During the second week of the Easter holidays, Kyle still kept to his routine. He left the common room after breakfast every day and didn't return until evening.
But he wasn't going to the library. He wasn't going to the Room of Requirement on the eighth floor either. He spent the whole day in an abandoned classroom on the third floor.
And he wasn't alone. Fred and George from Gryffindor, Cho Chang from Ravenclaw, Kanna, and Cedric were also in the classroom.
Six people in total, all bustling about in the small classroom.
"Kyle, can you check if this pattern is correct?" Cho Chang put down her knife and wiped the sweat off her forehead, "I feel like something's wrong."
"It doesn't matter. A little flaw isn't a big deal." Kyle said without looking up, "Nobody will notice. As long as the general idea is there, it's fine."
Kyle was also holding a small knife in his left hand, and a branch in his right hand.
—A branch from a rowan tree. One of the branches he brought back from the Forbidden Forest.
Kyle first shaved off the bark and unnecessary parts. Then, he skillfully carved a series of irregular lines on it with his knife.
Soon, an oval-shaped wooden pendant was ready. The surface was engraved with a wand and a quill crossed.
Next to him, there were many similar pendants. Oval ones, triangular ones, and square ones.
The other five people were also working hard like Kyle, transforming themselves from wizards into carpenters.
As it neared noon, Fred patted the wood chips off his body. Looking at his "achievements" of the morning, he couldn't help but frown. "Kyle, are you sure we can sell these?"
The others looked up at Kyle too.
They had been called here by Kyle two days ago. He said he was going to pull off a big deal.
With the successful experience of selling maps before, they were initially very excited. They didn't doubt anything and obediently followed Kyle's instructions.
But they hadn't expected Kyle to make them carve wood for two days. And they weren't even allowed to use magic. They had to do it all by hand.
They couldn't understand this.
"We should be able to."
Kyle thought for a moment, "Rowan amulets are still quite popular in the wizarding world."
"Wait… we're making amulets?" George asked incredulously.
They had no experience in carpentry. Although the things they carved weren't ugly, they weren't exactly beautiful either. And their shapes were all over the place.
Even he wouldn't lie and say that these shoddy things were amulets.
"The ones you and Fred made are just wood lumps." Kyle said, "But after Kanna and the others carve patterns on them, it'll be different."
The others looked at each other, doubtful of Kyle's words.
Unless these patterns were special magical symbols, like ancient runes, even if you carved a hundred of them, they would still just be wood lumps.
"Speaking of which…" Cedric couldn't help but ask, "What are these patterns? I've never seen them before."
"It's the symbol for passing exams. You could think of it as 'Passing Every Exam'."
Kyle thought for a moment, "At the 1790 Wizarding Convention, the bill to establish the Wizarding Examinations Authority was formally passed. In the same year, Hogwarts held its first N.E.W.T.s exam.
The young wizards who passed the exam received a special letter from the Ministry of Magic. The envelope had a pattern of a quill and a wand crossed.
Later, this pattern became a symbol of passing exams. At the time, many graduating students, for good luck, would draw this pattern and carry it with them before the exam.
But after Professor Marchbanks became the head of the Examinations Authority, they replaced the pattern with a regular envelope."
Fred and the others gaped at Kyle and asked instinctively, "1790? That was two hundred years ago, how do you know this stuff?"
"By reading."
Kyle shrugged, casually saying, "If you had finished reading 'Hogwarts, A History,' you wouldn't be so surprised."
Reading… oh, okay.
Fred and George simultaneously looked away and gave Kyle a thumbs up.
The book, "Hogwarts, A History" was big and thick. You could use it as a shield. It was fine to flip through it occasionally and read something interesting, but saying they finished it was too difficult for them.
And forget Fred and George, even Cedric hadn't finished it.
But that wasn't the point.
After this explanation, they understood Kyle's intention.
Although these things made of rowan wood weren't really amulets, there was no denying that they were very attractive.
Especially at this time.
Even Fred and George were a little tempted.
If someone had sold this before the final exam last year, they might have actually bought it.
"But Kyle, can't we just use the Copying Charm?" Cho Chang asked in confusion. "Like the maps, wouldn't it be much easier?"
"Of course, we can. But that's a different price."
Kyle wagged his finger, "This time, I'm planning to make three levels of products. Custom-made high-end ones for ten Galleons, handmade ones… the ones we're making now for two Galleons. And finally, a one-time mass-produced product for five Sickles."
"That cheap?" Cho Chang didn't understand.
After all, a map cost ten Sickles. They were both copies. But it was much more troublesome to copy these sculptures than it was to copy a map.
Before Kyle could explain, Cedric seemed to have thought of something. He turned to Cho and asked, "How much pocket money do you have left?"
"Pocket money?" Cho thought for a moment, "I spent quite a bit a while ago. I probably only have a Galleon or so left..."
Suddenly, she paused, a look of realization dawning on her face.
"Get it now?"
Kyle laughed, "It's the end of the term. Most people don't have much money left. If we set the price too high, they can't afford it, even if they want it.
Besides, this time, we're not just targeting the first-year freshmen. We're targeting the whole school. The number is several times higher, so five Sickles is enough. Consider it making friends."
Everyone automatically ignored Kyle's last sentence. If they remembered correctly, he had said the same thing when he sold the maps.
Five Sickles to make friends. What about the other two…
Fred and George didn't say anything. They lowered their heads. The branches in their hands seemed to transform into Galleons. And all they had to do was carve them out.
"Right…" Kyle seemed to suddenly remember something. "The ones that aren't made with the Copying Charm, remember to carve the year on them."
