The sound of trickling water filled the silence that followed. It was their only companion for a few minutes.
"A man like him? What sort of man is he, sister?"
"A king. An arrogant man. A man who…"
"Somehow reminds you of your truth?" Beth finished insistently, coming to stand by her. "He reminds you of your emotions, Gwen, or am I mistaken?" Silence. "Tonight, when you stood with Lady Marjorie and I, and when you laughed with the other ladies, I dare say it is the happiest I have ever seen you."
She smiled. It was the happiest she had been at any ball.
Beth gently turned her so they were face to face. "You walked about the room with a smile that must have been sincere. Did it not please you?"
