It was a stormy day when I died. It had been coming down pretty hard in my little town in Florida with word of a hurricane on the way. Me being me, I ignored the warnings.
Can you blame me? I had been seeing these warnings throughout my childhood and they never actually happened... until today.
I had run out to the local grocery store to get some meds for my mom when it happened. One moment I was running across the street, there was a bright flash, then... nothing.
Just like that, I got struck by lightning.
At least it wasn't some truck that killed me, leaving my body in pieces or something. With the thought that my parents would be able to at least see my body without having nightmares, I let the darkness embrace me.
.....
.....
.....
Suddenly, I could feel my body again. Well, I felt stiff and fragile, but I guess that's what to expect after being struck by lightning.
I truly thought I was dead, seeing how bad the storm was- I wonder how they saved me...
Apparently I wouldn't have to wonder for very long as I heard voices outside of whatever I was inside of. Very strange to put a patient inside a man-sized tube but maybe it was some kind of experimental treatment.
"Vitals stable...Brain waves suggest that subject 002 is awake." I heard the woman say. "Opening stasis pod now sir."
As soon as she said that, the darkness in front of me cleared up, showing me... a lab of sorts.
A very big lab with all kinds of equipment neatly arranged in various areas. It was then I noticed that I was lying in a pod and that there were many more all over the place.
"Subject 002 is very active, and fully aware. Though 002 seems to lack any of the emotional flaws that 001 had." The woman spoke into a mike, bringing my attention to her.
She was... familiar, but I couldn't remember from where.
"Yes sir." She spoke, seemingly talking to her boss. She then turned back to me. "Hello 002, can you understand me?"
As I heard more of her voice, I quickly realized who she was. Eve Watson, a character in DC comics who was involved in the creation of Superboy.
'But that would mean...that I'm currently in DC and that I most likely DID die.'
Eve's face scrunched up a little. "Hmm, seems to be some mental confusion."
Hearing what she said, I turned my attention back to her, speaking my first words in this world.
"Whe- COUGH" At least I tried before I realized how thirsty I was.
"Oh my, has his water supply run dry?" Eve panicked before furiously muttering to herself. Something about dammed maintenance men.
I continued suffering in my pod while she pressed a few buttons on her tablet. "Hold on 002, I'll get you some water."
The glass in front of me split in two vertically then slid to either side of me, earning me my freedom from the cramped pod.
But I couldn't care less about that as Eve handed me a glass of water. "Now be careful 002, take your time."
Not listening at all, I guzzled the entire glass in what had to have been record time. "Ahh, that's nice."
"Oh! Thats surprising. Subject 002 seems to have innate knowledge of some sort." Eve spoke into her microphone.
"Where am I?" I asked her. 'I know where I am, Cadmus' underground facility, but I wanna hear what she says.
"You're home, that's all you need to know for now... we should get you a name rather than a number shouldn't we?" She was about to say 002 but came to a sudden realization.
Speaking into her microphone, she asked her boss a question. "Has a proper name been chosen for subject 002 sir?"
"Yes sir." Eve waited for an answer before turning back to me. "Would you like me to give you a name or for you to choose?"
"Uhhh, can I decide later?" I asked, my mind stirred up by my sudden rebirth.
Eve only gave me a kind smile. "Of course! For now, I'll have to call you 002, kay?"
She then turned on her heel, walking a few paces away. "Now I need to conduct a few tests with you. Try walking to me." She ordered, bringing her tablet up in front of her.
'Now that I think about it, they've been calling me subject 002. And she said something about 001 being violent. Fuck I'm slow, I'm one of their Kryptonian clones.'
I somehow only just now came to that realization, but I'll give myself a pass just this once.
"Okay, just to you right?" I asked, slowly stepping out of the stasis pod.
"Mhm, just testing your motor functions."
Cautiously, I stood up onto my bare feet and managed not to fall over despite how odd my body felt to my mind.
I heard Eve muttering something into her mic while I began walking. The first step, I nearly fell, still unfamiliar with the length of my legs.
But with every shakey step I took, the next was easier, and by the time I was in front of Eve, I felt confident walking around.
"Feels good." I cheesed, excited about the new future I had in front of me.
Eve though thought I was excited about managing to walk properly, and while not entirely she was partly right.
"Good job 002! Now we have just a few more and then I'll take you to your room."
"Follow me." She led me off to another section of the lab, but not before I took a quick glance around my pod, finding another close by. 'That must be Connor.'
I stopped walking with Eve, instead walking towards the other pod. Putting a hand to the glass.
"Who's in here Eve?"
I heard her walk up from behind me. "That is your little brother, he's just still growing." She said in a slightly nervous tone.
"Can I see?" I turned to her, putting on my best 'hopeful young boy' expression.
Eve hesitated for a moment before sighing. "All right, but then you have to follow me for the rest of the tests okay?"
I nodded, knowing that they'd test me whether I was willing or not.
Eve tapped a few buttons on her tablet, making the glass clear up like mine did. What showed underneeth was very obviously Conner or Kon-El, just a younger version of what was shown in the show.
"He'll be able to come out and meet you soon." She said, making the pod dark once again.
"Now follow along, it won't take long." She promised, starting to walk away.
I lingered for a moment, thinking about the implications of my being here and what my future would hold.
"Can't wait," I muttered, an excited smile escaping onto my face as I turned back to follow Eve.
