It didn't take long for Dr. Manhattan to return, and to Kara's surprise, he wasn't alone. With him was a beautiful young woman dressed in a revealing outfit.
Hovering in the distance, Kara crossed her arms, an unimpressed expression on her face. "If you didn't want me to stand on that strange contraption of yours, you could've just said so."
Dr. Manhattan had once again bent the laws of reality, dragging her through the quantum realm and back to Mars without a single warning. The disorientation and abruptness were starting to get under Kara's skin.
The woman accompanying Dr. Manhattan was Laurie Juspeczyk, also known as Silk Spectre II. She appeared equally bewildered and was curiously eyeing Kara.
Kara floated closer, her iconic cape billowing behind her. She wore her signature Kryptonian suit—a blue skintight top with a golden "S" crest on her chest, red cape, red skirt, and bright red boots. Despite her towering height of 1.9 meters, her small, dainty boots made her figure appear even more elegant.
Laurie's gaze lingered longer than necessary, her expression skeptical yet intrigued.
"I get the feeling you're thinking something rather inappropriate," Kara said with a playful smirk, her arms still crossed.
Laurie opened her mouth to reply but suddenly gasped, clutching her throat. She dropped to her knees, struggling.
Kara raised an eyebrow at Dr. Manhattan. "You didn't give her breathable air?"
It dawned on Dr. Manhattan then—Mars lacked an oxygen-rich atmosphere. He quickly waved his hand, constructing an intricate quantum air shield that allowed Laurie to breathe. She inhaled deeply, coughing slightly.
"I'm… on Mars?" Laurie said in astonishment, glancing around at the barren red landscape.
Kara smirked, folding her arms again. "You mean he's never taken you on a cosmic joyride? And I thought you were supposed to be special."
Dr. Manhattan seemed momentarily flustered. "I haven't."
Laurie turned her attention to Kara, her curiosity unmasked. "Who are you?"
Kara extended a hand in mock politeness but retracted it, brushing it against her cape. "I'm from another world," she said lightly. "Kidnapped by that guy over there. Call the authorities if you can." She gestured toward Dr. Manhattan with a mocking smile.
Laurie chuckled despite herself but turned to Dr. Manhattan for an explanation. He hesitated, unsure how to articulate the situation.
Finally, he sighed. "I brought her here because I wanted to understand her perspective."
Laurie's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Why?"
Dr. Manhattan was unusually candid. "Because you've been hiding things from me. For instance… you and Dan."
Laurie froze. "You know about Dan?"
"Not yet," Dr. Manhattan replied. "But you'll tell me soon enough that you've been with him."
Kara, now hovering lazily near a rock, couldn't hold back a snort. She landed gracefully, perched on the rock, and conjured imaginary popcorn with a theatrical flourish.
Laurie remained silent for a long moment, then sighed deeply. "Yes. I've been with Dan."
Kara feigned a gasp, covering her mouth dramatically. "Stay strong, Jon!" She lit her Green Lantern ring for added flair, letting it glow as though she were offering him moral support.
Dr. Manhattan ignored her antics, but his shoulders tensed. For the first time, he seemed genuinely upset. He turned his head away, almost as though sulking.
Laurie tilted her head. "Are you… angry?"
Dr. Manhattan's voice was uncharacteristically emotional. "You didn't think I'd abandoned my humanity completely, did you? Laurie, I told you—you were my only connection to Earth. The only reason I clung to being human. And now you've betrayed me. Why should I save the Earth?"
Kara tilted her head, visibly amused. So this is what an omnipotent being looks like when he sulks?
Laurie was taken aback. "Jon, you can't mean that. If you still care about me—if you love me—you'll save the Earth for my sake."
Kara's jaw dropped. "Oh, come on!" she muttered under her breath. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
If Dr. Manhattan's behavior was frustrating, Laurie's response was downright baffling. Kara couldn't fathom how anyone could leverage saving billions of lives as a personal favor.
Unable to stomach the absurdity, Kara rubbed her temples and muttered sarcastically, "Well, I guess that settles it. Humanity's salvation hinges on her ego."
Laurie continued pleading with Dr. Manhattan, seemingly oblivious to Kara's incredulity.
Suddenly, Kara's expression shifted. Her sharp Kryptonian senses detected something unusual back on Earth. She turned toward the distant blue-green planet, her gaze narrowing.
"Something's wrong," she said, her voice low and serious.
Dr. Manhattan followed her gaze, his expression unreadable. "What do you see?"
Kara's fists clenched, her cape fluttering in the thin Martian wind. "Trouble."
