I can remember you, Ruby. My mind is often out of control, but thanks to the medicine given by the healer, I can control my mind for a while."

Helena had only been on medication for a week, so it was impossible for her to recover fully. Now Helena must rely on drugs to regain her sanity. Sometimes it will last for an hour, or sometimes it can be almost half a day.

"It's okay. As long as you can talk to me, even for a while, I already feel happy," Ruby wrote.

Ruby hadn't talked to Helena in a long time, so when she had the opportunity, Ruby couldn't stop telling Helena about all her experiences over the past few years.

The stories about the Barnette family's treatment, Greysen's rejection, the insults she had to hear, and her marriage to Matthew.

Sometimes Helena would hug her daughter whenever Ruby was in a bad mood, and sometimes she would laugh when Ruby seemed excited to talk about Matthew's greatness.

Unfortunately, the warm and pleasant atmosphere gradually disappeared when the medicine Helena took lost its effect. Helena didn't want Ruby to see herself losing her sanity again, so she asked Ruby to leave her room while Helena was still conscious.

"Mother, I still want to be with you." Ruby lowered her head, her eyes once again watering from holding back tears.

Helena, "We can still meet again tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or next week. Ruby, Mother is always here. Therefore, you don't have to be sad if we have to part today."

Helena was right. Now Ruby can see her mother daily without worrying that Helena won't recognize her.

"Then, I will come every day after Mother takes medicine."

Helena shook her head. "You will be busy after the coronation day. It must be troublesome to have to keep visiting Mother every day. Come every time you're not busy, Ruby."

Ruby held Helena's hand and wrote on her palm. "Mother is never a bother for Ruby."

After hugging each other, Ruby finally walked out of the room. As she stood in the doorway, Ruby heard Helena said softly, "Ruby, take good care of yourself."

Ruby was stunned but then immediately nodded in response.

Helena had already lost her son. If she also lost her daughter, then medicine would no longer be able to cure her madness.
