I became an NPC in The Great Tomb of Nazarick

This is an AU! In a world where Earth is dying and humanity struggles, virtual reality games, especially the VR game YGGDRASIL, provide an escape. Momonga, the leader of a powerful race in YGGDRASIL, remains online as the game faces shutdown. Alone, he reconnects with a comrade, Bukubukuchagama, before YGGDRASIL's closure. Meanwhile, in Nazarick's ninth-floor library, an androgynous character named Thoth, a trapped soul, anticipates freedom as the game ends. Upon the game's closure, Thoth gains control of his movements and discovers his angelic form. As Thoth explores his new abilities and surroundings, a mysterious world awaits beyond the virtual realm. With an enigmatic library, magical prowess, and a goal to adapt to the new world, Thoth embarks on an adventure, uncovering his true potential and encountering diverse characters within the Great Tomb of Nazarick. As the story unfolds, alliances, conflicts, and loyalty to the supreme one, Momonga, shape the fate of Nazarick and its inhabitants in this virtual-to-real fantasy journey. -x-x-x- I've only seen the anime, and have only read the later half of the LN (at which point, the story will be completely different anyway so it won't matter), so forgive any inaccuracies. Also, I don't know much about angel lore as an atheist, so I'm gonna be making up my own stuff. Hope you like the story and have a good one. In an ocean not so far away...

The ocean is a place not so well explored in this world, not to mention the entire thing is fresh water instead of salt water.

Deep within the vast ocean, off of the coast of the Kingdom to the east, a city lies hidden beneath.

Despite its location beneath hundreds of tons of water, not a single of the spiraling towers, not a single of the grand buildings, was covered in any water.

This was thanks to the large bubble-like shield protecting it and its inhabitants.

The city is bustling with people, most humanoid, but some also more animalistic.

By that, I mean not furries or the like. Full-on animals could be seen, centipedes flew above the city as they carried various items, birds soared above as if they were not under the sea, and various other creatures, such as arachnids, mammals, insectoids, and so on filled the streets with life.

Amongst such a diverse group, only one common theme could be found.

An air of divinity.

Physically speaking, they looked exactly as one would expect an animal of their kind to look, even the size was as one would expect with a few exceptions scattered about. Nonetheless, the city could be seen swarming with life.

The city itself looked remarkable, with a French architectural style. This meant grand gardens, large fountains, and beautiful scenery at every corner. Besides this, the city stood out with its blue roofs, white marble walls, and many detailed statues of angels and other divine creatures scattered about.

One of these statues in particular stood out.

Placed at the north end of the city in front of a castle, the statue, unlike the others, was made out of pure gold.

It depicted a large featureless humanoid wielding a brilliant white lance stabbing itself through the heart. Pure white blood flowed out of the wound.

Of course, this blood was just white marble with some extra spice added onto it through magical means, but what was more attention-grabbing was what the figure seemed to be hunched over protectively.

With two great wings covered in eyes extending from its back to the front of its body and said body kneeling over a strange item, the surrounding creatures worshipping the statue couldn't help but remember the words of God.

"One day, a child of mine shall return to our world. When it does, it shall reform the wicked, protect the faithful, and save you all."

Those words were the last thing they heard from God -The most powerful of all holy kind- and they rang through their minds every day.

The small white crystal, held in the hands of the statue of God as he huddled around it, was something none of them knew the meaning of.

After all, angels are born like humans, no angel has been created from some crystal, no matter how holy or pretty it may be, and so they waited. Hiding away in this protective bubble, protected from aging but also prevented from reproducing, granted human levels of intellect but also left with some of their more primal impulses.

Within the castle behind the statue, behind its lapis lazuli walls and obsidian gate, deeper within, past the gardens and fountains within the Tower of Rune -The tallest of all the towers- stood a person.

This person is mostly of a female, human appearance. But the way her eyes, teeth, nails, and feet looked made that conclusion impossible to make.

Her skin is a pristine white with no flaws, much like that of a porcelain doll's. The eyes were a sickening light green that seemed to swirl around the pupils- or they would if the person had any- Indeed. Their eyes are white with a green storm laced with black lines swirling within them.

Her teeth are similar to those of a shark, though she has only two layers, unlike the average of 15 rows of teeth that sharks have.

Her nails are long, each one measuring about 5 cm in length, and all of them come to a sharp peak with a menacing divine glow.

Her feet were a league of their own, from the waist down, she was a pristine white centaur, she could harden the hair on her centaur half to stand at attention with sharpness equal to that of a hedgehog's or porcupine's on steroids. Her humanoid body did not have any fur.

Oh, and how could one forget! Her hair.

Instead of hair, she has snakes looking and moving around, each acting with complete free will, some of them could be seen fighting while others wrapped around one another and cuddled.

She is a Cherub, an angel of immense power and importance.

The Cherubim represent love and purity, but depending on the religion can also represent animals and such -hence why her appearance is... Well, calling her multiple animals taped together would not be wrong from a biological perspective.

Their role in heaven was simple. Hold up God's throne and sing praise onto him, lest they fall.

The room itself is fairly simple, with a large balcony wrapped around the tower's peak, allowing one to have a clear view of the city, various small bookshelves, and a large mirror, which the angelic woman is currently staring into.

She sighed as a humanoid goat entered the room.

The humanoid gray goat was crowned with a pair of wickedly curved golden horns. It is dressed in a black suit and velvet cape, with a rose pinned on its left shoulder. Upon its head is a beau and the right side of its face is covered with a golden mask.

It spoke, its voice theatric and filled with vigor, though the hidden menacing feeling it gave could not be shaken away.

"My dear Charlotte, what is taking you so long? The believers are expecting your speech of encouragement!" (Humanoid Goat)

The woman, now known as Charlotte, spoke up with a sigh and a defeated look in her eyes.

"Ulbert Alain Odle-" She was interrupted by Ulbert, who told her to just call him by his first name, "-Right, Ulbert, you know very well why I don't want to head over there, it just... It's been so long already! We've waited and waited, yet where is our savior?" (Charlotte)

Ulbert nodded and approached her, giving her a steady pat on the back.

"I understand how you feel, but you must not give up lest the angels within the city all give up too, and you know how bad that would be no? Besides, I still need your aid to vanquish my enemies!" Ulbert grasped her palm in his hands, "Now, my fair lady, shall we?" He motioned to the door that led out of this room.

Charlotte giggled at his theatrics and nodded, leaving the room with Ulbert by her side.

As they walked, Charlotte couldn't help but ask Ulbert some questions.

"Say Ulbert, who are these enemies of yours? You've always been so vague about it. I just want to help you more is all." Charlotte gulped as Ulbert's eyes hardened more and more as she spoke, she had asked this question multiple times, and it was clear the man's growing sick of it.

Ulbert sighed.

"You just won't stop asking, will you? Fine. I'll give you the smallest nugget of information, but never ask me this again or I will simply leave." (Ulbert)

Charlotte nodded.

"It is a tomb filled to the brim with creatures beyond your level in strength, each one could probably destroy this entire place, though maybe... Yes, you might survive their attacks if the citizens worked as meatshields for you." (Ulbert)

"I would never use my wards as meatshields!" (Charlotte)

"Then you would die as well, sadly." (Ulbert)

An awkward silence hung in the air for a short while until Ulbert spoke again.

"Still no signs of the child?" (Ulbert)

Charlotte shook her head.

The city is completely cut off from the outside world in all but one way. This way is divination magic. They periodically scan the continent next to them for any signs of powerful celestial beings, sadly, the detection array has a flaw, but it should be irrelevant.

It can only detect beings with a positive alignment, but the child of God should be a paragon of good karma, so that is not worth mentioning at all. This has left her deeply worried, what if God was mistaken again? What if his son died while young and vulnerable?

Charlotte shook her head to pull herself together. Such things are irrelevant. She must have faith.

Ulbert nodded.

He did not give a flying fuck about Thoth, but since he was Touch Me's NPC, he surely has a positive alignment, so he too simply shook his head and dropped the matter.

Still, he couldn't help but think back on his time in Nazarick and how much fun he had.

Ah, how he longed to meet his creations, especially Demiurge, initially he was terrified of his circumstances, but after 200 years in this world, Ulbert feared nothing.

He is, after all, Ulber Alain Odle, a fearsome monster capable of killing orphans with a cruel smile. And yes, he has done that -He's done a lot more than that. But the past 100 years have been very peaceful for him, as he spent them here.

He squeezed his hand into a fist as he remembered Touch Me, that irritable self-righteous privileged asshole. His mind immediately created millions of ways that he could kill the bastard, but after a few seconds, Ulbert suppressed such thoughts.

One of the quirks of his new form was the violent impulses, though he also noticed that with them came immense confidence, hell, downright arrogance, and his mind felt clearer than ever to match. Still, with great power comes no responsibility, so he's done whatever the hell he wanted to while searching for the others, though he must admit, it gets lonely without them.

A part of him is constantly pestering him to find the tomb, to make sure it's safe, to make it grow and prosper no matter the cost, and this part of him has not gotten any quieter, though it at least hasn't gotten louder either.

Ulbert has gotten used to it, but it irked him still.

Still, he preferred this to his previous, miserable existence, and he certainly owed one to Momonga for sending him that message, asking him to join on the last day.

Ulbert did so, but due to an error in the game, his avatar manifested somewhere away from Nazarick, and here he is. Waiting for Nazarick to come, using some stranded self-righteous angels to help him detect their hopefully inevitable arrival.

Or maybe Nazarick is on a completely different continent, planet, or in a different universe altogether, who the hell even knows at this point?

So the duo came to the statue of God and gave a speech, Ulbert once again felt grateful for his ring that nullified his presence, allowing him to keep his negative alignment secret from these beings.

The speech was as boring to Ulbert as ever, he had heard thousands of speeches by now, and they simply weren't it for him anymore, though the angels looked very pumped up after it.

Good for them.
