Charles returned home an hour after Elaine was expected to be back. She left the party long before him and so he waited behind to give her some space so that he could come home to finish their earlier conversation whether she liked it or not. In his opinion, they weren't finished talking about Richard and their feelings for each other. Charles would never drop the idea that Elaine and he could love each other and be happy if they just gave it a try.
Wesley had also come home with his father after sending Isabelle home in a car service. After Eli left the party started to become a dull moment and Wesley no longer felt like entertaining Isabelle. The woman was clearly sulking over her friendship with Helen but whose fault was that? Technically Wesley but also Isabelle since she shouldn't have been so naive and not listen to her friends.
