"Why? Why did you? Didn't you say death favours me? Then why?" She asked, accidentally pressing harder than necessary on his chest close to where he had been shot. He coughed and grunted in pain.
Nyx felt powerless right now, and it was not because of the men behind her, but because she couldn't save the life that was exchanged for hers. Her heart caved in so many times that she even lost count. It was painful and painfully familiar, too. Tears streamed down her cheeks and she felt very miserable.
Mr Anders looked at her and smiled. These might be his last moments, and he will be with his wife soon, but it was nice that he had done what he never expected himself to do. He saved the life of a child he never considered his own even though she bore his name.
"I will be fine," he said and raised a hand to caress her cheek. He wanted to reassure that everything would be alright even though he doubted that possibility. He didn't even know why he was reassuring her. Maybe it was because of the way she didn't mind their past relationship and still protected him. It could also explain why he took the bullet for her. This he told himself.
"Yes, you will be alright," Nyx started to think. She didn't know what, but she knew someone who might, and right now, he was her only hope.
Meanwhile, Bobby and Roy stood and watched. They had accidentally shot the wrong person, and he was dying. They didn't know whether to take him to a hospital or run for their lives now, but none could muster the courage to shoot again or act as they did before. They didn't mind giving a few wounds to whoever got involved, but the one they wanted dead was the now weeping woman.
Roy ran a hand through his hair in frustration while Bobby tried to think of a reason why what he did was not wrong. "At least now she understands the pain of losing someone you care about," he said, but the fear in his eyes was evident despite his attempt to hide.
Roy felt like punching him, but that wouldn't get them anywhere. Those unconscious were regaining consciousness, and they could allow themselves to be outnumbered. "We have to leave before…" his words trailed off when he heard Nyx speak. No, she called a name. A very odd name.
"Reaper," Nyx called. The desperation and urgency in her tone were undeniable, and this had them all thrown into confusion. "REAPER!" Nyx screamed the name again, and in just a second, a man could be seen standing beside her. "Save my father, please," Nyx didn't care who was around them and got to see a man appearing out of nowhere. Right now, the most important thing was saving her father.
Although he still had plenty of years to live before, after being shot, his age and time had reduced drastically, and it was still reducing. Even his heartbeat was showing down, and he was starting to lose consciousness. Nyx doubted he could still register what was happening right in front of him, although his hand was still placed on her cheek. She could feel its weakness because she held his wrist.
Without a word, Reaper bent down beside her. He placed a hand on Mr Anders' chest where he was shot. Something that looked similar to black smoke appeared on the hand placed on Mr Anders. After a few seconds, his heartbeat became stable again, and so was his life. Seeing that relief washed over Nyx and unconsciously sat on the floor, shut her eyes, and cried.
Reaper let go of Mr. Anders and faced her. He wiped off her tears, startling her as her eyes flew open. "He is alive now," he uttered in his usual calm and distant tone, and his eyes also unfeeling as always. Seeing that it was him, she dashed into his arms, grateful that he could save her father.
"Thank you," Natasha said and fought the tears that were still threatening to spill. She shouldn't shed any more tears now. He was alright and not dead. Reaper said so, so he must be.
Reaper hummed and wrapped his hands around her as well. He could feel the strong emotions coming from her, and somehow, they affected him. That was the reason he decided to keep that man alive. He could also feel Natasha's emotions in the mix, although that shouldn't be possible unless she was starting to regain her past memories.
Roy and Bobby looked like they had a phantom manifest right before their eyes. They couldn't even blink out of fear. They had come here calling Nyx a vile and accursed woman because they suspected something beyond the natural was in the play in her life but, this was way too much even for them.
Those who had just regained consciousness had no idea what was happening. All they saw was their young Miss hugging a stranger and the two men who had attacked them. Then, Mr. Anders who was unconscious on the floor right beside Nyx. Fear gripped them and they quickly made attempts to stand but heard the front door being forcefully opened.
In a matter of a few minutes, someone walked through the door and behind him were two police officers.
"Nyx," Skye called the moment he walked through the door. His footsteps froze when he saw her in another man's arms. He clenched his fists but didn't approach them. He had come here as fast as he could after the emergency call from Mr Anders to make sure that Nyx didn't come here. He also took the initiative to call the police because he suspected that something was going on. But now that he was here, he found her in another man's arms, desperately clinging on to him. It hurt more than he thought it would.
Hearing her name being called, Nyx stiffened as if being caught cheating on her husband. She didn't know what to say to him and could only hope Reaper would have a way out for her.
