Chapter 10: Arriving at Hogwarts
As the train came to a halt, several students got off the train, some excited ones pushed and shoved each other towards the doors.
Getting off the train to a small and dark platform, Alan drew out his wand from his hand holster.
"Lumos." He recited the wand-lighting charm, which gave him some comfort.
Alan stared at the tall figure who had just appeared on the platform holding a lantern in his hand.
It was Hagrid.
"Firs' years, Firs' years over here! Ala'n come he'r, how are you doi'n?"
Hagrid asked him as the students gathered around the tall giant.
"I'm feeling alright," Alan said with a smile while Hagrid nodded.
"Come on, follow me, are there any first ye'r students? Watch yer step. Okay! First-year students, follow me!"
At Hagrid's shout, all the first-year students scrambled up to follow him, occasionally slipping and stumbling down a narrow steep path.
Looking around the whole crowd of first years, Alan didn't see Hermione, Neville or Ron anywhere.
He shrugged and continued walking forward.
It was pitch black on both sides of the road, the only thing glowing was the tip of his wand which only brightened what he saw slightly.
For the other students, however, it was really hard to see anything.
They walked cautiously for a while before Hagrid turned once again and shouted. "Turn this corner, and ye'll see Hogwarts for the first time."
Then there was a loud "Oh!"
A black lake suddenly became visible at the end of the narrow road.
On the hillside across the lake stood the same majestic castle with its towering spires everywhere, windows twinkling under the starry sky.
When they first saw Hogwarts this close up, many students were amazed.
But Hagrid didn't give them much time and pointed to a group of small boats moored on the shore and said loudly. "No more than four people on each boat!"
Alan looked around for the trio but still couldn't spot them so he decided to just pick a random boat.
Alan sat down in the small boat after which two girls and one boy, also plopped down.
"Everyone aboard?" called Hagrid, who was standing on one of the small boats by himself. "Well then… let's go!"
A fleet of small boats immediately sailed forward across the mirror-like lake.
Alan curled his lips as he saw a small squid waving at the students which terrified one of the girls in the same boat as his.
"The squid is completely harmless, It's actually more helpful than dangerous. Or at least from what I've read, the students who fall off the boats are brought up by it again"
Alan said with a smile to the brown-haired girl.
"Really?" She asked a bit uncertain.
"Yeah, otherwise what's the point of keeping a giant squid near the school?"
Alan replied with a grin before it turned into a polite smile.
"I'm Alan, Alan Potter" He introduced himself to the other people in the boats.
The girl who was momentarily terrified, perked at this excitedly. "Are you really? My name Is Tracy Davis, Nice to meet you, Alan!"
She said cheerfully.
Alan was baffled at how quickly her mood changed from gloomy to cheerful all of a sudden, but he smiled and nodded nonetheless,
Alan turned away from the cheerful girl to two people opposite of him, a blonde girl with an icy face and a dark-skinned boy who was looking at him curiously.
"Daphne Greengrass." She said simply.
"Blaise Zabini, a pleasure to meet you Mr. Potter" he replied coolly.
"Pleasure's all mine," He replied with a polite smile.
"Excited to for the sorting ceremony? Which house do you think you'll end up in" Alan asked curiously.
They all looked at each other before they all responded in turns
Tracy went first. "I'll probably be sorted into Slytherin, most of my family are from there." She said joyfully.
Alan nodded with a smile as he turned to the other girl.
"Slytherin or Ravenclaw," Daphne responded with that same cold voice.
'Occulmeny?' Alan mused.
"I'll probably also be sorted into Slytherin, Or at least I hope so," Zabini answered honestly.
"What about you?" Zabini asked curiously.
Alan smiled at that.
"Honestly I don't know which house I want to go to. In all honesty, I don't care which house I end up in, since all their traits align with myself, but if I needed to pick a house… it would be Hufflepuff."
Alan answered thoughtfully.
They seemed a bit stunned by the answer.
"Why Hufflepuff though? Shouldn't you be like really Gryfindorish and all that?" Tracy asked a bit confused.
Alan laughed.
"I don't know why people assume I'll automatically end up in Gryffindor, honestly I'd probably go Hufflepuff.
From what I know Gryfindors are more reckless than courageous and they act like bigots against anything even remotely dark.
Slytherin is the same but instead of recklessness they act extremely arrogant and think they are superior to everyone else. No offense.
Ravenclaw is a good choice too, but it's a little bit too isolated for me since most of the time they just read books, while that's nice and all. I mostly read for the sake of learning, most of them read for the sake of reading."
The girls seemed to accept that answer.
Though Zabini wasn't
"You still haven't said why you think you'll be sorted into Hufflepuff?"
Alan grinned.
"Their common room is closest to the kitchens."
They all laughed at that.
The reason was somewhat true though, he did fit into Hufflepuff, he was hardworking and patient, but most of all he would be underestimated.
It would allow him to show everyone that hard work was one of the best traits to have among the four houses.
By showcasing how much better he was at magic than most of his peers which would allow him to prove to others that he did have the qualifications to help others. Which in turn would help him gain SP!
After all what better place to start the grind other than Hufflepuff?
Monke strong together!
As they approached the cliff on which the castle, it seemed to almost tower over them.
"Lower ye'r heads!"
Hagrid shouted as the first boats approached the cliffs.
Everyone lowered their heads obediently, and the boat carried them through the ivy curtain covering the front of the cliff to the docks.
They followed a dark tunnel that seemed to lead to the basement of the castle and finally reached the underground docks. Everyone climbed off the boats and onto the ground where pebbles and gravel lay.
Then they went through a small dark tunnel. And finally reached a flat damp meadow in the shadow of the castle.
They climbed a flight of stone steps and gathered in front of a huge oak door.
"Are you all here? Good."
Hagrid said as he raised his huge fist and knocked on the huge castle door three times.
The door opened immediately.
A tall, black-haired witch in emerald-green robes stood in front of the gate. She had a serious expression on her face.
It was everyone's favorite cat lady; Minerva McGonagall The Deputy headmistress of Hogwarts.
"First year, Professor McGonagall," said Hagrid.
"Thank you, Hagrid. I'll take it from here."
She opened the door wide, revealing a hallway big enough for two giant trucks to drive through., with torches blazing all around the stone walls.
A ceiling you could barely see the top of. and in the front was a luxurious marble staircase leading directly to the upper floors.
Alan grinned as he and the other first years followed after Professor McGonagall along the stone floor.
