Chapter 5: Part 2 - Off Shift

I got home with a bag of leftovers in hand. Sarah always loved the stuff I brought back from the hotel so I chose some of her favourites; pastries, smoked salmon salad, some baked potatoes and a tub of pasta with chicken and cheese all over it.

I jingled the keys but before I could open the door, the door swung open, and Sarah stood there beaming. Her hair was tied up in a bun and she had an apron and gloves on.

"You're home! I hope you like what I did, I tried my best" She said smiling, and stepped aside to let me in.

I walked into my house and my jaw dropped. Right. I asked her to clean…the whole…apartment.

The first thing I saw was that she had decided to clean the fan…without putting down newspapers. The ceiling fan was clean, but there were black stains all over the floor as she must have stepped in the dust that fell and didn't notice it.

Speaking of stains, there were stains on the wall where she had tried to clean the window, and somehow managed to splash dirty water all over the walls. The curtains looked like they were dripping from all the way across the room, which means…did she try to wash the curtains by hand…without taking them off the hooks?

I looked over to the couch and sighed. It was covered in dust. Dust from the ceiling fan. Black caked dust. I don't think I ever checked to see if the cleaners who cleaned my apartment every touched the fan, and honestly that was fine as I never used it - I always had the aircon on anyway.

"Don't worry, I was just looking for the vacuum cleaner, but I got distracted as I realised that I still hadn't made dinner yet, so I started cooking" Sarah said brightly.

I looked at her, and I gripped the bag of hotel food tightly, thinking maybe bringing it home was a waste, but then I relaxed. Looking at the state of the house…what were the odds that the food that she made, was in a similar state…

I walked silently to the kitchen and stopped in the doorway. There was…what was that…batter? There was batter all over the counter…And is that fish? Did she try to make…fish and chips?

I put down the packed food on the only clean space I could find and groaned as I stepped in something wet and sticky. I looked down at my foot. More batter.

"Oh sorry! I dropped the bowl, let me –" Sarah said as she leaned down to scoop up the batter with her bare hands.

"Stop! Just…" I shouted and then sucked in air through my teeth.

Sarah jumped back, wide-eyed, looking surprised and hurt.

"I'm not mad. Don't look at me like that, I'm not mad, I swear" I said, even though I was seething, I didn't want to freak her out while I pulled out my phone.

I dialled the number to my apartment management agency that usually handled my serviced apartment.

"Hello Ms Fairfield, did you want to cancel your next cleaning as well?" The receptionist said after picking up.

"No, I need an emergency session. The apartment got attacked by a cat, and it's a mess now. How soon can you have people come around?" I asked, smiling at Sarah as she perked up, looking around as if looking for the cat, when she was, in fact, the cat in question.

"Sure, we can come over in 30 minutes. Will you be in the apartment at the time?" the receptionist asked.

"No I'll be out, please have someone ring me when the apartment is back to normal, thank you" I said.

"Will do, have a good day ma'am" the receptionist said and hung up.

"What cat?" Sarah asked, looking confused.

"You. You are the cat. I brought food from the hotel, let's go eat at the park…after I wash my feet" I said and gingerly walked to the bathroom to clean off.
