The Solution

Mages usually used spells to fight, it was their main strength and main abilities. Unlike knights, they were weak physically and always lost in close combat to more powerful opponents, but at mid and long-range they were the best.

Some archers had good physical stats, almost like knights, but their attacks were not as varied as mages. Also, besides devastating attacks, mages had many other spells suitable for any situation.
