Smack!
Cinderella clutched her cheek, head lowered, her face a mask of hurt and resentment.
"Cinderella, this mess today is entirely your fault!"
Madame Temani's face twisted with anger as she glared at Cinderella.
"I—I didn't know Lord Rhodes was a legendary mage! I thought he was just an ordinary civilian."
Madame Temani almost laughed in disbelief at Cinderella's excuse.
"An ordinary civilian? Really?"
"Can ordinary civilians command monsters to pull their carriages? Can they casually hand out sacks of gold? Or wear palace dresses worth hundreds of gold coins?"
Anyone with half a brain would know these people are either wealthy or nobility. Yet this silly girl claimed they were just regular folks.
If it hadn't been for that mage's unusually good temper... who knows how things would've ended for them.
Cinderella bit her lip and stayed silent, her head still bowed, her expression pitiful.
Seeing this, Madame Temani's anger cooled, albeit slightly.
"Don't let it happen again!"
"I understand, Mother," Cinderella replied quietly, slowly retreating from the room.
"That girl will be the death of me," Madame Temani muttered as she sank back into her chair.
After a moment's thought, she called for her other two daughters.
"Anastasia, Tricia—between you two, who wants to serve our distinguished guest tonight?"
Madame Temani's eyes calmly swept over her daughters, who stood before her in silent anticipation. She had raised them strictly, molding them to be perfect ladies, though perhaps a bit too naive and sheltered. In terms of beauty, they were no less enchanting than Cinderella, with the same allure and elegance, possessing curves and charms that any man would find hard to resist. She had high hopes for them, hoping they would one day marry into noble families.
But choosing between them was no easy task.
"Mother, let me do it!" Anastasia volunteered, unable to contain her excitement.
Serving a legendary mage, possibly a future earl? That would be an honor few could dream of.
"Why should you be the one, sister?" Tricia argued, looking less than thrilled at her sister's eagerness.
Madame Temani sighed and picked up a coin from the table. "We'll settle it with this. Whoever guesses correctly will serve Lord Rhodes tonight."
In truth, had she been ten years younger and unmarried, she wouldn't have missed out on this chance herself.
Meanwhile, out in the corridor, Cinderella's face darkened with anger.
"That old hag dared to slap me! One day, when I become a noble lady, I'll make sure they all pay."
This was the first time she had ever been struck, and it left a bitter taste. But what could she do now? Madame Temani would surely have her two daughters serve Lord Rhodes tonight, rather than leaving such a rare chance to Cinderella.
Give up? Not a chance.
An opportunity to associate with a legendary mage might only come once in a lifetime. If she missed it now, who knew when another chance might come? Ten years? Decades? Would her prime years go to waste, with her beauty hidden away like some pauper's daughter?
No, she couldn't let that happen.
Determination flashed in Cinderella's eyes as she turned and headed straight for Rhodes' room. She would seize her opportunity before those two clueless sisters could even think about it. Once she had Rhodes's favor, what could those two possibly do to compete with her?
"You foolish girl!"
A sudden, sharp laugh echoed in the corridor, startling her.
"Who's there?"
Cinderella looked up, eyes wide, as a woman appeared out of nowhere. She was clad in a resplendent black gown, intricate as a black crane's feathers, a black lace veil covering her face. Her beauty was as enchanting as it was sinister, her figure sinuous and enticing.
"I am the Original Witch, though you may also call me the Fairy Godmother."
The woman's bare feet glided over the floor as she moved closer, exuding an intoxicating allure that left Cinderella's cheeks flushed, her mind wandering to things she'd never considered.
"I'm here to help you fulfill your wish."
The woman brushed her hand gently against Cinderella's cheek, eyes twinkling with mischief.
"Ambition, deceit, cunning... You know how to use your charms to get what you want. You're far superior to that useless father of yours. I once offered him an opportunity, but he failed to grasp it."
At the mention of her father, Cinderella's wariness grew. She glanced at this strange woman, suspicion plain in her eyes.
"Who are you, really? How do you know my father?"
"I told you, dear. I'm the Original Witch, your Fairy Godmother. And as for your father?" The woman smiled slyly. "Let's not let that sad topic spoil our fun. Why worry about a worthless man?"
"Yes, he was a waste," Cinderella replied coldly, her voice flat. Her father's only legacy had been misery, leaving her mother to die on the streets. If it weren't for him, she wouldn't have ended up in this desperate state.
"So why would you help me?" Cinderella narrowed her eyes at the woman. There was no such thing as help without strings attached; she knew that well.
"Why help you?" The witch lifted her hat, smiling. "Because you're my blood."
Cinderella's eyes widened as the witch continued, "Your ancestors inherited my power. It's a gift that lives in your bloodline—a power that makes others fall for you, losing themselves in desire and lust."
"But," she added, her tone chilling, "I won't help you for free."
Cinderella frowned, "What do you want in return?"
"A sacrifice." The witch's gaze grew sharp and predatory. "I need a blood sacrifice, with the flesh and souls of tens of thousands, to break the seal imprisoning me."
Cinderella's eyes widened. "A blood sacrifice? Isn't that...?"
The Original Witch chuckled. "Oh, dear, flesh is weak and bitter. Only death brings eternal peace. I'm simply offering them salvation... a chance to seek immortality by my side."
The witch's words sent chills down Cinderella's spine. Dressed up as mercy, it was still the devouring of lives and souls. This was the kind of magic only an evil god would wield.
"Does it matter to you, though, if I'm an evil god or not?" The witch laughed softly, watching Cinderella's fear.
Cinderella lowered her gaze. "I'll agree to anything, as long as I get what I want—even if it means making a deal with the devil. But why did you stop me from going to Lord Rhodes?"
"Why would I stop you?" the witch's figure flickered, appearing behind Cinderella like a shadow. "You naive girl, do you think your charms can control a demigod?"
"A... demigod?" Cinderella had never heard the term before.
"Think of it as a lesser god," the witch explained, her tone amused. "They have divinity and could become gods with enough faith. You wouldn't stand a chance."
Cinderella's brow furrowed. "Then what should I do?"
The witch smirked. "There's Earl Rochester's son, Kurt. He'd be a much better target."
Cinderella thought for a moment. The prince wasn't a legendary mage, but he was the heir to a noble title. Young, impulsive—easy prey.
"But how do I get close to him?" she asked. Royals didn't mingle with commoners easily.
"Tomorrow at noon, he'll be hunting in the royal forest. Go there, wait for the right moment, and show him your kindness. That's something you're good at, isn't it?"
The witch's laughter echoed as she faded away, leaving Cinderella alone, her mind spinning with thoughts.
Meanwhile, back in Rhodes's room, a flustered Anastasia stood at the door in a thin silk nightgown, cheeks flushed.
Rhodes's eyes sparkled with surprise. He'd expected Cinderella to try her luck first, but here was Anastasia, proving he might have underestimated her.
"Lord Rhodes," Anastasia whispered, her voice barely audible as she blew out the lamp, "please allow me to serve you tonight."
"Such potent demonic energy," Rhodes thought with a wry smile.
The exorcism went smoothly. As Anastasia lay there afterward, resting peacefully, Rhodes felt a tinge of loneliness. His skills in demon-purging had reached a point of mastery—this barely counted as a warm-up.
But before he could go next door to tend to Euphemia, the door creaked open again.
Tricia entered, similarly dressed, her face red as she whispered, "Lord Rhodes, please help me drive out the evil."
Rhodes looked at the sleeping Anastasia and couldn't help but sigh. This was becoming quite the evening.
Outside, Madame Temani listened to the sounds of exorcism coming from the room, her heart aching for her daughters but also filled with pride.
